Eureka 7 – Interim Impressions

There is no greater pleasure in anime fandom than marathoning a good and long (>26eps) series. The best anime experiences in my memory consist of sleepless nights and 'truant' days devouring crack series like Naruto (first 80 eps), Hikaru no Go and Cardcaptor Sakura. And thanks to Eureka7, I'm now re-living those euphoric days of anime bliss.
In previous discussions of 'favourite studios', I noted that Eureka7 would inadvertently be higlighted to prop BONES' greatness. I had then known very little about the series (although I noticed 'annoying brats' seems to bear close association). Curious, I delved into the first ep of Eureka 7 and fell. in. love. (Shh... don't let fiancee-san know k? My last fling before marriage, I promise.
) Eureka reminded me of my first love. Mysterious, deeply attractive yet oblivious of the power she wields over the love-struck around her. I usually like girly girls (long haired, gentle or dere dere girls) and was really surprised to fall so hard for Eureka. But while she provided the initial hook, the universe of Eureka7 pulled me right in on the next few eps with a vibrant cast, an engaging premise and fantastic animation.
I deemed Eureka7 to be the distilled goodness of Evangelion and LastEXILE gel-ed by the genius that is Fullmetal Alchemist. (That enigmatic aura about Evangelion, the grandness of LastEXILE and the endearing characters of FMA.) However, that doesn't make it a frankenstein of cliched anime appendages. Despite taking on characteristics of some anime greats, it's an anime great in its own right by virtue of its unique blend of classical themes with an inspired, modern adaptation. In fact, I even see signature Gundam and Sokyuu no Fafner elements (pink explosions and black annihilation spheres.)
I'm currently at ep 31 and while Eureka's charms have faded a little (she's regressed to being a typical shoujo who's just discovered love), Eureka7 continues to grip me as the epic mystery of Coralians, amita drives and missing sisters begin to unravel. I'm just hoping Eureka grows her hair back soon. I miss her hairclip.

Man, it’s at times like these that I feel very alienated from the mainstream. I tried, just tried liking ‘Eureka 7′, but I cannot. Just a personal quirk I guess.

Ah must be the annoying brats. Heh.

its normal, people are appealed by different things. Like i have 1 friend who just cant stand bleach while the 99 others of us gave 2 thumbs up for bleach.
The mecha art looks pretty neat. I dont recall seeing much cool mecha action recently. Maybe i could consider getting this.

Give it 3 eps crimson.
If you don’t like it by then, you probably wouldn’t.

Heh. I’m another fan of Eureka 7. I normally don’t like mecha series, but this feels different. Heh. Renton emotions makes me like it too.
I think after around ep 30+, it wasn’t as good, but the story Coralians was still intruiging enough.
Luckily they made eureka pretty again in ep 40 sth. =X

Eureka 7 is one of my favorite series, actually my second favorite. There are so many reasons to like it. There are so many reasons to like Eureka herself (she was my favorite character for most of the series). I do prefer Anemone now though, to me she’s far more interesting and cute (and very very strange). But, this was one of the few series where I didn’t hate any of the characters (Dewey doesn’t count as a main character, right? I never found him very likable).

Tedfox: I like how Renton’s inner monologues helped us chart his growth. I had rather disliked him from the start since he was one of those hot-headed thoughtless brats which seem to plague so much of shounen anime nowadays. But he has matured so much in 30 eps.
And thanks for the tip-off! I’m sooo looking forward to ep 40
Tess: Ah Anemone’s fascinating.
But I’m getting the she’s-going-to-die vibes.
Since I haven’t finished the series, I can’t say if Dewey’s big enough to be called a main. But personally, I don’t dislike him (yet
). I guess it all depends on his motivations for bringing on this global cataclysm. I found myself despising Holland for many eps though.
But he’s better now after accepting Eureka’s choice.

I watch the first 4 or 5 eps. It was certainly different but i just couldn’t get in the whole Giant Robots sky surfing.

Right now I clasify my anime as “Before Eureka” and “After Eureka”
This series is so damn good.

Xellos-_^: Actually I’m still trying to get used to this trapar concept myself. After all they have shown that it’s possible to ‘ref’ w/o a board. I guess they are trying to up the ‘cool’ index here.
ex: haha! BE/AE as opposed to BC/AD?
Wow, Eureka7 sure did change your anime landscape. It might just change mine too after I complete the series.

Yeah, Eureka was a great breath of fresh air (or trappar) for the typical Mecha genre. I just hope the kind folks subbing it can wrap up the series. I, as well as so many E7 fans, are dying to reach the conclusion without just muddling through the unsubbed and spoiling the great sub work that has been done up to this point. E7 is probably one of my top 10 series that I have ever watched because of the growth the char go through. I assume the show puts some people off because it requires you to invest your emotions in the char – instead of just offering up some funny/satirical/sci-fi/shojo/etc… plot with generic char that anyone can watch and enjoy. E7 is not light entertainment, it examines so many topics that go beyond the ‘growing up’ themes found in many coming of age shows. From its eco-friendly tones (hinting that humans left Earth after they destroyed it, and seemingly are repeating the past), to the value of life – human & non-human, to adult relationships that are not satirized, to real world themes (politicians using the media to manipulate the populace)… well I could go on and on. Even though some series examine some of the things I listed, E7 uses plot devices to get its message accross, kind of like how Star Trek did with it’s storytelling. The stories are compelling because of the char as well as for the undertones that support the plot. Hope this helps a few folks to give E7 a second chance, or a first one!

Thanks Jesterman for giving us such a beautiful summary of the series. Actually I am currently at ep 47. While it’s still good, the pace has slowed down considerably and I’m rather concerned at having to close this epic tale spanning 50 eps in just 3. Hoping its end wouidn’t disappoint.

interesting, i love settings about ecosystems or a earth destroyed

Come to think of it, it has somewhat an epic feel of FF7.
