A Tale of Two Kisses

Pain induces fight or flight instincts in many of us. Since emotional/mental pain is less tangible and somewhat harder to retaliate against, we often 'flee' when faced with this ethereal foe. So when Yuichii ran to Ayu's lips for solace in Kanon 19, I can only subscribe to my good brother's theory, "Stuff happens". After all, it IS only human, like how Aka lost her virginity and house on the same night in REC. I mean, what better way to ease pain than to overlay it with pleasure? But deep down, I was disappointed. The Ayu/Yuichii kiss was a WTF moment for me. I actually stood up and went "Nooooooooo!!!!" like Anakin Skywalker did as Darth Vader in Episode 3.
I reiterate. I understand the impetus behind the smooch, but I don't agree with it. It cheapens their first kiss. There's also the issue of chemistry. Like many others, I found the Yuichii-Ayu coupling having less chemistry than the Mai/Shiori-Yuiichi. Ayu felt tooooo much like a VERY GOOD childhood friend. A pal whom one smacks around, tease about the boy she likes and invite to be the bridemaid for your wife. Yes, that kind of bosom buddy. Now think of your best opposite-sex pal (discounting your partner) and imagine kissing him/her? argghh, I think I better not, damn me and my good taste in female friends! Would it be as gross as kissing your sister? Maybe not but close? Sure, Ayu/Yuichii have a wonderful friendship but not romantically inclined enough for me to root for that kiss.
In contrast, the moments just before Takaki and Akari's kiss in Byousoku 5cm, I just jumping up and down my seat, ready to maki maki Takaki if he didn't make the move. It was such a perfect moment for a kiss.
The right mood.
The right girl.
The right strength of affections.
It might have only been 20 mins of learning about Takaki-Akari's relationship but their deep longing had me yearning for that kiss too. Truly, their love deserves no less.
From the preview of the next installment of Byousoku 5cm, there appears to be a new girl. But I'd be firmly rooting for Akari. As for Kanon, I'm behind Nayuki though the probability of her snagging Yuichii is as high as Nunnaly surviving Code Geass. I think I have a cleaner shot at jackpot.

my thoughts exactly. That Ayu kiss really came out of nowhere for me. No chemistry felt beforehand in the 18 eps we had up to that point. Even if it’s not Nayuki, Mai or Shiori would have been a better match IMO. I actually think maybe even Toei handled the Ayu chemistry better…
awesome Reuters link btw

…you simply can’t jump instantly from a old friend/good natured ribbing type relationship to a love love relation without it ringing completely false…Kanon has done solid work so far and it’s surprising that they made this stumble…
…at this point I don’t really care if Ayu’s going to win…she’s not my favorite and never will be…
…my main concern now is only that the story conclude in a convincing, well written way…
February 18th, 2007 - 18:23
I think this is something Kanon fans are never going to agree on; I didn’t feel the kiss was abrupt at all, and I saw the previous 18 episodes of flashbacks leading up to it (which is essentially how Ayu and Yuuichi’s relationship is built up in the game), and I really don’t understand the group of fans who insist that it was out of place. I’m not even really an Ayu fan – Shiori’s was my favourite story, and the one in which I thought the romance worked the best by far.
February 18th, 2007 - 18:30
Good post, although I didn’t quite scream at the screen, for me it was more a puzzled ‘WTF, did I just skip watching three episodes worth of build-up and not realize it?’ kind of reaction. It’s kind of staggering how even with twice as many episodes to work with as the Toei version, Kyoani’s Kanon can’t seem to get the Yuichi-Ayu chemistry right. He teases her like she’s his little sister, but there just isn’t that ‘spark’ there that you get with really good couples, like Jinto and Lafiel in Crest of the Stars, or Ken and Nanami in Lamune. The story in Kanon I always thought was better than others in the bishoujo game-to-anime genre, but on the other hand I never liked Kanon’s characters all that much–to me, Ayu just seems too much like a little kid (although I know, there are spoilerific reasons for this) to be the object of Yuichi’s affections, and the rest of the cast isn’t much better. I honestly can’t picture him going out with any of the girls based on their interactions with him so far. Maybe that’s Key’s fault for making the characters the way they are, and Kyoani was just dealt bad cards–not having played the Kanon game I can only guess.
February 18th, 2007 - 19:31
Hey I don’t mind the kiss, it was wtfish and sudden but I still liked it lol. The scene was really well done and stuff but scine I’m a die hard Kyoani and Kanon fan I may be a bit biased. Reall though I’d like a Mai ending the most haha I mean Nayuki is his COUSIN, if Ayu x Yuuichi is too much childhood frendish atleast it’s not incest. Nayuki might be the best looking one but a Nayuki ending just won’t work

