Praiseworthy anime sequels – The tanuki's choice

Sequels are tough deals. While burdened with the hopes of the original's fans, they also need to avoid being merely 'more of the same' for keeping the franchise refreshing yet accessible to new viewers. Those are probably some reasons why most sequels fail under the crushing weight of having to balance these considerations. Well executed sequels are far and few but when one comes along, it surely is deserving of the highest praise. And that is the purpose of this entry.
Here's a tribute to some of the greatest sequels animedom has to offer.
DCIISS - The series that inspired this entry. My ep 10 download just completed and I can't wait to finish this post to see how Otome deals with Otouto's fate. Of course one can argue DCIISS is only comparatively because of the sewage DCII is made of.
Magical Girl lyrical Nanoha As - The fact that I don't own Nanoha series 1 DVDs but religiously rewatch scenes from As should say a lot.
Shakugan no Shana II - Actually I haven't completed the series (2 eps to go) but season 2 has such great character development (and excellent fight sequences - Wirhelmina vs Sabrac) that it thoroughly overshadowed its predecessor. Hecate in Konoe mode probably helped.
Ai Yori Aoshi Enishi - Less harem hijnks and more focused character development (especially of one of my favourite underdog in love) has to be a good thing.
Black Lagoon 2nd Barrage - Gretel won this for the season. One of the most affecting anime stories to date.
Full metal panic ~ The second raid - KyoAni ousting GONZO out of the bridge to fully helm the production must be the reason why TSR is so much superior.
Jubei chan 2 - Again, I don't remember what happened in Season 1 but its Season 2 DVDs are one of the most rewatched in this household.
Rozen Maiden Traumend - With a superb soundtrack (my top 5 in fact) and more emphasis on the Alice game, it manages to surpass what I already deem to be a very good season 1. Pity its DVDs are already sold out at therightstuff.
I had originally include ROD but felt that it'd be unfair comparing an OVA to a full 2-cour series. Hoping Code Geass R2 and Aria the Natural makes this list once I'm done with them.

Shana II’s good? I thought it was really crappy.
And KyoAni really has to get started on the 4th season of FMP.

i agree with you regarding jubei2, i own season2 dvd bit didn’t bother to get season1.
as for ROD, the oav and tv are both good in their way.
Miss Deep made the oav for me and nene chasing Yomiko in the library in tv was absolutely wonderful.

I always preferred the first Full Metal Panic! personally.

“And KyoAni really has to get started on the 4th season of FMP.”
Only after they make Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. Which will probably make it on the list if it sticks to the source…

Oh my goodness, have to disagree with you on that, although I liked SNS2 overall.

The only one I can comment on here is Shana II, and even then, only in the context of never seeing the first one. Still, it turned out to be quite a decent show in the closing parts, although it was bookended by reams of boredom at the start and had what I thought was a poor ending. You can judge for yourself.
Does D.C.S.S count as a sequel, since DCIISS does? I didn’t think it was half bad; although Aisia was plenty annoying, there were was some great D.C.-style drama in the end. I think… I haven’t seen it in a bit.
Maybe it’s just that I don’t know many other sequels that I recommend – unless you count remakes.

SnSII >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Zero no Tsukaima II in mathematical notation.

It’s Hansel and Gretel you fool they are one package you cannot seperated one from the other without consequences. Much like Rock found to his cost…

The thing with Shana i reckon is that the 2nd season took advantage of the drama filled 1st season. All it did was made a three-ish arcs, continued with the same triangular relationship till the end. Good, but the 1st one is better

