True Tears 10 – Who is Raigomaru?

A panting Hiromi is fine too

I agree with Omni. This great ep has the makings of a fine finale for True Tears. With Aiko and Noe bowing out graciously and the climatic restitution of the Shin/Hiromi relationship, I wouldn’t have minded if True Tears ended on this note despite not closing the other storythreads, even Jun’s delicious siscon tale. Stiill having 3 eps to consolidate Shin/Hiromi love and fully resolve the Jun/Noe conundrum, would be a great bonus. I just hope the writers don’t think they can pull off a Canvas2-esque ending as unlike Canvas2, thwarting the powerful Shin/Hiromi inertia would result in a forced ending like Kiminozo. Instead, efforts should be poured into curing Jun of siscon and Noe of her tearless condition.

As for Aiko, I was sooo glad she didn’t react as girls in chick flicks, being so moved by Nobuse’s gallantry that she falls back into a relationship with him. That would have been either immature or unrealistic. She’s moving on from Shin and until she’s built up enough emotional capital to love again, she should abstain from relationships. At the very least, the noble Nobuse deserves an unadulterated love born from his own merit.

Raigomaru's stalled flight was featured prominently this episode. So who really is Raigomaru? Personally, I believe all of the 6 young heroes/heroines are Raigomarus, albeit with different endings. There's 2 defining themes of the Raigomaru tale thusfar - aspiration and limitations. Raigomaru's aspiration was to take flight since he was chicken (limitation), he used hunger to escape his deathwish. Let's see how the Raigomaru tale illustrates the characters' predicaments and possible closure.

Shinichiro or Hiromi

Aspiration - to be with Hiromi (Shin)
Limitation - possible incest (a barrier which was removed last ep)
Ending - Raigomaru finds out he was really an eagle adopted by the funny farm and finally takes flight magnificently.

Jun

Aspiration - to be with Noe
Limitation - Incest!!
Ending - Raigomaru breaks the flight taboo and finds out that chickens can fly after all!

Nobuse

Aspiration - to be with Aiko
Limitation - Aiko doesn't love him.
Ending - Raigomaru abandon flight plans and accepts the cruel reality that he's a chicken but lives as nobly as a chicken possibly can manage.

Noe

Aspiration - to retrieve her tears through Shin
Limitation - Shin may not be that special person to do that after all.
Ending - Raigomaru realises that it wasn't the sky that he truly desired but to live an ordinary but happy life with Jibeta who has been by his side all this time.

Aiko

Aspiration - to be with Shin
Limitation - Shin loves a cuter girl!
Ending - Raigomaru realised that sky-soaring for a chicken is but a pipe-dream and goes back to pecking red seeds. Develops feelings for fellow-pecker Jibeta soon after.

Man, I wished I can draw. I could just be the next Enid Blyton of picture books XD

  1. How do you cure someone of siscon??? @_@

  2. from whom? >.>

  3. How do you cure it? Give them an overdose and kill them.

  4. “result in a forced ending like Kiminozo’

what the hell do you mean by this you siscon tanuki >_>

    The KimiNozo ending was PERFECT.

  5. Bah Shin-can and Hirmoi are not eagles, turkeys maybe but not eagles.

If any one is a bird of prey its Jun he’s a falcon.

As for a Canvas 2 ending it be a kick in the nuts for you. Well there is still some left undone, and thing might change. Yessssss.

  6. Billy/Neko/Impz: You need a bishoujo 10 x hotter than the sister to cure anyone of siscon. A Shirakawa-Kotori epic-class bishoujo. Of course Junichi is an anomaly. XD

Xellos-_^: Kiminozo spoilers – From what Takayuki did, he obviously loved Haruka more than Mitsuki. Mitsuki was always sacrificed for Haruka and it was surely more than pity or guilty that was driving Takayuki. But the end, against the drama buildup, Mitsuki was chosen instead. I cried tears of horror. A perfect Kiminozo end would be Mitsuki runs away with Akane XD