Happy New Year! ^^
and Yeah, I was also disturbed by the kiss of Ayu and Yuuichi. Maybe after Ayu’s story is done..but I think it was way to early. Boyusoku 5cm was amazing…and I hope the DVD comes out soon so I can watch the whole movie. T__T

The way I see it, there’s another 6 episodes. I have my doubts about whether or not Ayu’s arc will actually run all the way to the end, so who knows, there might be a surprise ending. Then again, there might not, depending on how deeply they want to flesh out Ayu’s past.
February 19th, 2007 - 02:28
@Icteridae
Ayu’s arc in the game contains a necessary pause between its climax and conclusion, wherein one assumes Nayuki’s story will be slotted. It’s the only logical way to structure the anime that doesn’t require rewriting Key’s script, since Nayuki’s story requires Yuuichi to be isolated, and the period between Ayu’s disappearance and reappearance is the only one in which that is the case. Nothing about the anime has been surprising thus far for anyone familiar with the game, and I do mean nothing. The ending certainly won’t be.

kei-clone: Heh, I’d hate to admit it too myself but Toei’s Ayu/Yuichii had more romantic vibes. I attribute it to KyoAni’s efforts in expanding Yuichii’s relationship with the rest of the Kanon cast hence diluting the Ayu liaison. I thought they should have simmered their feelings a little more before allowing it to boil over to a kiss.. say in ep 21? But I also thought they were hardpressed to advance the plot since the kiss needed to come before the ‘school’ incident…

People, people. There is a simple explanation for all of this. Yu1 is actually Humbert Humbert (v2.0) in disguise. It encompasses everything from Yu1′s desire to hump girls with maturity levels of 10 year olds (because of an old childhood trauma) to how he hid those desires so well (he’s the original master pedobear).

>>>Is Kanon 24 or 26 eps?
According to Jason Miao (or some comment on his blog), it’s 24. But then again, he probably got it from the same source…

Luke’s “NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!” in Empire is better.
February 19th, 2007 - 16:47
@Stripey
Nayuki’s story – at least, as it appears in the game – didn’t really appear in Toei at all. What we got was a total rewrite designed to tack onto Ayu’s story. The whole love triangle actually didn’t exist in Key’s game (or rather, it did, but no attention was given to it because choosing either girls’ path essentially eliminates the other from the story), and Toei chose to make it the cornerstone of Nayuki’s story because it basically added to the drama, and it allowed them to work her into the central plot more.
February 19th, 2007 - 17:37
Stripey,
I would have gone for the 2 for 1 sale in Mai and Sayuri.
February 19th, 2007 - 22:47
Ah, but he likes her doesn’t he? Anyhow, I don’t think there’s anything platonic in their friendship, so even with the ribbing and joking aside, he does feel something for her.
It does have that WTFish feel to it though… Dunno what to make of the remainder of the series.
February 20th, 2007 - 04:46
Yeah, that Yuichii kiss Ayu part was really abrupt for me. For 0.5 seconds, I wondered if I had forgotten to watch a whole previous episode or something.
Let’s see if the series address this incident later on.
February 20th, 2007 - 07:20

Yeah, the title sounds gaudy. I never ever tot of touching it until a friend gave me a thumbs up.
Be warned though, the character design is old-school.
If you read the manga, the anime has quite a revamp to the order of events especially in the introductory section to make the flow more natural.

