Love and hate ~ 10 controversial anime bishoujos

Like RL celebrities, many anime bishoujos, especially those tasked with leading roles, garner much love and hate. This post is inspired by Kurogane's defense entry since I thought of at least another 10 misunderstood bishoujos needing the same loving fan support. So here's 10 bishoujos with my perception of the hate leveled against them and my thoroughly biased defense (abridged).
Warning: Strong, censored language.
Housen Elise (Canvas 2)
The Hate - Blond brat and eeww, cousin!!
My Love - 16 yr old blonde bishoujo can do no wrong in my eyes. Personally, she's closer in soul to Hiroki than Kiri and boy did she mature over the series. As for cousin relations, bah! Read my tagline.
Asakura Nemu (Da Capo)
The Hate - Petty possessive w***e who unfairly ousted Kotori from Junichi's heart and double eeww! Incest??
My Love - Love dictates a degree of jealousy and possession. That explains why adultery is frowned upon, yes? Nemu's jealousy is well within prescription given her deep but taboo affections. Btw they are non-blood related so no inbreeding there.
Andou Aiko (True Tears)
The Hate - A backstabbing b***h who strung the dutiful Nobuse along only to break his heart in the cruelest way with her own failures.
My Love - I practised the lame art of Cruel KindnessTM before so I'm a lot more sympathetic to Aiko. It's better to make such mistakes while young than old when you can't afford to.
Mizusawa Mao (Kimikiss)
The Hate - Another backstabbing b***h who strung Kai along and plotting the breakup of sweet sweet Kouichi X Yuumi.
My Love - Again, I've very sympathetic to her cause. The poor girl is terribly confused and suffering from tremendous guilt. I'd cut her some slack. Plus, I haven't seen her do anything despicable to steal Kouichi.... YET.
Kagura Hinata (H2O ~ Footprints in the sand)
The Hate - Lying s**t who doesn't have the courage to stand up for her friend and to her grandpa. Not only willing to betray her friend but her body too.
My Love - Her intentions are good though she did wrong. But blame her manipulative grandpa, not her. She's only 15 and for her to stand up to familial and social pressures may be asking a little too much.
Hayase Mitsuki (Kimi ga nozomu eien)
The Hate - W***e who seduced her best friend's boyfriend only to sleep with his best friend later.
My Love - Mitsuki is messed up alright. Destiny screwed with the Kiminozo cast and I don't blame Mitsuki's moments of weakness. Takayuki's callous treatment has to be a mitigating factor.
Yatsushiro Nanaka (Myself; Yourself)
The Hate - Frankly I hated her for most of the series too. I attribute it to the slap in ep 1
My Love - The overflowing mailbox explains the extent of Nanaka's mental reliance and pining for Sana. Unhealthy but understandable. I forgive her because she's a loony.
Fuyou Kaede (SHUFFLE!)
The Hate - The psychotic b***h who not only caused Rin bodily harm but attempted emotional blackmail later on.
My Love - A desperate and unhealthy love but a deep love nonetheless. Interesting that she toppled Asa as the top girl in SHUFFLE after ep 19 though Primula still won out in the end.
Morimiya Aono (Sola)
The Hate - Obsessive bro-con. Murderess of benefactor.
My Love - Can you fault such deep, longsuffering love for her brother? I thought they were rather blissful until Matsuri arrived. And Matsuri granting her the second life was uncalled for really.
Louise Françoise Le Blanc de La Vallière (Zero no Tsukaima)
The Hate - Violent b***h who needs to be put down.
My Love - Her violence is actually an expression of her love. Seriously. I think Saito should just take it like a man.
Hoping these bishoujos get the love they deserve.

In the second-to-last sentence, was ‘taste’ meant to imply ‘savour’?

Evidently a freudian reading slip on my part, you said ‘take’. That’ll teach me to read blogs when bleary-eyed . . .
So yeah, savour.

Sorry, most of them deserve no love-
1) Elise falls under the same category as Nemu, it’s just them being total bitches is what bothers people. Saying that her level of jealousy means a lot of love is like saying stalking is another form of “deep love.” To get angry over every little thing just makes them fall into the traditional stereotype of women as jealous, catty bitches. So no, I find them both distasteful and false.
2) Aiko- hard to judge so far, she really hasn’t done anything massively bad to be faulted for. She’s just shy and didn’t know how to react when he tried to set them up. I don’t think it’s going to last the status quo for much longer though, she’s going to make a move of some sorts, I’ll judge her then.
3) Mao- eh confused teenager but way too mopey and emo. I wouldn’t judge her as harshly as some of the other people in this list, but she certainly has managed to screw up two guys by her actions, perhaps wrecking up to two relationships.
4) Hinata- she’s just a meek person with little backbone. Being brought up in an environment such as that makes it believable. Doesn’t mean I like the character but I don’t assign a lot of blame.
5) Mitsuki- I found the entire show detestable and she’s one of the worst perpetrator on the show. My rage from the show clouds my judgment so I really can’t give much details.
6) Nanaka- I agree, hard to fault someone for serious mental defects and trauma caused by a seriously messed up family life.
7) Kaede- Her character is actually believable to be honest, I found her massive guilt and ensuing mental breakdown as tragic and not something to hate. And in the end she was able to overcome it and patch things up with everyone.
Aono- Victim of unfortunate supernatural consequences, she was a bit too bland for me to have much hate. When you have a multi-decade thing with your brother and you can’t go out into the daylight you tend to get possessive.
9) Louise- Victim of bad writing by the show’s writers more than a problem with her character. The beating was ok in the first season because they had significant relationship development by the end between her and Saito. However, the second season kinda regressed the relationship and deviated from the novel materials significantly. I like to pretend most of the second season didn’t exist.

