Futakoi 13
Yes, I have put off publishing my final impressions of Futakoi for the longest time because of my disappointment with the last ep. It was particularly 'devastating' since its preceding eps were excellent. Personally, I thought the finale was a cop-out. They were obviously out of air-time and unable to resolve convincingly the many story elements (there were some very good ones in fact). Thus, instead of addressing the fundamental premise of the series (which is the love intrigue that was painstakingly built into the series by its previous good eps), the finale completely sidesteps Nozomu's choice of any of the girls and arbituarily closes with a generic harem ending where he 'gets' all the girls. Generic harem ending is wonderful in Stripey-land but not in a series where I've come to love the characters so much only to see their character growth squandered by a poor ending. Does that mean I now had to eat my words on Futakoi being the least of the anime series in 2004? Well, I still maintain that it's nowhere near the bottom, but I can certainly identify with the indignation that could have led to its nomination.
At this juncture, I must point out that while Futakoi did not quite arrive, I did enjoy my ride very much. (I really couldn't help it with moe moe characters like Kaoruko, Soujuu and Kira). Nevertheless, it's yet another classic case of promising series betrayed by poor plot resolution. (Seems to be awfully prevalent in harem/fanservice series) Hopefully Ufotable redeems Futakoi with their production.
