Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu 04
Thanks to Haruhi's intriguing premise, I couldn't help but totally spoil myself with the ongoing translations of its novel-source. For someone who's adverse to premature plot revelations, I was afraid this would diminish my enjoyment of the anime avatar. But ep 4 once again reminded me how it is the divinely inspired KyoAni's very blessed interpretation of the novel that is the true source of the series' awesomeness. They are somehow able to masterfully amplify the good in the novel with precise touches of comic genius, making Haruhi a sum greater than its parts and her roots
Possible spoilers
There's so much going for this ep. First the kawaii. I am so going to join SOS dan for Mikuru chan! Then I can drink her ocha daily and nibble on her ears bask in the sweet aura of her cosplays... nurse, meido, cheerleader, bunny, waitress... ah! Heaven is a place in Haruhi's Matrix! My only concern is her crippling "i'm-so-vulnerable" puppy-eyed Mikuru beam that absolutely reduces me to a worthless heap (though abundantly compensated with a surging impulse to protect her). Oh yes, add a pony-tail to double the stun effect. A few Mikuru "oh-tsukete-beam" from her and I'll be an invalid very soon. Plus that has also got to be the cutest bat swing in all of human history. Kyon's imouto is a huge bonus too, upping the kawaii index considerably.
Next, the irony. I'm not quite sure how the future folks operate but sending Mikuru for this very important mission (no matter how cute she is) has got be proof for the sure devolution of common sense. First off, she has virtually zero athletic ability. For the fate of Earth of be hanging in the balance, I would expect female Terminator-types if not Madlax to come. 2ndly, she's actually one of the main triggers of Haruhi's Apocalyse. I wouldn't be surprised if the world gets destroyed cos Haruhi stumbles on Kyon fapping to Mikuru's meido pics Kyon finds Mikuru too cute. Then there's also the irony of our 'evil' alien saving the world from seemingly her own creator. Yuki was the only reason they won the match, hence keeping the enclosed-whatchamacallit-space contained. Humans owe aliens big time this round. Beer on the humans at the next galatic gathering.
In all a very excellent ep chronicling another typical day of SOS dan saving the world by placating/babying the single most powerful being in their universe; their very own club president. Personally, the odds are not too good even if we are pitting an entire universe (future populace included) against a lone omnipotent entity who's jealously in love. 10 bucks Kyon's universe bites the dust. Man, can't wait for that end-of-the-world ep.

Hmm… with the relevation that Ep00 is a subtle summary of the entire storyline, I got to thinking.
The following are all speculations. As such, it is likely that most( if not all) of it will be different from the truth. Should I get it right though, please do not tell me.
Part of the fun in speculating is waiting for the answer and seeing whether you got it right.
..) Yuki and Mikuru are practically no-brainers at this point. With Yuki’s confession to Kyon and Mikuru’s sledgehammer style hints, we know that they are an alien and a time-traveller respectively. Yuki also seems to be able to cast spells, which parellels her role as a witch in Ep00.
However, there seems to be a third side to Yuki. With reference to her revelation to Kyon and the OP of the series( the part with Yuki’s name in the command lines), I somehow get the feeling that Yuki is a… robot; or at least some sort of artificial lifeform. It would fit her current personality too.
I also still do not know the actual relation between Yuki and Mikuru. Mikuru seems to know Yuki from somewhere, but where, when and how? I am hoping to know more about this part in the next episode.
That mystery girl in the Kyon flashback during the baseball game? The one where Yuki was chanting incantations? It would be natural to think that it is Haruhi, but I think not. I may be overlooking the forest for the trees, but I suspect it is actually Mikuru. I base this deduction on the scene from Ep00 where Mikuru beamed Kyon and Yuki attacked her.
..) Itsuki is still mostly an enigma to me. I finally understood the ‘we’ he was talking about in Ep00. He was talking about his organisation. At this point, Itsuki is a Man in Black. What about his ESP powers? Well, as conveniently narrated in Ep00, Itsuki does not know about them until later, when( according to Ep00), he has to protect Mikuru from Yuki.
Actually, this is starting not to make sense. Why would Yuki be interested in Itsuki in the first place? Is it not Haruhi who creates these closed spaces? Is it not Kyon who seems to restrain Haruhi?
Hmm… starting to hit a speculation stumbling block here. One theory that immediately comes to mind is that Itsuki is acting out Kyon’s role in Ep00; or maybe one should not take everything from Ep00 too literally.
..) Kyon. The million dollar question for me is, does Kyon have any powers? I had pondered whether he was telepathic, but after some consideration, I decided to go with the theory that Kyon is some sort of dimensional slider.
Itsuki probed Kyon about entering another world and how did Kyon manage to get back. The easy way out would be that Yuki transported all of them back, but there was one little scene in Ep00 that caught my attention.
During the scene where Itsuki was almost kissing Mikuru, Kyon the narrator was getting flustered and muttering some threat that someone who was not supposed to be there would appear there. I find this interesting, as crossing from the audiences’ realm into the film’s realm is a sort of dimensional sliding. Hands up for all those who ever wish they could reach into their monitors and throttle Character X.

Some scenes I enjoyed in Ep04.
..) The ear-nibbling scene at 03:57
..) Yuki’s stealth skills at 04:34
..) Kyon’s comment that there would be a riot if Mikuru got hit at 10:45
..) Haruhi’s eyebrow twitch at 12:15
..) Haruhi’s ‘jealousy’ at 13:23
..) Yuki’s various chanting throughout the episode. It is such a relief when I finally see people chanting a spell fast, as opposed to “Pipi papa, kekekoro num bin falalala happy happy gogo spagetti etc…”
..) Yuki’s pitch at 20:17 Hurray for nonchalance.

Cheers.

So… Mikuru’s bat swing or Kaede’s umbrella – which one did you like more?

Skane: heh no worries, don’t really know enough to spoil it for you actually. A this point, i’m just most curious of Haruhi’s fascination with Kyon. I believe if we get that figured out, Mikuru/Yuki/Itsuki’s respective niches in this universe would naturally be revealed. What I do know is that flashblack of Yuki chanting spells. It’s gonna be a high point in the series and I’m not about to spoil it for you.
Nevertheless from what little I can see, KyoAni’s paper-to-anime conversion looks exciting/outstanding as usual.
As for reaching into your monitor… Am i the only one getting Sadako vibes here?
Zyl: LOL trust my bro to rem such things… both are equally cutesy, it’s hard to decide really… but if cruelly forced to make a choice under interrogative torture, Mikuru gets my vote for sheer futile effort.

Haruhi just keeps getting better…Kyoto Animation just amazes me. It’s a pity it’ll only be 14 eps, but there seems to be more than enough material for a second season if it does well (and as much buzz as it’s getting, I’ve got to think it’s going to sell).

Oooo, a 2nd season is a lovely idea.
I only hope that if that is so, they would structure season 1 such that there is room for a sequel. Currently there’s 3 eps on book 1, 1 on book 3 (I’m not sure ep 1 of Haruhi comes from which book though
). I just hope they would confine themselves to the first 4 books’ material if season 2 is on the horizon.

heh crimson, this is probably matrix all over again.. with seifuku bishoujos instead of trench-coat beauties.
I just hope it ends strongly.
