Canvas 2 ~ niji iro no sketch 02
I don't know about Japan but if one was found bedding his beautiful 16-yr-old cousin in my country, he would likely be disowned, castrated and whipped by parents, uncle/aunt and authorities respectively (in no particular order though).
I'm not sure what's going through Hiroki's mind. It seems cruel to me that he's not responding to Elis' advances. Very possibly he still see Elis as a child and dismisses her fierce affections for him as a sister would have for a brother (although I don't think sisters generally try to 'chu' their sleeping brothers). Well, maybe someone should remind him that his 'baby' cousin is now a hormonal reactor near meltdown and very very capable of childbearing. Even if we are to assume they have the willpower to overcome their primal physical urges, Hiroki should take early measures if he doesn't want to emotionally bankrupt Elis with his eventual rejection.
As for Elis' competition, Kiri is evidence that Canvas would likely not be a stereotypical harem series. Where most series of such genre usually feature childhood friends returning to reclaim their previous promises of love/marriage, Kiri returns as a reject from the past. We also don't often see a older girl pitted against a much younger one in love triangles (Think something to the effect of Mitsuki/Haruka vs Akane in Kiminozo... man I would LOVE to see that!) Although I must say the plot device of parents dying in car accidents is a tad over used (Nemu, Kaede, Kotori?) It appears to be the price to pay for being the school idol or siscon these days in romantic anime series.
Rooting for Elis...

I am not particularly fond of harem shows, however, to have relationship with underaged girls sounds very much offensive. What’s with Japanese’s obsession with making adolescent girls looking as if they are at least 10 years younger? It’s disturbing, really.

I wouldn’t classify Canvas 2 under harem since from what I have seen so far, there’s only 2 girls contending for the guy really.
I’m not gonna make any excuses for Japanese ‘inclinations’ but I try to be ‘positive’ and see it as their cultural disposition to esteem youthful exuberance. Yeah, I know I’m stretching it….

Well, back in the days when we were still using stone axes and there is no such thing as “law” people probably have babies at an earlier age. “Disturbing” is probably in the context of present day human “law”? We see people gutted in anime all the time yet we don’t complain, so what’s with underage sex?
No, I’m certainly not encouraging it in real life. Maybe it’s a case of “forbidden fruit taste sweetest”, like in anime we get awed by all the things that we can’t possibly see or encounter in everyday life.

Thanks for the fresh perspective, Actually from what I understand, underage sex trade is a big social problem in Japan. And having been dabbling in anime for these years, I can’t help but feel that the anime industry is fuelling the issue by heavily sexualising very young girls. You’ll be surprised how pervasive anime can be into your psyche when you have been thoroughly immensed in anime culture for a while.
It’s not just a matter of using “Gao”, “uguu” or “nii-san” in your daily speech but it can even affect your life choices. For example I have decided to raise my daughter (if I do have one) to be like Shirakawa Kotori or Kinomoto Sakura.
