Hayate no Gotoku – Flagging interest

I love Hinagiku. She's one of the few reasons I'm sticking with Hayate no Gotoku longer than I should (currently at ep 22). So with the recent dearth of her screentime, I found myself wondering,
Hayate no Gotoku is a harem series (one worthy lead, many fabulous ladies) and there are many ways to enjoy harem shows. HnG has chosen the lighter harem path (the Dark track would be Kiminozo, School days and some say Higurashi) to incorporate comedic confrontations, inconsequential misunderstandings and general harem fun. I'd have no problem with another Magikano/Love Hina clone (2 series which I enjoyed tremendously) except, Hayate no Gotoku's not fun anymore.
Hayate no Gotoku is what I deemed to be an inefficient series. Too much airtime squandered on random hijinks that are not utilised effectively as platforms to deepen relationships or characters (2 significant emphases of any harem series). It's worse when these hijinks fail their objective which is to entertain. (The way-over-the-top anime referencing needs to take some responsibility for this.)
That said, I'm still staying with Hayate no Gotoku, for another 2 eps at least (I heard it has 2 more cours to close at ep 52?!). The characters are too precious an emotional investment to just to walk away from. But I really would like to see some movement in character or plot development at a decent pace. Remove fillerish robot comebacks and give us more character growth especially Nagi who needs to see her relationship with Hayate for what it REALLY is before she gets terribly hurt.
And of course, more Hinagiku.

mmmmmmmm, I really think that is a edited memory/view of Hinagi
*thinks of Tamaki’s (Ouran High School male lead?) thoughts on Haruhi*
Hinagi’s *ills were remarked to be *omparable to *agi’s.

Tony Taka’s rendition of Hinagiku, from his latest C72 Doujin, actually. Pretty nice, isn’t it?

Ah Stripey, I understand your pain, trust me. The REAL strength of the show will surface once the long-ranging Hinagiku arc begins, but… that will take a bit of time. On the plus side we should soon see the episode which lays the foundation to the Hina arc… the cursed Valentine’s Day promise.
The problem of the anime is that it’s slicing and dicing too much. Whatever story progress happens is lost in tossing any story arc into the mixer and showing it whenever they please – this kills all consistency. Too bad.
Anyway, even if I wouldn’t work on it, I’d stick with the show for the Hinagiku arc alone already, especially since she’s the only girl whose relationship with Hayate takes a REAL development.

The annoying thing abou HnG now is that they’re wasting a lot of money on fillers. Somehow, they decided to go for 52 episode format for this show… so it’ll be around for a long long time.
I also agree on Mentar on the mixing stories part… it’s so annoying, though it doesn’t feel too overtly disjointed yet.
Anyways, I guess the fun will be when Hinagiku takes the spotlight. It’s really fucking stupid of the production team to speed forward her appearance, then neglect her for episodes. Asses.

i guess i’m not the only one who thinks that the HnG anime is dragging…
it seems that none of the girls are developing their relations ships with hayate… each episode is just filled with randomness you can’t even see where this is going to take us…
and even though the visual quality hasn’t taken a nosedive the storyline sure has… i wonder if they can even end it decently, although the ending is still so far away… i just hope they can at least conclude HnG nicely…

While I agree that the show’s been dragging recently, mostly as a result of the filler episodes, it’s not really because the relationships aren’t being developed.
I kind of like the School Rumble sort of “it’s a rom-com, but that’s just an excuse to provide a setup for wacky hijinks” setting, where the relationships went nowhere but the ride but pretty fun nevertheless. While it’ll certainly be interesting to see the characters’ relationships deepen, I’m also enjoying the lighthearted humor that the show has developed so far.
The filler stuff was pretty funny at first, and if they could have kept the level of the scriptwriting up for those episodes I wouldn’t really mind. My only complaint is just that the recent non-canon stuff hasn’t been nearly as entertaining as the source material.

Yeah, I’ve been a little disappointed by HnG lately too…Seto no Hanayome has been much better at making me laugh (since it’s a lot like Magikano, which I also loved), and while I like HnG’s characters too much to drop it, I’m not looking forward to it each week the way I used to. It doesn’t help that I don’t get 90% of the references HnG makes to other series and breaks the fourth wall over and over and over. Especially given how popular Hinagiku is, I’m surprised they haven’t found more ways to work her into the story–for example, for the beach episode, why didn’t she go along with everyone else? Sure, she’s afraid of heights and flying, but her sister could’ve knocked her out for the flight or something…

Considering the anime is based on the original manga which is extremely random and whacky, it’s not very surprising that the anime is the same way. In fact, the anime is following the manga rather closely as almost every episode was based on the chapters from the manga. So, expect more “random hijinks” coming XD. But it’s not like there isn’t any character and plot development… later on..lol

crimson/hemisphere: heh, I wished Hinagiku had looked like this in that recent beach episode XD
Mentar: Ah… thanks for that breath of renewed hope. If there’s going to be a promising Hinagiku arc, I’m sticking around for it
It’s comforting to know that Hinagiku x Hayate gets real development since I was afraid Nagi’s designated girl status might have quelled meaningful parallel liaisons.
Kurogane: I get the feeling once Hinagiku’s arc’s done, I may also be done with the show XD Unless, Hinagiku is set up as the main rival opposing Nagi and their fight extends to the end. I can only hope
kaz3phyrous: Indeed, I’d have to say their production values have remain consistently high. If only they had spent similar efforts on plot/character progression and injecting freshness to their humour XD
Orion/Zan: Maybe I should check out the manga, at least for the Hinagiku bits.
suguru: Haha! Yeah, I don’t get a LOT of the references too. Maybe that’s the reason we don’t enjoy it as much as we ought too. XD

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the director of Hayate no Gotoku also working on Moetan?
If it’s the same director, then no wonder both shows are quite dragging, at least for me. The guy seems to be comfortable with sticking to one-trick pony shows (excessive fanservice in the guise of parodies for Moetan, and excessive references and fourth wall breaking for Hayate no Gotoku, while both revolve around nonsensical filler plots).

Ah thanks for pointing that out.
Yeah Moetan kind of lost its fuzz after 2 eps. But something just compels me to press on, hoping it’d rediscover some of that spark in ep 1.
