ARIA The Origination 13
Having qualified as a Meister, the Galatica Aquamarine Akari Mizunashi takes over as Otome of the Aria Kingdom from the Snow White Alicia Carroll who gets kicked upstairs to the Gondola Association and definitively gives up her OAR by getting married. (I wish the last part was an April Fool's joke but it's not. It's not! T_T)

It wasn't that surprising that Alicia retired (man, I haven't heard that word used so much since the Touya Kouyo arc in Hikaru no Go) since Akari has given us a premonition in ARIETTA but getting married. WTH did *that* come from!!?? Well, we're not shown the husband so the hard core yuri fandumb still has wiggle room to assume that the partner may be a wife. Ahaha~~
That twirl around by Akari was just beautiful.
And of course I would have liked to hear Alicia say: 'Mmm... you look so cute I could just gobble you up.' cue screams of the Alicia x Akira shippers. In any case, all the yuri shippers can scream together. *zoom out to planet view of Aqua* IYAAAAAAAA~~~~
Megane de hensou! The spectacles just bring out Alicia's Oneechan Power. But I suppose she'll soon get promoted to the MILF list.
And there I was, grumbling that Athena-senpai didn't get her own standalone frame but lo and behold:
When first I saw Athena-senpai in her veil and gown, for the moment of eternity until the moon language comprehension kicked in, I was screaming: NOOOOOOOO!!! Not Athena getting married too!!!!!111one The shokku is too muchu!
Fortunately it's about her singing: she gets her own gig as an opera star! Teatro La Fenice here she comes! What worries me slightly about this career change is, you know, what they say about how it's not over until a certain type of lady sings.
And what a gorgeous ponytail; love Athena 4EVAR :3
I'm none too keen on the implication that the series may be pairing Akari with Akatsuki... the patissier oniichan might probably be a better match. Her new ultra-long fairy style hairdo wasn't bad either. Ai-chan becoming Akari's new apprentice was a nice way to end off on the one hand and to give a 'generations' / 'life goes on' feel to it.
The shokku of Alicia x Man left a pretty bitter taste in my mouth but if they're going to give us more OVAs e.g. Alicia, Akira, Athena as apprentice prequel or even a sequel 'few years later' sequel I'm not going to complain. It's the end of the era and while the anime as a whole has been great, Origination has been been excellent in terms of animation, art, pacing. *goes off to sob, howl, scream 'WTF!?' about Alica getting married out of the blue*

I think the thing that’s surprising about this development is the fact that, well, it literally came out of left field (the lives of the three Great Fairies outside of their work wasn’t really given that much detail). The only hint that was EVER given was the fact that Alicia never lived at ARIA company at all, and instead went home to ‘someone’.

and yes, tremendous shokku! although i’ve been spoiled by the manga.that was one huge curve ball no one saw coming. who knew alicia ever had a life outside of ARIA company?! so i guess i share your sorrow.

… I think I predicted elsewhere that this would end with a certain green-haired not-trap (aka Not-Impz) character coming to Aqua… and this episode proved me right, alas. Still… I was hoping they’d have room for one more OVA, but it doesn’t look like that’s in the cards.
Still, life goes on, and Alicia got a lovely send-off. Damn it, where’d I put that wine…? And Akari with an Alicia-style hairstyle and less baby fat? Daaaaaaaamn… I can see the Akari brigade’s numbers growing as we speak.

Ah well. It’s not so much that I mind Alicia getting married per se but that it was just dropped on us like that out of nowhere. The shokku was too much. I suppose the Anna-senpai episode was an oblique foreshadowing of this but it was also quite unfortunate that the marriage and the undine retirement had to go hand in hand… at least her Gondola Association work seems important and well paid!
The megane oneesama moe did help to salve the wounds inflicted on the destruction of my yuri water wonderland though. LOL

maglor, thanks for the clarification! Such a relief that Athena-senpai’s svelte figure will not be at risk from occupational hazard.
And wow, such a specific inference of her role from just her costume! I’d paid big money to see Athena sing too.

It wasn’t too hard when you consider that
1) It would be a famous, often performed opera
2) There is a wedding
3) The Bride would be singing by herself for extended time, and not be in jovial mood.
The #3 pretty much excluded most operas except for Lucia and some other not-often performed operas. If it had a splotch of red on the dress, Lucia would be the only one satisfying the criterion, but I guess animators did not want to disturb the peace loving viewers with suggestion of violence.

OMG…I’ve watched this series since the beginning, and I can’t believe its gone… ;0;
All in all though…what a great ending! I love Athena-senpai’s and akari-chan’s new hair styles! I really wish we had gotten the opportunity to see the others, too… ;-;
Does anyone know if there’s going to be more after Origination? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!!!!!! JUST ONE MORE SEASON!!!!!!

katsuya: They wrapped up the manga with this last episode… so I doubt it, which is where my laments come from. I doubt we’ll even get an OVA, since they tied everything up.

I had heard/read about Alicia’s marriage being part of the manga, which was the only way I really knew, since my knowledge of moon speak is extremely limited. But man, I’m such a baby, I was crying right along with Akari just before Alicia’s retirement. I take comfort in the fact that Akari goes from cute girl to hot lady, though.

It’s kind of sad that, due to by busy work schedule, I had to hold off finishing ARIA the Origination for several months… That, and I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t afraid of seeing something so good end. Now that I’ve finally found the time, I found that the closure to the franchise wasn’t that bad… Bittersweet, and there were tears shed in the process, but not in sadness, but of happiness for such a great end.
Indeed, it completes the circle, with Akari now where Alicia was, and Ai-chan taking up her mantle as the undine-in-training. And life in Neo Venezia goes on…
