Hamai bastard You take Temna attention

This is not a foray into the politics of fansub groups. This is not a criticism or endorsement, overt or implied, of any fansub group. This is just a passing observation that, sometimes, fansubs can make an anime even more enjoyable than watching it raw or with official subs. Wannabe is my preferred fansub group for School Rumble but as I tend to be a "firsto releasu getto!" sort of person, I dipped my toes into Your Dad's sub of Sukuran Niggaki Ep 3 - which is where the above screencap and post title comes from.

Hanai and Tenma's names are spelt wrongly. It's grammatically incorrect. But the meaning is clear and it's still funny as hell. Heck, it's even funnier because the playful (and deliberate) wrongness of the sub brings out the simean nature of Harima's jealous reaction. There are other willful "mistakes" like rendering Karasuma's name as "Kamasutra" or rendering "seifuku" as "lingerie" (instead of "school uniform") just before the ED when Eri confronts Nakamura - all hilarous to boot.

Of course, there are some trivial gripes about the video and audio quality, two instances when the translators admitted that they had no idea what was being said, the unnecessary LOL during the scene when Harima shoots Mikoto in front of Hanai, the confusion of editor and translator over "Meeeko-chan" but I wasn't bothered at all. After all, it's free and it's fast. A big thanks to all fansubbers out there!

My main point is that fansubbers have more creative license and leeway than official subs. Some groups exploit this more than others but those who do it well can really produce some gems. [Another sterling example that I've noted before was Hitoribochi's "You dares to call my Sergeant "stupid frog"? That's unforgivable, bitch!" in Keroro Ep 2.]

About the episode proper, this was my favourite scene with Harima sabo'ing Hanai by reminding everyone about his outburst of "Miko-chaaaan!!!" It just reminded me of Batou's "Motoko!!!" in GITS:SAC and how Ishikawa teased him about it after that (I'm sure the Major knows but pretends not to out of consideration for Batou). I don't see Hanai and Mikochin to be a possible couple at all though. The former's unrequited love for Yakumo is one of the series' humour staples while the latter is very clear about their respective boundaries.

    From my tinted vision, I’ve always thought Hanai and Miko to be made for each other. :)

    Apparently Singaporeans I’ve met overseas can immediately tell that I’m a fellow countryman just by the way I say “Hello”. (;^_^)

    IMHO Hanai goes for maiden types (hence Yakumo) and Mikoto likes smart guys she can akogare (hence the senpai). They might be suitable for each other if you look at their personalities but not really so when you look at their preferences.

    “Sabo’ing” LOL.

    Ok the scene where Hanai and Mikoto desperately defend themselves was just so funny and cute. It reminded me of those innocent school kids who get teased for talking to a member of the opposite sex. Like, Guy A talks to Girl B and the whole class goes, “EWWWW Guy A loves GIrl B!! Kiss Kiss!!” or whatever.

    Anyway yourdad subs was reaaaallly bad but it was funny in a way. Probably more for people who do understand the language.

    The Your Dad subgroup stated that they did it because “some people are sooo sloooow” (in the ED) so I see them as providing a speed sub service – the emphasis is on speedy release rather than perfect persentation thus the numerous typos.

    They are not a spoof / joke sub as their translation is fairly ok and gets the job done – they just happen to put in a large number of in-jokes along the way. What I’m trying to highlight is that some of these in-jokes are rather entertaining (over and above the anime itself) and would never have been done in official subs.

    I don’t understand. Are these subs supposed to be “legitimate” or are they sorta like joke subs? I always thought subbers should have proficiency in both languages, let alone one…

    Mikoto and Hanai are not suitable for each other at all. They are more like brothers who just recently discovered that one of them is female.

    I really cannot tell who Mikoto should be with. Asou probably, but Asou seems better with Sara.

    If we follow the standard cliche, Hanai will get together with class vice-president or the secretary( glasses ) and Mikoto will end up with Asou ( Basketball ). Those pairings would be to mutual benefit to everyone involved, provided that Hanai realize the problems Yakumo has with him.

    The character Sara depicts how little most Japanese know about Roman Catholic Church. She is too young to be accepted into today’s monastery, and if she were, she would likely be sent to one of those Private Catholic schools for Girls in England, the country where she is from.
