Mai HiME 01

Excellent debut to one of the most anticipated series of a new season! I thought the music was truly exceptional. It was not intrusive as in Madlax (though in got better later in the series) and served only to accentuate the exciting bits especially the first face-off between Natsuki and Mikoto. There's also this strong Noir feel with the same use of the pseudo-Gregorian chant embedded in the music. That's a really good thing for me since I personally accept Noir's music as one of the best in the anime sphere. The battles were also wonderfully animated. Gotta love the way Mikoto wields her massive blade. The spiraling attacks complete with trailing sparks were just beautiful to behold. Natsuki's mecha and ice attacks were equally impressive, almost right out of Final Fantasy games. There's a strong Scryed vibe to the battles and I'm really hoping Sunrise can maintain this level of high-profile fighting as they did with Scryed.
The characters are also well designed. Their utterances are intuitive and congruent with circumstances and personality. This bodes really well for future character development. I really like Mai and her spiritedness. (Maybe I'm inclined to all the characters played by Nakahara Mai.) Possibly that's why her HIME powers involve the use of fire. After all she's as feisty as the flames she wields. Natsuki on the other has the disposition of an ice-queen and her ice attacks do well to complement her personality. I would like to add that Natsuki looks absolutely fabulous in her biker suit. :P *Digs out MEGAMI posters*

My-HIME is certainly staying on my to-watch list. After all, I've been looking forward to it ever since the 30s promo was released in April and it has indeed lived up to my initial expectations. It is one series that I would need the raw's fix while waiting for the subbed.
