Nekomimi mode! ~ Stripey nii-sama!

Now I know why our resident Loli-King flies a Hazuki banner.

What does nekomimi and vampires have in common? Probably as much as pizza and roller-bladed mechas. I have the tendency to avoid series with seemingly incongruous themes or gimmicky elements and nekomimi on a lolicious vampire is both to me. For those reasons, I shunned Tsukuyomi for the longest time. But the series is hard to ignore when there are claims of the main character being the 'embodiment of goth-loli'. This led to me investigating Tsukuyomi's OP on youtube. Once Hazuki went "onii-sama", I started to wonder which sealed well I've been living in the past 2 years for not lapping up this show.

Currently at ep 7, I'd have to admit Tsukuyomi feels a little formulaic. Offworldly shoujo with almost zero EQ meets not so ordinary guy. Love blossoms and the immature little girl stumbles her way towards adulthood. Shakugan no Shana or Zero no Tsukaima anyone? :) But there are notable differences. For one, I found Hazuki a great deal more lolita-esque than Shana or Louise. Possibly due to succubus genes, her seductive loli-innocence has made me genuinely fear Section 376 for the very first time. I really like how Hazuki puts it herself, "I can't help it, I'm at that age.." I enjoy coming-of-age shows and there are few things more charming than seeing bratty little girls grow into fine young ladies. Straddling the border of adolescence and womanhood, Hazuki's dichotomous charm of childish demeanor and budding womanly allure comes across as both authentic and endearing. MUST. RESIST. DARK. SIDE...

The other difference is Kouhei. Unlike Saito/Yuuji who are more or less contemporaries of Shana/Louise, Kouhei is a lot older and when Hazuki goes 'nii-sama', I think Koi Kaze. I can't be said to be a fan of Koi Kaze since I despise Koushiro so much that I can taste bile in my mouth just speaking his name. So, Kouhei, while a great deal more honorable, gives me mixed vibes. Lover or guardian? Nii-san or onii-chama? Can they become a convincing pair of lovers given their age difference and the even greater gap in mental maturity? Despite the differences in maturities, both Kouhei and Hazuki struggle with the same issue. I'm quite looking forward to Hazuki turning around to teach Kouhei a thing or 2 about looking beyond personal pain.

18 more eps to go. Looking forward to more of Luna.

  1. *-docks 10 points form Stripey for having wait this long to discover the Neko-Mini-Gothic-loli.

  2. The power of the Queen Loli herself is something to be feared of. :O

  3. I love Tsukuyomi–I’m in the process of re-watching it now since the R1 DVDs are coming out (finally). Don’t want to spoil anything, but I think you’ll enjoy the rest of the series, there’s just a great mix of comedy, drama, and bishoujo.

  4. How could you have missed this series? :o
Anyway, have fun watching it. I see you’re also enthralled by the whole “onii-sama, watashi no shimobe ni naru!” :)

  5. Hehehe… did my comment influenciate you? I’m sooooooo sorry!! :D

Tsukuyomi is a great show. I loved. So much lolilicious! Enjoy yourself.

Oh, and don’t forget to watch carefully your ass. ;)

  6. …eww…

…and I only say that after watching through the entire series…

    …just eww…

…not becouse of lolis or ‘oni-samma’…although that was grating…but because to me Hadzuki and Kyouhei have completely unlikeable personalitites…even at the very end of the show…

  7. >>> I think Koi Kaze. I can

  8. Tsukuyomi will woo you in with the humor and romance and then slice you to pieces… in a good way.

It is rather unique in its successful integration of humor, romance, and abject tragedy. I love it.

    I won’t rant about it because it’ll spoil it for you…. :)

One of the components that endeared me, myself, and I to it – is fairly personal: Hazuki and Kouhei’s personality and relationship remind me of my wife and I (both in size and temperament). Sometimes we seem quite noisy to other people but then there’s that moment when she dere’s …

Anyway… the characters in this story…. ah crap.. just watch the whole thing…

  9. Too late, Stripey.
Hazuki is the most adorable brat of the world. Go for it, Kouhei.

  10. “Dark Side…” I know you use it jokingly Mr. Stripey, but it can’t help but sound a little denigrating to the rest of us, at least to me, who admits their attraction. Simply being physically or mentally attracted to younger females (real or fantasy) in of itself should not be considered a bad thing (see last two comments). Note that I am not defending those who have committed the acts.

