Moetan – Highlighting mahou shoujo sillies

Having seen spicy pictures of 17 yr olds masquerading as 8 yr olds in various issues of MEGAMI, I figured it'd be wise to abstain from Moetan for the sake of my battered online reputation and pristine derrière. But I was glad I yielded to the Dark Side my academic thirst for anything lolicious. 3 eps into the series and Moetan has shown itself to be a charming series with a loveable cast (what lovely huge buttons / zippers!), excellent production values and many priceless moments - the funniest of which are its digs at the mahou shoujo genre.

Mahou shoujo altruism

It was refreshing to find Ink chan's initial reluctance and subsequent consent as mahou shoujo to be selfishly motivated. I'm rather tired of one-dimensional goodie-two shoes who very quickly and thoughtlessly put their lives on the line to perform heroic acts based on some talking animal's very dubious brand of justice/goodness.

Impeccable transformation

The loose stocking at the end of Ink's transformation scene was hilarious. It merely emphasized on the silliness of a perfect transformation on the mahou shoujo's first attempt.

Lolicon mascot

Arts the duck embodies the defining characteristic these animal plushies that accompany mahou shoujos - loliconism. I'm almost certain the nekkid transformation scene is the reason why mighty guardians of deep, obscure magic luuurve to contract with little girls to accomplish their sacred purposes. At least Arts' upfront about his loli-orientation.

No attacking during magical transformation scenes!

Now we know what's the best time to attack when battling a magical girl since she'd only be protected by strategically positioned ribbons... except we wouldn't since we'd be busy staring at her ankles.

Here's looking forward to more English and mahou shoujo lessons from Moetan.

  1. Where is the Code Geass bishounen post that I was so looking forward to?

  2. Uhh….sorry but no.

  3. I’ve had this on backburner… but if all the subs remain as slow for the rest of the month I may take a look. I hear if you interpret this as a total satire its actually quite funny.

  4. on the other hand if you get caught watching this, there is a greater > 50% chance you will get reported to the police.

  5. @Xellos-_^
If you live in Canada that is.

  6. Moetan is the drug of choice after watching School Days, at least for me. It’s chocked full of light hearted satire, it so adorable and kinetic. Remi-san is the queen of loli-cons, she doesn’t come off as creepy like most tanuki hyphenated loli-cons… ;)

  7. Beowulf Lee: gomen gomen.. you may not get to see it after all… my motivations for bishounens is unexpectedly much lower than bishoujos XD

Ivy: Heh, if you can overlook the self-mocking loli-overtones, it’s a rather sweet series actually :)

vexx: I’m enjoying it very much… much more than Nanatsuiro drops at least. Knowing how our tastes coincide, I think you’d find Moetan entertaining too :)

Xellos-_^: haha I guess it depends on which version you are watching… I catch the one where the ribbons are supposed to be where they are… :P

Crusader: LOL! Ah you remember my single-hypenated fetish. XD Adorable describes Moetan well. Though I don’t quite see Remi as a lolicon actually. More as one who’s motherly instincts awoken a tad too early and too much :)

  8. How can anyone take Moetan for anything else than satire? Pretty Sammy, already in 1995, was clearly made to parody the whole Magical Girl anime franchise. Even Minky Momo, both series(1983 and 1991) did make fun of the whole Mahou Shoujo idea. There has been many animes like those beetween then and now.

  9. Heh, I’m probably new to this MS satire genre to find Moetan so refreshingly funny XD