Beowulf Lee: I really need to read Lolita…. and not just the condensed wiki article XD
deftoned: heh.. actually I like orz better. I sure would like to see Darth Vader OTL
Tim: Ah thanks again for clarifying that. Now it sure would be interesting to see how KyoAni amalgate Nayuki story to that Ayu backbone. If Nayuki/Ayu tracks are mutually exclusive, some rewriting is also in order for 2006 Kanon? Can’t wait to see how KyoAni tackles it.
Xellos-_^: I’d hit them too.. if I’m shota yuichii.
Somehow little Mai comes across as much cuter. Heck, while I’m at it, could KyoAni throw in Kyon’s imouto too? XD
greyscalefuzz: heh, yeah… I have no doubt Yuichii feels for Ayu.. although it feels a little like leftover emotions from yesteryears
Somehow all the romantic vibes I get from them came from their 10 yr old interactions. Maybe I’m just indignant for Shiori..
crimson: I don’t think they will..
But actually it’s not really too much of an issue. I’m just… just angry for Shiori. The night before she gives him her first kiss, next day he gives his away… to ANOTHER girl while mourning for Shiori….. orz
As for your yuichii reference…. that’s the ULTIMATE COMPLIMENT any aspiring harem pimp master can have. You mind if I make you my referrer for my next job? XD
abao: Hurray for another Nayuki supporter!
Tedfox: Love Kanon? XD The next scene should be yuichi disappearing into the stars instead of Ayu tiptoe-ing… oohh tiptoe-ing during a kiss is sooo moeeee. XD

Skane, just ask the KKK and Haruka fans.
They are very sore losers. I prefer Mai myself but hey If yuuichi wants to be a lolicon then so be it. Whoi am I to judge.
February 23rd, 2007 - 14:52
The Ayu-Yuuichi kiss just seemed more of an epiphany between the two, you could hear them going “oh!?” mentally. However, if I were newbie to the story I’d have to say the KYoAni presentation… well I’d have much more expected a kiss with Mai (and/or a mutual kiss with Shiori rather than her kissing him). It did seem like there was a missing half episode somewhere about the rediscovered love between Ayu and Yuuichi.
OTOH…. I suspect that Nayuki will get a much expanded treatment for the next few episodes and there is a finite chance that KyoAni may resolve the series in an unexpected way
Small… but finite.

HAREM ENDING
February 25th, 2007 - 09:57
I hold no illusions of a Mai-ending, but I do wish to see them resolve the ties between Mai and Ayu. KyoAni’s version of Yuuichi’s reason for failing to visit Mai again during their childhood kinda left a bitter taste in my mouth. :p
Natch.

>>If only your arms were made of surgeon knives and cocaine needles containing SARS and AIDS fused together.
Zzz: How about having YOU in place of her?
SERIOUSLY what the hell is with wrong with u people anyway!?? What’s with all these hate huh? WHY THE (insert curse) are u watching Kanon if u hate the character so much that u want to ill-treat her like that huh?
Dont give me that childish/incest/chemistry/wierdo all that bullcrap, that’s how KEY created the setting and if u dont like it, dont friggin watch it, nobody would be upset with that.
And ABSOLUTELY don’t even think about saying because Ayu took the pairing instead of ur favorite character all that fanboy-crap, if u do so, SHAME ON YOU, you are 100 times worse than the trolls who hates the show for no reason, YOU ARE WATCHING KANON FOR THE WORST DESPICABLE REASON/ATTITUDE POSSIBLE!!!!
Kanon is all about love sentiments of all kind, hope and miracle, and if ur watching with the idea of lust and hatred, then please do urself and all of us a favor, stop watching. Ur ONLY ruining it for EVERYONE. Fanboys, heh, yes i AM talking to u all, especially Nayu Nayu fanboys, if the pairing is the reason why u lot wanna ill treat Ayu in such a dehumanizing way, please, dont call urself a Nayu fanboy, you DONT DESERVE the title. The last thing Nayuki would do is having poor Ayu tortured like that. She’d rather die. I’m sure Ayu would do the same for Nayuki (in fact she already did), so will the rest of the girls. There is NO lust nor rivalry in Kanon, only care for each other, in case u haven’t realize that by now.
I’m a Nayu supporter, personally I do love to see a Nayu ending, but I simply cannot stand how u people hate other characters like this (most directed towards Ayu), I may not support the pairing but i simply do not see a reason to hate her, that is just not the Kanon spirit.
Finally, I’d love to say that yes I am now spitting in thy sore hating “so-called-fanboy”‘s faces, ur attitude disgusts me, it’s ppl like u whos ruining the Kanon peace and love as well as fanboyism. Feel free to bite at me, I don’t fear u pathetic haters.
Otherwise, to all others, I apologize for all the yelling and bashing, but I must speak out what i think about this whole hate thing. Enough said, have a nice day.

