Lucky Star upgrade!

Maybe I'd be more passionate about pursuing Lucky Star (stopped at ep 4) if Kagami had looked like this. Of course the charm of L*S is not quite the bishoujo fare but its subtle humour and uncanny ability to connect with the viewers. Still I really wouldn't have minded a harem (yuri-sect) variant of L*S since KyoAni does it so well.

Maybe I'd get lucky with the OVA?

  1. For some inexplicable reason, Lucky Star just doesn’t appeal to me.

    /shrugs

  2. Though true that looking like gives her a wider range of facial expressions when she’s all tsun-tsun… but we all know little girls sell better AMIRITE?!

  3. It would be pretty cool to see Lucky Star with character designs along the lines of Clannad’s…I doubt we’ll get to see that in the OVA, but I’m with you, a Lucky Star Alternative would be fun to watch.

  4. >>>but we all know little girls sell better AMIRITE?!

    What? Kinda like this?

  5. …kagami suddenly looks delicious…
now i am jealous of konata

  6. I’m quite a fan of the L*S manga… so my joy of animated L*S was lessened by the parade of “anime-only inserted references and product placement”.

Some experimentation… like a bishoujo episode would have been very cool though.

I’ve seen a few fanwork interpretations of the characters that were quite charming.

  7. /me ponders Lucky Star drawn in CLAMP style.

    Hmm…

  8. hm… I can’t imagine Kagami doing the LS gags with that kinda face :S

  9. I do believe I could have enjoyed it more if it was like this… I still liked all the humour to begin with though…

  10. watched up to ep 11 never really got into it. I enjoy anime but I hardly get all these allusions frankly failed to connect with the show. The humour and target audience just probably weren’t in my demographic.

  11. double: I think those looking for LOL humor may be disappointed. I didn’t find L*S funny, just endearing. :) Of course i’ve only seen 4 eps.

Os: I think this is real proof that I’m no lolicon after all XD

suguru: I for out would like to see Kagami in gym outfit and reenact the classic Clannad “trapped-in-gym-store” scene (ala Kyou). Clannad crossovers FTW! XD

    Beowulf Lee: I cheered. XD

EvilDevil: I think the fantabulous Japanaese seifuku deserves some credit there :P

vexx: remind me to dig into Zyl’s L*S manga when he returns XD

Skane: /ponders L*S in Doumu crossed-eyed Feena style. XD

Viny: I’ll never see her eating coronet in the same light either XD

Deranged: It somehow inflames my imaginations by quite a bit too. :P

holyman282: I need to finish it up sometime. Maybe I’d marathon it with Zyl when he returns to the Island republic :)

  12. Lucky*Star, for me, was excellent when it stuck to the manga material (rather like a Japanese version of the comics Peanuts or Zits, 4-koma style). The pop culture references were tolerable when they were within manga context (like Konata *does* play an MMO and Yui *does* drive like a maniac) — but the anime-only parts like Anime-Tenchou or Lucky Channel quickly lost their charm with the repetition and expenditure of time budget.

In fact, people who pick up the manga expecting the sort of nonsense inserted into the anime adaptation will probably be quite disappointed at what is essentially a “daily life foibles” comic.

Its not really a LULZ sort of humor, its endearing, brings a smile, and a fair amount of “I’ve been in that situation” sort of funny.

I have a bad feeling the upcoming OVA is just going to be a blatant 30 minute commercial omake that really doesn’t have much to do with the manga.

  13. I enjoyed lucky star becos I alrdy foresee kagami’s upgraded version since day one *snicker*

  14. Oh my, Lucky Star wasn’t really the out-and-out laugh fest some people might have expected, but it was enjoyable in that quirky kind of way, as it juxtaposes the wierdness of otaku culture (care of Konata) with the ‘normality’ of everyone else’s perspectives (care of Kagami — who is, appropriately, named after the word ‘mirror’). It’s no wonder then how much it polarized the people that watched it; I loved it, but my friends who’ve enjoyed Minami-ke and Ichigo Marshmallow (lolicon magnet if there ever is one) found it utterly dull.

  15. You shouldn’t have stopped at episode 4 since they changed directors after that episode for a reason…

  16. vexx: I think the “oh my, I did that to” really came across strongly for me. It doesn’t help that I was a fighter in an MMORPG. :P

crimson: You’d make a fortune helping little boys pick out potential gfs then XD

Myssa Rei: Ah interesting reminder on how Kagami is the word play on the world at large :)

Flamehaze: ah yet another reason to continue I suppose :)

  17. How about we do a trade? You finish watching L*S, I’ll watch AIR.

  18. … well, at least the series wasn’t as bad as the OVA sounds to be – the Animate Tenchou really isn’t THAT funny, at least not in more than very small doses. And 30 minutes of him sounds like 28 minutes too many. :P

And no Miyuki, Kagami, Tsukasa, Yutaka, Minami-chan, Hiyorin, Patty-chan, and so forth? Yup… nice way to blow it, Kadokawa.

  19. Haesslich: Agreed, more Patty would be nice, but I think a better idea would have been a ‘fantasy’ re-enactment of the ‘Konata/Kagami’ set of posters (runaway bride-girl wedding-honeymoon). Ooooh boy.

  20. Zyl: How about you join me to perform this at our next (and first) anime/cosplay convention and I watch L*S… LOL!

Acually I was hoping to marathon part of it with you when you return :)

Haesslich: I haven’t seen the tenchou parts but if it gets old like Lucky channel, then the OVA doesn’t sound as exciting then :P

Myssa Rei: I actually wouldn’t mind more Konata in MMORPG mode since that’s something close at heart for me :)

  21. Stripey: Think ‘Team Rocket Launches Again’ set in an Animate store. With the Anime Tenchou as both members of Team Rocket… complete with being blown to hell as his plot to get Konata to buy stuff fails. His Burning Passion doesn’t work on her… and honestly, it got tiresome after a bit.

Part of what made Lucky Star work for me was the quirky humor… and more importantly, the interactions between the girls. It wasn’t the Konata show – and the OVA sounds like it’ll be just that.

  22. C’mon Haess, wasn’t you who actually mentioned that this is all part of Kadokawa’s scheme anyway? :) Though… Runaway Bride starring Kagami and Konata sounds way better than 30 or so minutes of Anime Tenchou (whose saving grace was the episode where he finagled Keroro Gunso and co into his plans).

  23. No, I was the one who said that Kadokawa would find a way to run two franchises into the ground.. and they’re running Lucky Star into the ground. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they really WERE behind this ‘delivery health’ shop advertisement…

  24. *facepalms* I’d rather hope that Kadokawa, for all its profit-driven marketing antics, *wasn’t* behind that.

Honestly though, where do you find these things Haess? x_o

  25. Kotaku, Alafista, etc. I was actually browsing Kotaku when I saw that… which is why I immediately brought it out. And it was linked to by Alafista, among others. Given the whole ‘Kadokawa pimping out Lucky Star and Haruhi’ theme, it seemed appropriate.

  26. >>http://kotaku.com/5010136/lucky-star-used-for-prostitution-advert

LOL! One of the reasons why my wife forbids me to go Japan with Zyl ONLY. XD

  27. That’s a great bod rendition of Kagami too! :)
