Twenty H-Games turned Animes (HGtAs)

Inspired by Jason's meido power rankings, here's a very personal HGtAs list actually more to track the depth of my descent into this class of anime. I must admit that to date, I have only caught 20 HGtAs and I have not even seen defining classics such as To Heart or Pia Carrot deluxe. (Yes yes there goes my blogging permit for bishoujo/HGtAs series... haiz... :P ) Anyway for the true resident bishoujo anime blogger, pls head over to Bluemist. :)

Incidentally, this list totally omits the many many h-animes that have roots in h-games (the more natural derivative I might add) which I have poor knowledge of anyway. Check out moetry if *ahem* your inquisitive impulses on this subject matter implore you to.

Without further ado, here's an absolutely worksafe top 20 HGtA ranking.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#20 Wind~Breath of Heart (TV series) (Official Site) (ANN info) (My impressions)
It may be 20 on this list but it's actually the WORST anime I have completed in my life. The girls are not even cute (fugly seikufu) and the story is incomprehensible. Watching toenails grow is time better spent.

#19 Natsuiro no Sunadokei (OVA) (Official site) (ANN info)
Got some cute girls but the execution of the story is so poor, it bags the near bottom.

#18 Green Green TV (TV series) (ANN info)
You know a HGtA has failed when its most memorable character is an exceedingly lewd/fat boy and most memorable scene, some hot (literally) guy-guy action. Not even a generous dose of siscon could save the series.

#17 Triangle Heart ~Sweet Songs Forever (OAV) (Official site) (ANN info)
A rather forgettable series with some cute girls. The slight siscon saved the day.

#16 Ramuiro Senkitan (TV series) (Official site) (ANN info) (My impressions)
The story is laughable and the scenario, ridiculous. The very kawaii characters (Momen, Rinzu and Kuki!) are its only saving grace. The numerous implied sex-scenes didn't do much for me though.

#15 Comic Party (TV series) (Official site) (ANN info)
Yes, I know CP doesn't deserve to be here after all it boasts of a decent story and some very good character development. Unfortunately, I couldn't identify with the theme. :P (An anime-blogging rendition would probably be better received by me... in fact sign me up for the live-action audition!)

#14 Hani Hani ~Operation Sanctuary (TV series) (Official site) (ANN info) (My impressions)
I'm one of the near extinct minority which actually watched and liked the series. Yes. the story is weak. But!! The characters... ahhh the bishoujos in this series are really something. Fujieda Honami is one of my top 3 anime childhood-frens and Matsuri, top 3 anime cousins. I demand a remake!

#13 Yami to boushi to hon no tabibito (TV series) (Official site) (ANN info)
The main storythread is somewhat bewildering but it hosts some very good standalone tales. I believe someone well versed in Japanese folklore would be able to appreciate the series much better. Moreover, Carnelian designs can’t go wrong.

#12 Da Capo Second Season (TV series) (Official site) (ANN info) (My impressions)
DCSS could have gone sooo much further. With powered up Nemu and Kotori plus a host of new kawaii characters (Alice and Tamaki!), this should have been a winner. But unfortunately the plot failed the superb character designs. Very very regrettable.

#11 Fate/Stay Night (TV series) (Official site) (ANN info) (My impressions)
Only 9 eps but the combined charms of Rin/Sakura/Saber helped clichéd a spot at #11. Hopefully they would not squander the excellent character designs. If all goes well, FSN should be in the top 10 when completed.

#10 Lamune (TV series) (Official site) (ANN info)
No dramatic elements such as magical sakura trees or devastating accidents (as of ep 8 at least). Its strength lies in the simple yet sweetly authentic relationship between the protagonists. The girls have a genuine charm that transcends anime boundaries and makes you want to believe such kawaii girls exist in RL.

#09 Refrain Blue (OVA) (ANN info) (My impressions)
Undoubtedly the best OVA I have seen in this genre. A coherent story starring a cute pink haired girl with a nice touch of mystery. Very underrated.

#08 Canvas 2~Niji iro no Sketch (TV series) (Official site) (ANN info) (My impressions)
Very Da Capo (season 1) less the drama. Hosts a consistent character development and very charming supporting cast. Although it only pains me to see the really cute siscon character playing the underdog in love here.