Crusader: Heh Shin and Hiromi can be anything except blood-related. In a DC context I wouldn’ mind since its writers enjoy the siscon scenario but it’s obviously taboo here in TT. So yeah as long as we see that Shin/Hiromi horse riding into sunset at series end, I’m not sure how they’ll resolve Jun’s tale. Falcon or not, if siscon is involved, he’d be hunted down faster than anime pr0n in Canada. Maybe Noe and Jun is not blood-related? XD

  7. Personally it was Canvas2 that threw me off. Not Kiminozo

  8. I think you have to find someone with a sister like yours and go for that sister instead. It’s like a trade to get around an obstacle. It might be a little sketchy, but it is ok from a biological standpoint.

I hope the whole Jibeta Raigomaru resolution ends reasonably. It’s been such a big part of the story that I would hate for it to be a rushed conclusion that doesn’t make sense or doesn’t flow naturally from the first few episodes.

  9. I’ve got to disagree, Stripey – Kiminozo’s ending absolutely fit the bill, and in fact the development was also always clearly pointing in Mitsuki’s direction. “You realize the most important things when they are suddenly gone”, and so did he. When he fainted from fever, he wasn’t thinking of Haruka, but Mitsuki. After Mitsuki left, he had _no_ enthusiasm left for Haruka either. Nah – he was in love with her pre-accident, that’s for sure. But after that: Not really imho.

    Oh, and Canvas2 was a ridiculous disaster. I was dumbstruck and thought that the Lunar TL was sh*tting me when he told me “hard to believe, but Elis ending”. Gawd. Ruining a perfectly good show like that… ^_^;

  10. True Tears has gone from a must-watch to ambivalent to drop in the space of three episodes…

Has to be a personal record. Cheap plot devices, shallow reasoning, and unlikeable characters in Shin and Hiromi have ruined the show for me.

There may be indeed a Canvas 2 or a NICE BOAT ending but I have nothing but distaste for this show at this point.

  11. T_I: Canvas2 end threw me off too but it was Stripey-approved since I’ve always believed Elis was ‘closer in soul’ with Hiroki. :)

Kabitzin: A problem arises when you can’t find anyone remotely as attractive as your sister. :P I’ve seen brothers of very attractive sisters being soo picky about their girlfriends that they had a lot of difficulty finding the ideal girl. Most of them give up after a while but live with the constant reminder that the most perfect girl in their lives happen to be their sister. XD

Mentar: I think they didn’t handle the post-accident transition from Haruka to Mitsuki properly. There’s a sense that the writers are half-hearted about the end and hoped to keep both girls open for as long as they could. As a result, the inconsistencies. But those are good reminders that I should rewatch the series sometime :P

dsong: Personally I thought True tears has so far been very consistent with its direction and development. Possibly the plot devices used haven’t been your cup of tea in romances :P (as you had mentioned a few eps earlier). I don’t see them as over-used/old since almost all romances are rehashes of the same few elements. It’s the execution that makes all the difference and TT has been a very well-crafted so far. Hoping you’d somehow enjoy the rest of the series :)

  12. I think you hit the nail on the head; it’s the plotting that’s bothered me more than anything else. The show seemed to be building upon a lot of substantial points – the sins of the parents being passed on to their children (Hiromi and her mother), betrayal and the struggle for forgiveness (Shin’s mother), experiencing heartbreak and learning to move on from the past (Hiromi, Aiko, Nobuse, Shin, Jun), and finding inspiration (Shin and his picture book).

Unfortunately the show seemed to trivialize these points in the past few episodes and took a lot of shortcuts. If subsequent events prove that it was all a red herring, I’m willing to give things a pass, but even in that case it comes across as a bait-and-switch technique. I would’ve loved to see them build upon their strengths, which is not what I saw.

I personally prefer romances that settles on a particular relationship and builds upon it, as opposed to the game of who-will-they-choose. As for this show, I feel like I’m being put on a merry-go-round and I’m not enjoying the ride. I will probably calm down at some point and give the rest of the show a look, but that time hasn’t come quite yet.

