The reason behind my unusual anime DVD cravings

The Sharp Aquos LC-42PX5M is the reason why I'm so hungry for quality anime DVDs of late. Costing me approximately 35 figures, the LC-42PX5M is a perfect vehicle for anime consumption. I have seen the Yuki-Ryoko face-off about 25 times on this display and loving/worshipping the craft of KyoAni even more with every viewing. Of course AIR and its tremendous production values certainly help strengthen the adoration.

For the minority who still adamantly believe that anime fansub quality is comparable to its DVD counterpart, I cordially invite you to my home for a presentation on how DVD quality blows fansub out of the water. Even the DVD-rips are inferior to the real thing. (Of course one is acquired with money, the other with bandwidth...)

The observant would have noticed I'm playing directly from my laptop. That's because this purchase not only educated me about the disparity between DVD/fansub quality, it also informed me that a HDMI DVD player (with proper upscaling) is needed if I want to fully enjoy KyoAni production values. My cheap value-for-money Enzer DVD player insulted Yuki by giving her a jagged jawline... XD

Just as I had caught my wife-to-be hugging the fridge last night, I hope she doesn't find me kissing the TV screen anytime soon.
PS: These crappy pictures are brought to you by my camera phone. May replace with better ones if I have the chance.

I can’t wait till I start earning real money so I can buy stuff like this. It’ll be so awesome.
May 23rd, 2007 - 23:41
Ah.. makes me want to invest some cash into a decent plasma/lcd TV…
Sweet purchase!
May 24th, 2007 - 00:13
You already have a home theater projector setup moy…
Anyways cool TV, etc. etc. Just make sure you’re buying original DVD’s to play on it.
May 24th, 2007 - 00:45
Well, I know what you mean. I have really enjoyed my imported Kanon DVDs on our 43″ plasma (though the swedish customs charged me some ridiculously high prices on 2 out of the 5 volumes :/), and I almost shed tears when I watched the opening on it.
And my recent purchase of a Samsung 226BW 22″ widescreen really showed me that fansub quality, no matter which group that does it, is far from comparatable with the original DVD releases.
And is that some Da Capo DVD I see on the last picture? Because I’m really ashamed. Da Capo was more or less the series that made me start watching anime, and I still love it, but I don’t have the DVDs :/
Anyway, congrats on the purchase! I guess it’s a LCD monitor, which means a superb resolution. Because compared to plasma, the image quality and resolution of an LCD is far more superior. 1920 x 1080?

I’m waiting ‘Blue-ray’ anime ^^ Should be watching anime on a PS3 with a Sony KDL40W2000 1080P TV. Full HD FTW!
May 24th, 2007 - 05:19
Ksamurai: AIR is the first one, there’s a torrent out there with dirtect-copy WMVs of the whole set.
May 24th, 2007 - 05:45
Congrats on the very nice purchase! Sharp Aquos LCDs are some of the best out on the market right now, for their price. My older brother has the 52″ version…so I like finding excuses to go over to his place and use it, haha.
May 24th, 2007 - 08:23
where’d you get the wallpaper?
May 24th, 2007 - 10:12
Argh…you managed to get PC input with no image cropping problems… People who got HDTVs without PC inputs are suffering with cropped KyoAni video…and we liked it!
See here: http://anime.nickistre.net/blog_entry/anime/2007/05/06/subtitle_adjustment_results
Ok, maybe we don’t quite like it too much. Guess we’re stuck with using workarounds.
BTW, you need to run HD content on the TV – DVDs don’t cut it. Go get that blu-ray version of the AIR OP. It was redone in HD for the release. The trailers for 5cm/sec are also in 720p.
Also, go get some of the HDTV-rips for jap dorama *cough*d-addicts*cough*. Having more than 10 years’ experience with HD (in the form of Hi-Vision), they know how to use it to it’s full potential. The S’pore HD channel’s local productions had a bit of blurness, as well as lighting problems – hopefully they’ll get to the stage the jap broadcasts are at.
I also have a Sharp Aquos LCD (only 32″ of goodness though), but I feel that Sharp is pretty much at the steep end of the market (except probably for Sony) for LCDs of the same spec. They use all that jazz about “made in japan” and “environmentally friendly production” to make up for it. Should’ve gotten a Samsung…but I wasn’t the one calling the shots – my dad was lol.