double/Viny: Shana II was superior for me mainly because the characters were fleshed out a lot more with them grappling with deeper issues. I’ve grown to like almost the a lot more cast even more with the 2nd season. Even the least of the cast like Tanaka had worthy developments. Probably another reason was season 1 was a lot more shounenesque.
Xellos^_-: Miss Deep was good indeed. Paper manipulation got to be one of the coolest anime power to date.
Kaioshin Sama: One of my laments of FMP1 (good as it was) was how one-dimensional Kaname was. She came as thoroughly across as tsun tsun and this was contrasted by TSR where while she was still violent, she was portrayed much more human (with her fears and weaknesses) hence more endearing.
quigonkenny: I was under the impression that FMP3 or 4 is not viable since there isn’t enough novel material yet?
Kabitzin: I still have 2 eps to go but I’m hoping the Konoe plot element would be harvested at the end of the series. If not at least play a critical role in the next season.
CCY: DCSS is a truer sequel to DCI than DCII is since there is continuity in the cast and to a lesser extent the story.
Personally, Aisia is to DCSS what the banana-hating robot is to DCII. I love her character design but hated how she cheapened the franchise with juvenile issues that is the antithesis of DCI
Crimson: Agreed! XD
Crusader: No interest in shotas XD Light haired gun toting gothlolis on the other hand…

The only satisfaction you will get out of the Konoe plot is her role in the Shana-tan omake.

It’s funny how sequels can be hit-or-miss…DC II SS is good enough so far to erase my nightmares of DC II first season, and I couldn’t agree more on Ai Yori Aoshi Enishi (although Aoi annoyed me and I love Tina Foster, so that alone explains why). Shana II kind of bored me through the first half though, since I’m not a big fan of Konoe or Yoshida, and the whole drawn-out love triange/quadrangle just made me want to smack Yuuji with something heavy, although the second half did get better. When it comes to Full Metal Panic, I’m sure I’m in the minority, but hands-down my favorite of the FMPs is Fumoffu.
The other sequel of sorts I’d rank as really good is the To Heart 2 OVAs. The TV series was a little disappointing compared to the original To Heart, but the OVAs (for me anyway) were both moe and really entertaining. I didn’t really “get” why everyone liked Tama-nee so much until the OVAs came out, but now I have seen the light ^_^

@ Stripey:
You missed one of the greatest sequels ever…..Honey & Clover II
…..
I would even go so far as to say that H&C’s 2nd season is superior to the first

I loved Ai Yori Aoshi Enishi, especially how they fleshed out Tina’s character. Though I found the love scene between Kaoru and Aoi to be uncalled for… =__=;; Or I just wanted Aoi to remain as pure as ever lol.

Kabitzin: Ah ic… Was hoping she’d join the good side like good ol shounen series XD The Konoe bits were important to me because it was the platform by which Kazumi and especially Shana matured in dealing with their feelings for Yuuji.
suguru: I like Aoi very too though I think Tina was the more interesting character. Playing lil miss Perfect gets a little dull after a while
I enjoyed FMF very much too. It have a great balance of humor and character development. A thoroughly enjoyable series. As for Toheart2, while I’m a HUGE fan of Konomi, I can’t shake the feeling how poor the series is compared to ToHeart. Haven’t seen the OVAs, will give it a shot since Zyl and you have enjoyed it
Kanon_fan82: Heh, haven’t seen H&CII. Honestly H&C was a mixed bag for me. There were some REALLY brilliant moments, mostly from the Mayama, Yamada, rika triangle. but the other triangle totally fell flat with me. XD Will give H&CII a chance sometime in the future though
usagijen: Now you’ve got me thinking if I should get that Enishi DVDs

@ Stripey:
the 2nd love triangle pretty much disappears in H&C II…….there is a more a focus on individual characters…….especially Morita-san

I thought I should write a comment here now that I have finished watching the whole Aria franchise.
First of all; I had always thought that you had watched all Aria seasons. I’m pretty surprised that you haven’t finished Natural even.
Second; Natural was an ok season, because the first half wasn’t that “warm and fuzzy” as the first season, but the latter half of it was just as awesome as s1. Instead, Origination turned out to be an absolute masterpiece. I was moved to tears during most of the episodes, and the ending was just superb. They tied the bag perfectly after all these seasons of the anime. I highly recommend that you finish Natural and watch Origination NOW!

Kanon_fan82: Ah that’s good to hear. Frankly Morita was one of my least favourite characters. Maybe more insights into his thoughts would make hime more endearing.
flaskis: Ah ic, thanks for moderating my expectations for Natural. I’m waiting for the DVD releases from Nozomi entertainment though
Have preordered the Aria the animation already. Can’t wait to get my paws on Origination! XD