Ha well looking back I guess a lot of them do deserve love. I was so enraged by my hate for Elise, Nemu, and Mitsuki that I was delirious at first.

Saito takes his punishment like a man.
He whines a bit too much but that’s to be expected. No one goes around being beaten like a ragdoll without some whinage.
and as for controversial? Their actions speak for themselves. whether you still love them after witnessing their actions is your choice.

I’m not too sure if some of these girls should be on the list. My understanding of a controversial anime bishoujo is someone in a show with at least one other polarizing character. Nemu and Mitsuki have received plenty of hate throughout the years but that was partially formed by fanboys siding with their counterparts, Kotori and Haruka respectively.
I don’t know about Aiko. She may have shown her despicable side in episode 6. But I feel like she receives less hate in comparison to the already started Hiromi and Noe flame war.
What about Miyako from ef? She’s definitely received her fair share of hate and has the rival with a good number of fanboys (Kei). I believe she received more hate than a few of the characters on this list (more than Aiko, Nanaka and Aono, maybe?).

Interesting post, I’m not sure I agree – but since I don’t know all the characters posted, I guess I’ll go do some…. research

Housen Elis – Good reasons to dislike her in the first half of the series, but she grew up. In the end she left Hiroki behind and decided to pursue her future… why is it Elis’s fault that Hiroki decided his own future was with her, and not Kiri?
Asakura Nemu – She ousted Sakura, not Kotori, from Jyunichi’s heart. He had chosen Sakura over her when they were young, but the passage of time and Jyunichi’s siscon (or anti-siscon, considering Sakura is his blood relative) tendencies won out.
Andou Aiko – She is doomed to failure anyway so no reason to get uptight here.
Mizusawa Mao – Her behavior is not as upsetting as the fact that her character was mangled.
Kagura Hinata – Still unsympathetic but redeemable. But a dangerous threat on two fronts – will she be able to choose between Hayami and Takuma?
Hayase Mitsuki – She was bad. Takayuki was worse. They more or less deserve each other as Haruka and Akane are too good for them.
Yatsushiro Nanaka – She deserves some sympathy but Sana deserves better. He had at least options who absolutely own Nanaka.
Louise – Would have loved to see her get completely owned. Actually, a decent villainess (not entirely unlike Nanaka, by the way) and part of her charm was seeing her get upstaged by other females in the cast.

Good list…I think other than Aono in Sola (can’t forgive anyone who tries to kill Matsuri) and Kaede in Shuffle (“I live to serve Rin-kun” and the yandere thing just doesn’t do it for me) I like all of the characters you listed.
I wonder if part of the reason the women on your list get a lot of hate is that most of them are strong-willed, and people see “strong-willed woman” = “bitch” a lot of the time. There was an article I read a while back where researchers had a group of men and women watch videos of a business interview, one with a woman aggressively making a point, and one with a man doing the exact same thing. For both the men AND women in the audience (and by about the same margin), they found the man to be competent/a good hire and the woman to be bitchy/a bad hire even though they delivered the exact same message. I think it’s kind of a double standard, like the rule from high school where if a guy sleeps with a bunch of girls he’s a stud, if a girl sleeps with a bunch of guys she’s a slut.

Die in a fire Nemu. DIE DIE DIE. GRRRR

in my case agianst Elis (who is that?) it is because the surprise the writers pull out of thin air. There is something to be said about being able to surprise your audience but it is another to pull a ending out a hat.
As for Nemu, I supported her in DC season 1. Season 2 was were she lost me. Again i will admit that due more to my disagreement with writers then the actual character.

Thanks all for your thoughts! Alternate perspectives always enriches, even if it’s an expression of unadulterated hatred.
Calawain: Thanks to ZnT2 I’m not sure I can look forward to season 3 seeing how Louise and the cast was mangled. XD
koneko-chan: I didn’t see much Miyako hate though Kei was unpopular because she was kind of bossy and the anti-siscon camps didn’t want her to win. XD And yeah I think polarising would have made a better title instead of controversial.
maglor: I haven’t finished SD and didn’t know of any char hate in SR. Are you talking about the Yakumo vs Eri rivalry?
suguru: Ahh… ‘bossy’ girls like Nemu, Louise and even Kei may just prove your point!
Xellos-_^: I think Jeff Lawson got more out of a 2nd viewing of Canvas2 and his review of the series turned a great deal more positive after seeing that a lot of the end was actually embedded in the buildup. As for Nemu, everytime I talk about Nemu and Junichi, it’s DCI.When I speak of Kotori, it’s DCSS.
Crisu: here you go