Anyways, about the show itself. I do not remember much, but I do remember this anime’s opening is strangely hypnotizing.

  11. There are plenty of “loli-ish” adult women in the world (and frankly at age “12-15ish”, Hazuki is more “lolita” rather than “pedo-fare”)… older does not mean fat and hyperengorged boobs (or even the euphemism “more mature” looking). My wife is my age (49)… she’s 4’11″ about 95lbs and routinely is mistaken for a teen, especially in twintails, baseball cap, and/or overalls. All the fun and none of the legal issues :) …. hell, she even sounds like Hazuki (especially in rant mode “bakabakabaka”).

She remembers sitting in the highschool parking lot last year waiting for our son and hearing the strains of Nekomimi mode waft across the parking lot. Another asian-american mom was waiting for her daughter and had it on the car player. … she said it was quite disorienting to realize I wasn’t the only baka on the planet who sought out this stuff :)

  12. offic topic but in case no one here realize Rightstuff is doing a 25 dvd/$1000 sale on selected ADV dvds.

  13. Yoyo! Can talk abit about what’s wrong with dreamhost, and where are you hosted now??

  14. Xellos^_-: oops, hope I still have enough gothloli points to redeem for that unlimited access to Xellos-niisama’s secret doujin stash XD

Ronin AnimeLover: Indeed. She doesn’t even have to use the jargan on me and I’m mesmerised :P

suguru: It’s looking a good mix so far :) Although the whimisical OP, catchy as it is, didn’t feel quite coherent with the themes/tone of the series. But I guess it’s hard since the series tried to be this many things :)

Flaskis: hehe Hazuki’s most tsundere lines in the series include ‘shimobe’. Although it’s wearing a little thin now that I’m at ep 14. :)

Gilberto I.S.: Yes, I blame you. Haha no actually I need to thank you. Don’t quite get your last statement… spoilerific? :)

    Zzz

  15. *Updates the link for Stripey on her blog… again.*

Stay in one place, will ya?? :p

  16. stripey, you call ne nii-sama and i will shoot you.

  17. Actually Koi Kaze manga depicts Nanoka looking like 8 year old until the 4th book, so in a sense, it is actually worse. It is the 4th and 5th book where there were noticeable improvements and developements, which makes you wonder about anime’s influence into original. I agree that Koushiro is guilty of preying on immature girl, but my pity comes from the fact that Koushiro may already have become somewhat insane when he did ‘it.’ In the anime series you might make a case that he was slowly recovering from that insanity during the last episode. In manga series, the whole journey took about one more year compared to the anime series. When they did ‘it’, Nanoka was about to enter the final year of her high school and the fact that they had one more year to talk about themselves, compared to the anime series, and that it was Nanoka who mentioned about doing ‘it’ first, makes Koushiro little less guilty. In contrast to anime series where Koushiro finds new job and Nanoka concentrates more on the school work, the manga series ends with Koushiro keeping his job, Nanoka becoming apprentice in her mother’s beauty salon, and Koushiro indicating his firm desire never to marry to their mother ( He said this about 1 – 2 month before he did ‘it’ with Nanoka ). Sorry about the long post about Koi Kaze, but this is one series which still amazes me how good anime can be even though the first half of the original manga materials was bad.

  18. Ren: Thanks for updating your link! :) Should be camping here for a looooong time.

Xellos-_^: Haha ok ok, let me not tarnish the moe of imoutos with my impersonations, Xellos onii chama.. I mean Xellos san :P

wontaek: Ah thanks for shedding light on the manga material. I think I would have been more forgiving if Nanoka was 18 instead of 15(?) when ‘it’ happened. At that age, the difference of a year is almost a light year in terms of mental/emotional maturity. :)

  19. …and Hazuki loses to Nanoha in abj’s polls…

Ah, well, I like Nanoha too.

  20. Oops, It’s abq* not abj. lol