Knale: woah coolz
It’s great to have a fellow Nayuki fan whose passionate enough to defend her rival’s honour
I love Ayu, her story and her antics very much myself. But I would draw a line between defending Ayu and attacking those who hate her. One man’s meat, another’s poison and especially so when it comes to tastes in anime girls.
Let’s just focus on pimping the good of ALL the Kanon girls and hope that folks appreciate them in the way we do. (which you did for half of your comment and that’s great.) As for the other half… I’d say lashing out at haters is probably not in the spirit of Kanon too.
Nevertheless, great love you have there for Kanon. *hi-fives
Let’s all hope the series ends in a manner worthy of our devotion of it. I’m with vexx on this… small and finite chance…

1. Not ALL mentioned hatred for the scene, just that the scene was eye-catching enough for discussion.
2. I like all the casts, but I’m not crazy over anyone of them.
3. People have their opinions, but if u bother skimming thru, u will notice no one stabs another (maybe xcept for Stripey since pple tend to respond directly to him, lol) for their different views.
4. If u need to call other names to get your point across, what’s the diff btw u and those who have that transient hate for ayu?
5. A book once available to the public is supposed to be open to criticism. Stripey, once blogged, is open to the same possibility. Kanon is no different. You will be more help (to whatever subject u are champion-ing for) if you just share with pple your positive perception without unnecessary inserts.

@ crimson
the hate factor, i no of course, i was specificly refering those who did, actually i was most specifically refering to the comment i quoted, but the whole point of my post serves as a rant towards comments everywhere of such type and i can tell thee it’s not the first time i’ve seen it. second, i am aware im not making myself any better than them, but if that means i can voice out some senses, then sure, i am willing to be called upon lowly, hater’s hater, watever u wish to call me. notice i use the word “supporter” to address myself rather than “fan”, as i do wish to draw a line between my current hate action and the true fans. as for ur last point, unneccessary inserts, hmm, need i have to remind u that, my comments are pointed directly at what thy should call “unneccessary inserts.”
@ Stripey
thnx for understanding, and i completely agree that my action is not appropiate, so i am not worthy of calling myself a “fan” as well, but somehow i cant just sit duck and say nothing. In fact i didn’t care to make a fuss until i saw those sick comments. at that point i feel it was no longer about personal taste, there is no valid reason behind it. Upon such offense, then hell, let me bring them down with me (which is also a problematic attitude, meh).
but again, reflecting upon my own point, i’m at fault as well.
good heavens, let’s just bless Nayuki and Kanon for goodness sake.
Again, if anyone not involved find my post offensive, thou have my sincere apologies.
Have a nice day.

Just a side note, if one thinks words such as a curse i censored, “bullcrap” “pathetic” “despicable” are considered as calling “names”, then there is no room for discussion nor expression. Maybe the crap word, that I’m at fault.
Have a nice day.

*SERIOUSLY what the hell is with wrong with u people anyway!??*
The above line motivated me to respond even though it seems like a direct reply to certain segments of audiences.
*Fanboys, heh, yes i AM talking to u all*
I read the usage of “Fanboys” with shades of taunt. Maybe I’m not used to the event of a person with an angry face screaming at me, calling me a kind soul.
*why u lot wanna ill treat Ayu in such a dehumanizing way*
I actually valued this line because it brought me back to re-look at the Ayu incident, rather than just concentrating on the logical flow of events which we are probably too used to expecting (logical flow meaning, basing the world on a perfect model, which isnt quite true). It made me empathise with Ayu more since now fate (aka the producers) decided to throw her into this setting (yeah, similar idea to Stripey’s friend: things happen). If anything else, I like your passion.
Well, no hard feelings.