@koneko-chan- i don’t think that aiko did something despicable on ep 6 ,she was just being honest a bout her true feelings and she got more hate than both hiromi and noe ..
I think that the one who has the least number of fans from your list is andou aiko from true tears mainly because of the screen time-i’ve seen so much hate for her but i liked her alot because she was realistic and made mistakes and she was there to be a loser but i felt for her even more than nabuse because she was a mess ,nabuse’s main problem was that he fell in love with a messed up girl who was not happy with herself ,her love for shin couidn’t make her ,nabuse’s love for her couidn’t make her happy because of her guilt from what she did .even though she lied a lot(the one who lied the most in the show) ,hurted and used nabuse and forced herself on shin but she was feeling empty -i think by the end she found that messing piece and nabuse saved her from her doom instead of wasting herself and losing her deginity on someone she knew she won’t be able to get …
as for (Moa,Nanka,Hinata)-they made mistakes but i don’t think that they did something to be hated for like moa from kimikiss (she was just like hiromi from true tears )i felt for her the most ,Nanka done nothing wrong -i don’t see why u put her on the list.hinata was being tortured by that evil grandpa ..
as for(Elise,Aono,Nemu)they were Obsessive but u can’t help but feel for them as well..Elis and Nemu were just effected by thier jealousy ..for Aone -she did make a mistake but like u said -she suffered a lot and was doing it for her brother’s sake even though it was selfish but still..
The one’s who got the most hate and made more mistakes r(Aiko,Mitsuki)in my opinion Mitsuki had gd reasons and is the most tragic one from ur list right after Keade ..Mitsuki -even though she made mistakes and slept with his friend -she’s a tragic person in my opinon and lets face it -she suffered more than huraka who slept during the pain and lost three years of her life but Mitsuki had to go through with it -even though she was selfish but aren’t we all ?u can’t fault her for what happened to her friend ,how was she to know when her friend will wake up ?she was just following her heart and was suffering from both unrequited love and her guilt for betraying her friend ,Aiko -even though her plans and her direct moves on shin had the potential to destroy thier friendship and she was selfish but was just like Mitsuki suffering from her guilt for both nabuse and shin and her unrequited love for shin-she was the one who sufferd the most in the nabuse, shin, aiko love triangle because she was not being true to herself and that bugged her a lot and so she lied to her friends and herself for years to a void the harsh ,cold truth that she is doomed to fail and not wanting to destroy thier friendship but then a gain she was confused and emotinaly conflicted with her feelings and was not even sure of her feelings for shin and was harming her boyfriend and herself-i think ppl hated her because unlike so many other harem girls who sometimes use guys to forget the one’s they love ,aiko was the first to use a guy to stay close to the one she liked but i don’think she’s the bad person at all-she was just too blinded and desperate for shin’s love and didn’t want to lose and was trying her best to fit in like hiromi and noe..i think that Aiko and Mitsuki were more realistic than the others and they need more understanding ..
Keade- like Calawain said -even though she made too many mistakes in the past but i found her to be very tragic -u can nelp but feel for her with her guilt and her yendare factor -her unhealthy/unrequited love for rin was just on of the most heartbrekaing thing to watch in an anime- bottling up all that suffering inside and wanting to offer her body to rin to make up for the past -her plot was the best thing that happened to shuffle -without it -shuffle wouid be nothing other than a normal ecchie/comedy anime.. one of the most tragic bishoujos -no doubt ..
they were all just in love and when we are in love ,we all act stupid , bottled up feelings ,jeolusy is the main factor for thier behavier.. i mean i understand the hate they get but they need understanding – long post ^ ^…sorry i know i’m late .

foxy12: heh, I see you’re a really forgiving person who looks beyond the actions but into the motivations. The world needs more people like yourself who give others the space/benefit of doubt to grow/mature.
Interesting that Aiko climbed up my TT list long after the series finished, even higher that Noe though still below Hiromi. Her mistake was one many of us have made and I empathise with her.
May 17th, 2009 - 10:06
Thanks ,i’m not really the type to hate a character cept for some of school day cast (that show made rage but it was sad) i did feel for the characters though ..
yeah ,even though aiko played and toyed with both guys and that some of her actions were insane and bold ,she was the REAL victim here (a victim of unhealthy love I’d day cuz shin see’s her as an older sister )and i did feel very bad for her cuz she was destroying herself on purpose and I have to disagree with those who say she’s the most normal ,going after someone you know u don’t have a chance with is a DISEASE.she was just seeking for pity/self-satisfaction type of love,I also diagree with those who say she wouid have had a chance if she confessed earlier ,Shin wouid still reject her EVEN if she was not dating Nobuse. She was made a loser from the day she fell inlove with shin but ur right her mistake is very common and that’s because she’s realistic ..she got a nice Drama CD story though ..glad true tears ended the way it did though, hiromi was the one from the start and i don’t see the point of all the Noe Vs Hiromi game.
lol,at least all the other girls on your list had a chance.Looking for more bishoujos..