  13. I agree with the Raigomaru theory. Well done. =O

  14. dsong: Actually I tend to see the elements you mentioned as props for the Hiromi X shin relationship to grow and they have fulfilled that purpose in the last few eps. The only problem is they have yet to convincingly establish the validity of these plot devices yet which I suppose will be unveiled later. I for one would like to see Shin’s mom hatred for Mrs Yuasa fully explained. :P

    Ritsuka: Thanks! :) )

  15. Maybe Ai x Noe is still in the cards. I’d still support that ending however it came about.

  16. Ai-Noe? O_o; I prefer Nobuse-Noe, that pairing looks cute with a laid-back but caring boyfriend on one end and a genki moe Noe on the other. Probably has something to do with how shoujo-ai would feel out of place in the show, but maa ne…

And I think this ep validated quite a few thoughts I had about Jun. No mistake, he is a caring brother, but he got his priorities screwed up quite a bit from the moment he ‘agreed’ to the proxy love setup. ‘Agreed’ because really, I feel that Shinichiro merely said that as a spur-of-the moment thing, and Jun took advantage of it by dropping a vague reply before running off. Furthermore, he took the initiative and went out with Hiromi first, which he would then use to his advantage when confronting Shinichiro on the way back from dance practice.

By utilising the wording of Shinichiro’s ‘agreement’, he correctly did NOT confess to Hiromi, but merely took her out on a date instead. Shinichiro was, however, more emotionally attached to Noe than Jun to Hiromi, so when push came to shove, Shin ended up rushing a premature confession to Noe. In all this, I can only see how Jun has been very shrewd and manipulative with his actions, disregarding other people for the sake of his own goal. I understand that during the dates that he has had with Hiromi, he was very much of a gentleman, but I think that was merely to protect the agreement, not out of sincere interest in a relationship.

However, I must question his action of not willing to release Hiromi from the game of ‘fake love’. He began his involvement with setting up Shinichiro-Noe as a brother who wished to see his sister happy, but once he forced through the exchange, he began to prioritise the setup’s success over his sister’s happiness. Some people may argue that the setup’s success would mean Noe’s happiness, but if you look at the current situation now, which has shown Noe slowly but willingly withdrawn from Shinichiro, I doubt any method employed by Jun to forcibly pair them up again will result in a happy Noe. As it is right now, he is paying attention on holding up his side of the setup without realising that Noe has decided to let Shin go.

Moreover, to further argue that he has only prioritised the setup over Noe’s feelings, I will go as far as to say that he is partly responsible for the heartbreak that Noe is in. The meeting with Shin on the way home from dance practice only served to threaten Shin into a premature confession into Noe, one in which he had not moved on from Hiromi yet. I know some people will say that Jun hardly threatened Shin, but I beg to differ. Again, he took the initiative by going out with Hiromi, and used that initiative to tell Shinichiro to hurry up, or else he would break off from Hiromi. Considering why Shin ever contemplated the setup in the first place, that was a risk he could not take. However, had he truly prioritised Noe’s happiness, he would have slowly let Shin take his time with moving on from Hiromi to Noe, with him sealing off Hiromi from Shin. That would have given the Shin-Noe pairing more security and deeper meaning. Instead, he rushed Shin into a premature confession while he was in the aftermath of Hiromi’s revelations, resulting in the evanescent, though refreshing, Shin-Noe pairing.

To be fair to him, I do realise that ever since the bike crash scene, there has been no scene involving both Jun and Noe at the same time, so it is safe to assume that he has no idea of Noe’s current situation right now. My only hope for his character is that he will realise how Noe feels about Shinichiro right now, and release Hiromi from the game he’s playing. A tongue-lashing to Shin might be in order, if only to show that hurting Noe’s heart does have its consequences, but that should be it.

Jun may not be a devil or a villain, but make no mistake, he is no angel either. He fares only slightly better than Shin at the moment, and that’s not going to last if he continues to be ignorant towards Noe.

