Sola power – Morimiya Aono

There are many reasons to be catching Sola; moelicious character designs, a varied yet fitting score, excellent story telling (drawing audience in with tidbits of flashbacks yet sustaining the suspense w/o showing hand) and the integrity/interdependence of the plot/characters (how all characters interact seamlessly to drive the story). However, one reason stands above all these outstanding factors to make the series such a joy to follow, Morimiya Aono.

When I first caught Kannazuki no Miko, an initial reaction was, "Why cast Kawasumi Ayako in a frivalous yuri, half-baked mecha abomination of an anime?" Only when the series ended did I realise that Chikane is the single most complex anime character of that season whose depth of character can only be brought forth by a veteran seiyuu such as Kawasumi sensei. This, I believe, is also the reason Nakahara Mai (of Higurashi "USO DA!" fame) is Morimiya Aono.

Besides superficial factors such as impeccable fashion sense (kawaii ribbons!) and tsundere sister status appealing to my moe sense, Aono is very much loved because she's a consistent character (ie actions congruent with her motivations) despite her multi-layered personality. Her cold exterior belies a scorching heart burning for Yorito and her alternating stoicism/passion makes her a pleasure to watch. Sure, I don't agree with much of Aono's actions, but I feel her pain. Aono has given up much (including her life) and I am certain that Matsuri's affections for Yorito are nowhere as fierce as Aono (though slightly misplaced). So it must have really hurt to see how Matsuri easily wins Yorito's heart with several days of homestay and a playful kiss as opposed to Aono's devoted decades. Frankly, I thought Matsuri was a tad cruel with that goodbye kiss. Such fleeting tenderness have long lingering effects on men and compels them to want the forbidden. Matsuri should have known better with her 400+ years of experience dealing with men.

Storywise, while it appears to be Matsuri gelling the different factions together, I personally see Aono in the driving seat of the plot. She makes things happen and the story blazes ahead because of her machinations/choices. I've still very keen to see how Koyori figures in Aono's future dilemmas given Koyori's special affiliation (with the entire ep 4 dedicated to their relationship). Given that it is Nakahara Mai and Shimizu Ai reprising as 'friends', would it become another Mai HiME or Strawberry Panic?

On a related note, I had wanted to express this for a while: Sola 04 was a most beautiful anime episode. Those believing it was a wasted episode should delve deeper into the coherence of the imageries used and integrity of the story flow. Prima facie, it seemed to advance little of the plot (we don't know that for sure even now) but the emotions/details invested in the ep are so rich that it'd hard not to be rooting for Aono/Koyori.

Can't wait for the Aono-powered ep 9.

  1. Nice post considering there’s a lot of Aono-haters still out there. =D

  2. Yeah… the AnimeSuki Forum is filled with people wanting to “bump-off” Aono. :p While I myself won’t claim that she is an innocent flower, I am more intrigued than disgusted by her actions.

One of the more “maddening” aspects of sola is that it is like trying to play Braille Poker while blindfolded. You know how many cards your opponent is exchanging, but you can’t see his expressions and other finer details, and so it is hard to determine what hand does he have.

I mean, at this point, we STILL do not know whether Aono is Yorito’s biological sister because the flashbacks have yet to yield how they address one another; which makes speculators like me pull at our hair.

    Hmm…

  3. Sigh. The Koyori angle is probably built so that when Yoritard finally runs off with that Matsuri-Sl@! at the end Aono is left with something. In otherwords the dreaded (at least for me) pityf@%#. Sigh

  5. random passerby: Thanks. :) The great sympathy I have for Aono has evolved into love. :P I admire the tenacity of her emotions, misguided it may be. That said, I adore Matsuri a great deal too. She has this aura of irrepressible effervescence about her that I find irresistible.

Skane: I actually thought that was excellent story telling. They reveal just enough to draw you in yet having sufficent plot movement to not frustrate the viewer. I suspect Aono and Yorito were in fact siblings previously. My burning questions include, “Was Yorito’s death related to Matsuri?, “Have Matsuri previously met Yorito?”. The animators are really crafty by using dreams as flashbacks since we can’t separate the real past from dreamy embellishments.

