The incongruent charms of PVC figures and Nendroids/Figma

One of my laments during the last Wonderfest was the severely diminished PVC figures showing by Goodsmile Company/Max Factory. While my 2008 GSC/MF preorders/purchases remain healthy (maybe a little too genki for my wallet), I can't help but feel that too much of GSC/MF's resources are getting channeled to Nendroid/Figma productions.

While I understand the cute and interactive charm of Nendroid/Figma, it baffles me to see many PVC figure collectors diversifying to these figure derivatives since I thought both catered to very different collector profiles. For this tanuki, static PVC is art and their posable cousins, toys (albeit high grade, expensive ones). I suppose I'm one of those narrow-minded PVC purists who see static figures as avatars of anime/eroge goddesses meant to be admired behind glass walls, unspoiled by the elements and unsoiled by human hands. Figma and Nendroids, on the other hand, are made to be played and manhandled with little shred of dignity. If Nendroids and Figmas represent the cute and fun component of the 2D world respectively, PVC figures must then epitomise 2D beauty.

Are you a figure collector? Do you dabble in Nendroids/Figma too? Come share your motivations deviating from the 'enlightened' path of PVC. XD

  1. Anything that has movable parts has them for a good reason. To play with them until all the joints turn loose.

The only action figures I dabble in are Revoltechs. I would have gotten a Nagato Yuki figma if I had remembered to while I was in Tokyo last month. Nendroids are quite a turn-off for me.

  2. I personally think figmas are hideous. theyre like freaking GI Joe action figures!! XD I agree figures are meant to be “admired behind a glass wall” which is why since I have no glass wall I only buy trading figures that I allow to collect dust on my manga shelf. i only have 1 mikuru nendroid that ill never buy again because theyre small and annoying to put together

  3. I have 1 Nendroid, Saber. I got it because it was Saber and it was one of the first ones. I really haven’t felt the pull to get into nendroids/figmas/whatever thing with ugly exposed joints.

  4. Totally unimpressed with nendroid/figmas other than the ability to do stop-motion animation with them. That’s really it.

As a collection item, they’re worthless to me.

  5. I personally just bought a FnS Archer Nendroid, I’m just like fiddle with the pose the first day then put them neatly on the shelf the second. Regardless it’s PVC or Nenroid, it’s just how an otaku/tanuki treasure it. I reckon Nenroids are alright as long as you know how to pose them.

  6. I too believe they should be viewed behind proper protection… My gundams however are too tempting to play with. It has gotten to the point that I may two, one for play and the other for display… orz

  7. While I prefer static PVC, i also collect nendoroids, and have 1 figma atm (saber). I like my PVC more than nendos tho, the only thing I like from nendo is the cuteness, but I hate the joints (and their stability.. easy to break when moved).

I only buy nendos for the character that I like, but sometime I get PVC w/o knowing the character (moe factor!)

I guess each type have their own charm. static PVC for moe beauty, nendoroid for the cuteness, and figma as a toy :D

  8. I adore Nendoroids; they’re so damn cute. I don’t mind them because they actually look nice. Figmas on the other hand, I think are very ugly. I’ll stick with PVCs and some Nendoroids, but until Figmas look decent, none of them for me.

  9. i personally agree with you, pvc is art and joints are toys. i only have on revoltech and it’s terrible. i only bought it for the character. As for nendoroids it all depends greatly on the character. I only have one pre-ordered so i can’t even say if i like the quality of not since i don’t own it yet. With action figures, they break and the joints look terrible. For someone like me who doesn’t play with my figures having a jointed action figrue just seems more like a toy to me. They are in a different class of their own and i doubt i’ll be rushing to buy any figmas anytime soon.

  10. Gunner ZAKU Warrior is not a toy!!!

*actually I broke the power cable from the Orthos cannon to the battery pack while erm rearranging its pose orz*

  11. Yuki compels you.

    Nagato, Nagato, Nagato, etc…

The charm lies in the realisation of imagination.

    Cheers.

  12. I pretty much go for PVCs, and figmas / Nendroids if I feel like it. Still, I only have one figma on order, with the rest being PVC.

  13. double: Revoltechs are mecha? I’m ok with mecha movables if only for the fact that mecha have joints like those products. For figmas, it’s joints in place of elbows/ankles…ewww :P

Hinano: Let’s get Hinano a glass cabinet! I can forsee JP’s post going “What I was forced to buy this week”…. XD

super rats: Hey what a coincidence! I have that Saber nendroid too. PVC bishoujos are still the way to go! I suppose I wouldn’t be seeing you publish a figma photobook anytime soon :)

vexx: True, we should leave them to the stop-motion experts then. Us PVC mortals should stay with the static beauties :)

Viny: Maybe because I grew up playing with star wars action figures. Anything that has joints and moves is regarded as toys by me :P

Deranged/Zyl: Gundams are a different matter all together. They are considered engineering feats by me and hence art :) The design/engineering that goes into every Gunpla is astounding. Plus their joints are so beautifully concealed I’d collect them if I weren’t more into bishoujos :P

ron~: Oops, broken joints, yet another reason not to get figmas :P Yeah but you’re right, to each his own. If my blessings to those who enjoy figmas too :)

IcyStorm: Besides being cute, Nendroids have great interchangability for more interactive fun. but that also requires a sizable Nen collection :P

Dancing Queen: hmm with the no. of commenters speaking out against figmas, I wonder if figmas is a doomed venture for MaxFac… Pls MF, go back to your true love of PVC bishoujos! XD

Skane: LOL! I… was unmoved XD

Zeroblade: Yep, PVC still rulez :)

  14. Given what I have seen in the figurine market here, Figma figurines are doing pretty well (they’re usually sold out). Sometimes I wonder whether plamo may have inspired people to like poseable figurines more. It also helps that they are using popular characters first.

    Cheers.

  15. I’m a canon PVC collector. Out of all the Shanas that are available, I’ll only buy the school uniform ones or the flame haze ones. No maids or swimsuits or whatnot. While they’re pretty to look at and such poses have appeared in Megami posters, etc, I tend not to buy them since that’s not how she appears a majority of the time in the series.

It’s mostly my wallet talking. If money were no object, I’d get everything. But in general I don’t find Nedoroids -that- cute. It’s a bit too SD for me. Figmas do look pretty, although I think I’ll get bored of the poseability after a while and then just notice all those unpretty ball joints.

  16. Wait a min… are you that fabled Shana PVC figure collector at K… Oops better not divulge our secret identities XD

I’m beginning to understand the importance of canon in figures :) That’s why I’m still holding out against that Kotobukiya gothloli Rei though she’d go very well with my Asuka.

  17. Well I for once do like Figmas (don

  18. Thanks for the perspective from the Figma camp! :) While I still wouldn’t be getting figma anytime soon, I now can better see its allure.
