Hayate no Gotoku 27-28

This should have been the Revolutionary Girl Hinagiku post but, here I am, working my way through some of the episodes with Hina-chan in the spotlight as suggested by Haesslich.

Most of the screencaps (a LOTS of them follow) should link to a larger image.

An indignant Hina is fine too. She does have a 'champion of justice' side to her too.

Bamboo blade to the rescue!

A fainting Hinagiku is kawaii too. Beats ~uguu~ for me. ;)

Danger and relief.

Being embarrassed at cheesy romantic scenes is Hina's other weakness?

We didn't see that...

Hina saves the students and the world! LOL

Miki: I have a brilliant plan...

The debut of RGH!

I'm sure Miki would be thrilled to have Hina as her butler (which also explains why Hina was wearing the RGU cosplay for the butler cafe in Ep 33-34). She's not quite tsundere about her affection for Hina but she does then to dress it up in her own self-interest. E.g. in this arc, she knows Hina wants to find a way to disrupt Kuzuha's Butler Battle plans but then says that it's in her own interest to get the prize of 100 credits.

A similar situation in the earlier half of Vol.6 of the manga, recommended by Mentar, where (as Haesslich has pointed out) she spares Hina from a situation that terrifies her but then gives the overt reason that it's because Miki herself who doesn't want to compete any further.

Fight against Nonohara.

Prepare to be defeated! [In the merged larger pic, the wall seems to have shifted!]

Batting aside the Safety Shutter attack.

Yes, Hina very good indeed. *wipes drool off chin* The multiple images was a particular nice touch.

Round two! Episode 28.

Pay for it yourself, Risa! Quite interesting how one of Hina's catchphrases seems to be for others to think for themselves or to do something for themselves. On the one hand, she wants others to stand on their own feet but she's also so reliable that it's not strange for others to want to rely on her - similarly Misao pointed out that Tsukasa could be dopey and forgetful because she had the reliable Kagami-neechan to rely on.

Hayate vs Hinagiku!

Somehow when Hina makes her speeches of righteousness, they don't come across as self-righteous or quixotic or vainglorious at all. Even when she makes poses with her shinai that would utterly cringe-inducing for other characters, it's somehow incredibly cool.

BTW LOL at the Revy reference.

Long live the Hinagiku revolution! By the power of Greyskull student democracy, she has the power!

Hina seems to quite the battle maniac. Within that is her competitive streak which is clearly present in Vol.6 of the manga. Another is her dislike of opponents who do not treat as as an equal because she is a girl.

Stunning even in defeat.

Gracious and magnanimous in victory then and defeat now. Just one teasing 'ecchi', a quick recovery, and onwards towards the main business of defeating the Superintendent.

It was Hina's tactical advice that won it for Hayate it did!

And the episode ends on a damp squib of a note that seems to characterize the disappointment with this series in general. But had lots of Hina-time over these two episodes and it was Good Times. :D

  1. It’s not the cheesy romance – it’s the yuri that gets her. She’s about as tired of that (especially with her female worshippers) as Nagi is of yaoi (thanks to the fact that Hayate’s look is very effeminate, and he’s drawn MALE attention). Between that and the height problem… well, she’s got issues, and the implied yuri thing ain’t helping. It gets worse, especially after she found out that Kuzuha-supervisor is apparently a lolicon as well.

This whole bit’s original stuff, and not out of the manga; which is probably the best improvement they’ve had so far, given that it means we get more Hina screentime. Ep 29 is pulled right out of the manga though (the Saki arranged marriage meeting), so it’s not all original… but it’s getting there. And I think I’m the one who mentioned the ‘sparing Hina further pain’ bit last Hina post, wasn’t it? ;)

As for the righteousness part… I think that’s because she’s so matter-of-fact with it. It’s not overly zealous, and it’s not ‘better than thou’, but it’s delivered bluntly and plainly, with the air of utter self-certainty that makes it clear she believes it with every fiber in her body… but it’s not like she’s the ojousama who sees her above having to be an example (sorry, Nagi, but this means you).

  2. I hadn’t realized that Shion was a girl until quite late in Ep 27. orz Hina seems more embarrassed than tired or disgusted by the yuri so perhaps there’s still hope (helped by my lack of context/background knowledge). :P

Sparing pain. Yes, my bad. The flu medication hasn’t been helping. OTL

Righteousness. I agree with you, of course, though it could also be a selection bias that Hina fans *surprise surprise* tend to perceive her actions positively. I really do wonder how fans who root for the other girls see Hinagiku. ;)

  3. Ah yes, see the link now.

I do recommend Volume 7 and maybe Volume 8 if you can get your hands on them. There’s much more Hina love there… and for that matter, she seems to become more of the ‘core’ cast than even Maria.

  4. No clue, but she’s still got fewer faults to point at, unlike say… oh, Nagi. That’s a hard one to defend, given how she’s sold Hayate off, assumed she always had his favor, and beats him down repeatedly while harassing or embarassing him, while never admitting fault.

Well, she can admit fault – but only privately, where nobody else will ever hear of it, and she tends to fall back into her old behavior patterns; like a Louise who can’t get over her embarassment. Minus the Saito seeing her as dateable and who’s very willing to be with her…

  5. Wowie, we stirred up a real fanstorm here ;)

Zyl: Now it’s time to tackle the REAL Hina in her own main arc. It kicks off with tankoubon 8, and we get to see more facets of her, good and “bad” ones. I found the whole development leading up to the _wonderful_ climax scene in tankoubon 10 very, very enthralling. Hina isn’t just the single-minded helpful fighter for justice, she has her own issues and demons to overcome. She gains some tremendous depth here, and once again the old roleplaying wisdom that the best characters don’t define themselves over their strengths, but rather over their weaknesses, proves true again.

Give us a holler when you’ve gone through them ;)

  6. Mentar: Most of that has to do with her background, which I’ve hinted at… which is why she and Hayate get along splendidly. That, and the arc in Volume 10 you mentioned… yes, that’s a nice one, especially since that’s a lovely full-page spread they got, with what happened. And of course, her discovery following that splendid large panel later on.

Incidentally, am I the only one who’s also found Hina’s henchwomen in Ep 34 splendid to look at, both the one with the glasses as well as the purple-haired one? Especially with the looks of interest ONE of them had as Hayate showed up in his catgirl outfit…

  7. Thanks, guys! I’m working my way through the raws of tank 7 and 8. Will post on them when I (and my dictionary) have worked through the relevant parts.

  8. http://websunday.net/backstage/hata.html

This week’s (12/19) backstage with Kenjiro Hata has a Hinagiku wearing a Santa hat scribble up.

“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere you go….”