Zzz…: Hmmm that’s a interesting and very plausible ending. :) but given that the OP recounts Matsuri’s activities via a photo album, I suspect Matsuri will not see curtain-fall. Yet it’s hard to picture Aono and Yorito living serene lives given the ‘atrocities’ Aono has and probably will be committing. I wouldn’t be surprised if Aono critically wounds Yorito in the upcoming as he does his lame human shield again.

flaskis: oh ho ho! I never realised they were Miina and Karen too! XD I don’t blame Aono and her misplaced love. Considering she had lost Yorito previously, it’s understandable she goes to extreme lengths to ‘protect’ Yorito even though we see plainly how destructive her smothering love is. And I believe we are all going to enjoy the ride of seeing how Aono repent of her possessive love :) As for Matsuri’s kiss, well I think her promise to Aono was to leave them alone after a last date (the last supper equivalent) and the kiss would be counterproductive to the aim since it’d cause Yorito to hunger more for Matsuri in her absence. Of course my excuse for Matsuri is that she doesn’t know the extent of power she wields over men :)

  6. I am of the opinion that during the Anno and Masturi fight it will start raining and They be rolling in the mud tear each other clothes off :D

  7. Even if Matsluturi doesn’t make curtainfall doesn’t mean Yoritard’ll move on. He’s got Matsluturi on the brain in the past, in the present, and most likely in the future. Even if she dies he’ll probably not accept it and leave home on a journey to search for her. You know the oft-used anime cliche of ‘we’ll meet again’ and such garbage last seen in Kyosora.

Of course this’ll kinda conflict with my current theory that ‘Yoritard’ is actually one of Aono’s animated dolls and she has to periodically recharge him by using up a huge part of her power, hence her ‘health problems’ and his lack of memories (as well as her ability to control him). But then again if Yoritard suddenly drops dead after running away from home I’ll be tickled pink. This too could be a ending, that Yoritard dies along with his lying, cheating, thieving beau for all those fans of the tragic romance. *barf*

However all of these ideas are just speculation on my part. I know I may sound unnecessarily critical but I actually enjoy watching this show. This is just my way of showing love.

  8. Xellos-_^: LOL! yeah I read your comment on Omni and I’m sure a lot of people would like to replace Sola’ director with you XD Heh! But frankly, the best part about Aono/Matsuri’s character designs are actually their outfit. It’s be a waste to erm go mudwrestling in them. That said, I very much would like to see Aono n her sweet pink dress again :)

Zzz…: Haha! I can see you’re tsundere for the show… right in the spirit of Aono! :) To predict any ending, it’s important to put the money on one coupling and running through the list mentally, I can’t see any viable coupling for Yorito should we want even a pseudo-happy ending. I guess that’s why I like the series. As of ep 8, the end is still murky. I’m rooting for Aono X Yorito X Matsuri myself but the odds are astronomically low XD

  9. Its become a fascinating story and I won’t waste my time with any stupid “my girl’s the best” bullshit. All the characters are fascinating in their own way (particularly Aono and Matsuri)…

  10. Sorry… I should explain that part of the reason I’m sort of avoiding the AS thread on sola is because I’m enjoying the story rather than “rooting” for anyone. Aono’s motivations are no less important than Matsuri’s. What *is* character-hating about? If they weren’t there, neither would the story be as compelling.

  11. Heh, I guess it’s all part of fandom although taken to the extremes it’d diminish one’s enjoyment of the series. I believe the story and characters are symbiotic. Character love is essential for us to invest our emotions in the plot. And where there’s love, there’s often hate :P But frankly, I think folks who hate Aono are just not sympathetic enough. Aono, much like Matsuri, is a much abused victim of a cruel fate.

I wonder if it’s a coincidence that I keep finding myself on the less popular camp (Kaede, Nemu etc) :)

  12. It’s not THAT bad, Vexx. ^^; The arguments in the threads are not about the “my girl is better” mentality, but the discussion of Aono’s motives. Some of the speculation are actually pretty nifty if you can ignore the vitriolic from… *counts* two persons. ^^;

Nobody is actually rooting for anyone (as in which girl ends up being the “chosen one”) in the AS-thread. The posts in the episode threads are VERY on-topic.

    Cheers.
