Kono minikuku mo utsukushii senkai 01

Some say it's a fine line between pure genius and outright insane. I always thought Gainax lived on this line. It's virtually impossible to predict if their next piece of work is going to be divine or disastrous. So while still bearing the indelible mental scars of Mahoromatic 2's ending, I took a deep breath and plunged into konomini.

And I found it was to be very enjoyable and somewhat intriguing indeed. It could be that the magic of Mahoromatic (season 1) still lingered on, after all it's by the same production team. I detected traces of Evangelion, though mostly from the opening sequence. Possibly attributed to Takahashi Yoko's performance (who also gave us "Cruel Angel Thesis" ~Evangelion~). The way they attempted to convey some critical yet cryptic elements of the series via rapid successive flashes in the opening sequence is also reminiscent of Eva's. I'm particularly intrigued by the butterfly motif. Its assymmetrical wings seem to point to the incomplete evolution of a single organism to the next biological stratum. It could very well be presentative of Takeru and Hikari's current physiology as they seem to host 2 personalities in the same body. This evolution/extinction theme would probably the backbone of the series.

I'm trying not to get too excited over this series, having once been wounded mortally by Mahoromatic 2. But it's hard not to when Kawasumi Ayako is playing someone as kawaii as Hikari. Yes! Ep 2 is already out.