#07 Popotan (TV series) (ANN info) (My impressions)
Apart from the very unnecessary nudity, Popotan has a very focused story despite glaring plot loopholes. It's built upon a very interesting premise that helped faciliate some really touching moments.

#06 Shingetsutan Tsukihime (TV series) (Official site) (ANN info) (My impressions)
To be honest, I’m generally disappointed with Tsukihime knowing that it could have been soo much more if they concluded with the game’s Kohaku arc using 24 eps. Nevertheless, for a HGtA, it’s pretty accomplished with ample plot and a truckload of bishoujos. Hisui/Kohaku ftw!

#05 Kanon (TV series) (Official site) (ANN info) (My impressions)
Uguu! Why can’t Kyoto Animation remake Kanon with AIR’s production values? A very touching tale with some nice twists. I cried more than once.

#04 AIR (TV series) (Official site) (ANN info) (My impressions)
Has the most charming characters in all of the HGtAs. In just merely 1 ep, I was so captivated by all of the AIR girls, (Misuzu, Minagi and Kano.) The production values are fantastic. A re-worked conclusion in place of its lackluster one may see AIR heading this list. A remake onegai shimasu!

#03 Kimi ga nozomu eien (TV series) (Official site) (ANN info) (My impressions)

Has the most dramatic story of all the HGtAs. While the character designs are not as noteworthy (I only like Akane and Ayu), the plot and excellent storytelling more than makes up for it. Pass your un-initiated friends 2 eps to preview for best effects.

#02 SHUFFLE! (TV series) (Official site) (ANN info) (My impressions)
Has the most integrated storyline I’m seen in HGtAs. Its versatility in delivering the hilarious, the touching and the dramatic makes it a very well rounded series to catch. I demand a Primula OVA!

#01 D.C. Da Capo (TV series) (ANN info) (My impressions)

Has the cutest imouto in all of anime-dom, Asakura Nemu. (Yes, I'm biased.) The side eps are plain weird and the first half of the series meanders a lot. But it did have a very good 2nd half that culminated to a strong finish. Special mention of the superb music and cinematography to give us so many emotional/magical scenes.

  1. Is the focus here on the anime or the eroge?

  2. oops didn’t put it across clearly… the anime itself. :) I have played none of the games to comment on them fairly.

  3. Unfortunately because of my busy schedule I have not taken a glimpse of the newer HGtAs out there, so out goes my blogging permit too. Hopefully I can catch up again in a few months.

    Agreeable list BTW!

  4. I’n going to quote Kanisawa of Tsuyokisu fame…

  5. > I demand a Primula OVA!

Be careful what you demand for, my brother. Remember when you demanded for a Miko Mashiro OVA when Mai HiME was airing? Look at what you got! :P

  6. bluemist: looking forward to hear your thots on the newer HGtAs… :) it’s really enriching to hear from someone who have actually played the game to make comparisons with the anime. Keep those insights flowing. :)

T_I: OMG! SF? Siscon-land? An island of kawaii imoutos going “Nii-san”? I’m packing my bags… :)

Zyl: Ouch! that hurts… :P You’re probly right. After all I wasn’t too impressed by Akane’s OVA from Kiminozo either… but man! did you see how sweet Primula’s gotten in the final ep of SHUFFLE? I really melted when she was rubbing against Rin and going “onii-chan” during the rooftop lunch. :)

  7. For a while there I thougt I was reading the “Worst HGtA list”! Green Green’s bear-rape fetish stikes a low point in anime, period. Maybe you should change the title to “A list of 20 HGtA” or trim off the lower half?

  8. haha yes Ender, you are absolutely right. Took out the ‘top’. Not so misleading now :)

  9. So what will the next list deal with? If it is music, I can give you a full dissertation.

  10. haha it’ll be great to hear your thoughts/insights on anime music! My personal favourites for OSTs include Da Capo, X TV, Noir and Mai HiME. :) Maybe I will write about it sometime. Thanks for the thot. :)

  12. T_I: haha! I didn’t know an anime bible exist. :)

  13. Kanon remake with AIR productions? Consider it done! http://www.bs-i.co.jp/anime/kanon/

  14. haha thanks verves2! :) I just found out too! I should start making more wish lists :P