Did you try KAA’s Ghost in the shell: Innocence (Blue-ray rip)on that baby?
I wonder what would you say after that about fansub quality.
P.S. LCD/plasma is not the best way to view something if you want Quality, CRT is still unbeatable in the visual department.
May 24th, 2007 - 13:32
Speaking of unscrupulous things, there was a rip of the entire AIR blu-ray box set on TT yesterday. Seeing how blu-ray players are a bit on the expensive side, perhaps you could uh… get a special preview. I’m interested in hearing how it looks.
May 24th, 2007 - 13:42
Oops, looks like someone already mentioned it, though the one I looked at isn’t in WMV format.
May 24th, 2007 - 16:42
DVD quality Da Capo…aargh…the picture you took looks so much better than the fansubs I have it’s killing me…. It’s almost enough to make me want to import the DVDs, but since I’m Japanese-impaired it’s probably smarter for me to wait and hope that eventually it gets licensed in Region 1…
May 24th, 2007 - 17:27
yes…. DVDs stomps hell out of video snaps of *broadcast* television series.
That’s a purely practical reason for buying DVDs of shows I like (outside of my vow to *buy* any fansubbed series I liked enough to keep when it was released into R1).
I have a 22″ widescreen Viewsonic VG2230wm that produces some spectacular results in DVD watching and gaming. And I’m putting some aside for a large flatscreen for the den as present for my wife (she’s the main tv/movie watcher) this summer…. but then I may want to watch more anime on it
May 24th, 2007 - 17:58
Nothing on DVD looks better than some of the non-upscale HD encodes out there. SIMOUN HD ON 1080p FTW.
By the way, most anime broadcast is at ED anyways, so having that DVD only helps if you got a matching upscaling DVD player or some equivalent setup.
May 24th, 2007 - 18:05
‘P.S. LCD/plasma is not the best way to view something if you want Quality, CRT is still unbeatable in the visual department.’
You not seen High Defination have you, because CRT cannot do HD.
‘so having that DVD only helps if you got a matching upscaling DVD player or some equivalent setup’
Something very interesting today. PS3 had just had a system update and it now does upscaling!!, on all PS/PS2/DVDs. Testing today, it seems to do it very well.

KSamurai: I remember them talking about HDTV on Tomorrow’s World years before flat panel TVs came out.
May 26th, 2007 - 03:32
I’ve been aching to plug in a computer to this 42″ LCD TV, but I lack the cabling to do so. Glad to see that it’ll probably look spectacular.
May 26th, 2007 - 05:58
Nice huge monitor ^^

Thanks all for sharing your thoughts and my joy!

Pardon me for not replying personally but topically so as to keep it short
LCD TV vs plasma vs CRT. Heh, didn’t go to deep into the differences but we opted for LCD mainly to avoid the reflective glass of plasma. As for CRT, well flat panels are so much sleeker and I havent yet to see CRT support LCD/Plasma sizes w/o going into projection technology which imho has very poor resolution.
This one’s 1366 x 768 pixels.
Blu-ray. Sweet x 15! That’s one VERY good reason to get the PS3!! I contemplated AIR blu-ray but realised it’d cost me Mai HiME and FMP TSR R3 so I shelved the thought… Beowulf’s special review suggestion is very tempting XD
Wallpaper: Can’t remember where I got it but will upload it later
Da Capo DVDs. Woot for sooo many DC fans! Keeps fingers crossed for R1 (though I believe the odds are low
) Have been rewatching DCI and boy it reminds me soo much why of all the R3s I could choose from the vast Taiwanese offering, I picked DC. Music, cinematography, voice-acting, script… simply top-notched.
Nemu. Heh, blasphemous as it sounds, I’m both a Nemu AND Kotori fanboy. XD If I were junichi, I’d choose seppuku over having to choose btw them. XD

You could at least try to get your spelling right when spouting nonsense.