  17. that was rly nicely summed up. Love ur aspiration/ limitation on @ chars

  18. Cipher: Man, you have such great insight! I particularly agree with Jun’s losing of focus by trying to force the relationships instead of understanding Noe’s feelings. But with ep 11, I’m starting to wonder if Jun is beginning to develop feelings for Hiromi. Feisty girls have have all the charm :P

Viny: Thanks! With ep 11, I can safely assign Jun to Jibeta and Raigomaru to Shinichiro :P

  19. Jun is probably a bit peeved at having been used by Hiromi and wants to recover some pride. One way to do this is to reraise Hiromi’s bluff – which looks like the smart move to me.

Hiromi may have told Jun that she’s no longer interested in him, but it’s questionable as to whether her actions match her words. After all, she literally threw herself at him just a few days earlier. If she really likes some other guy, why not throw herself at the other guy when she is in need?

  20. @Stripey
Well I don’t mind if he does, but he has 2 eps to show that he’s proper boyfriend material AND to revoke what he said about him being involved with her only for Noe’s sake. It’s a big ask, but if there’s any anime that can pull it off well…

    @dsong
I’m pretty sure her actions are consistent with her words. Before all this, she only had Jun to run to, and since they were in the proxy relationship together and how he was using the relationship to keep Shin with Noe, I think she felt that she could equally use Jun as a person who would (on his wishes or not) hear her out and comfort her. I can’t explain why she would insist on Jun taking her out in the snow on his bike (with the eventually realised danger of crashing) otherwise.

But as it is now, after moving out of Shin’s house, she is the one that wants out of the relationship, and I do not see any conflicting action otherwise. The two meetings Jun and her have had after the bike crash had touched on the issue of breaking up, and I have yet to see her ‘throw herself’ at Jun again as of yet. So yes, I would say she’s been consistent with respect to her relationship with Jun, action-word wise.

As for Jun, well if reraising Hiromi’s bluff means for him to take what she says seriously and leave her, by all means I welcome that too. It would be a win-win situation for him actually. If Hiromi is lying about not liking Jun, then he’ll gain the truth about Hiromi’s affections and gain her back. If she’s not, then he can refocus his attention on comforting Noe as a big brother should be doing.

That being said I’m pretty sure in the end he’ll leave on his own accord, but not to ‘reraise her bluff’ as you say. He chose to try and uphold his side of the proxy love exchange by holding Hiromi to the relationship; the only reason I can really see him leaving would be because of Noe. Leaving out of pride would only show how little he valued the whole setup and, as a result, his perception of Noe’s happiness, which would be quite a conflict in contrast to his protective and caring attitude towards his sister.

  21. FYI, I’m trying to look at things from Jun’s perspective instead of using all the information I have as a viewer.

It may seem clear to all of us but Jun is surely acting on limited information.

  22. Considering limited information, what he does know is:
-he’s told Hiromi that he’s merely in this relationship to keep Shin with Noe
-Hiromi has disregarded his/their safety before in order to get him to drive her somewhere
-after the bike crash, Hiromi has insisted on breaking up with him, twice.

You can factor in the actual things done during the dates they’ve had in the relationship if you want, I chose to ignore them because I consider them as being done out of protecting the proxy love setup than out of any serious interest in her.

Personally, even given this information, points 1 and 2 hint towards Hiromi not being particularly affectionate towards Jun; indeed, as you yourself have said, she pretty much ‘used’ him as a place to turn to, given how he has used her as well for Noe’s sake. Point 3 would be a change in development without viewer omniscience, but it’s not too hard to predict, even from a limited information standpoint; after all, it is part of the many possible outcomes of the proxy love setup, and as the person who so readily accepted it, I should think that Jun realized as much as well. Which is why he is not relatively shocked or astounded at Hiromi’s break-up request, but instead switches to being defensive immediately upon proposal.

As for the bluff, I still stand by my previous post; it builds on Jun’s character as a basis for my extrapolation. I admit using unknown information in terms of Noe’s situation, but as the brother he is I do expect him to pick up on it sooner or later. And, actually, if you think of it, it’s not exactly entirely unknown information either because he was there with Noe when they both saw Shin hugging Hiromi, so the warning signs were there.
