wtf UTF8

A couple of WordPress upgrades ago, all the moon language on this blog phased into an even more unknowable language. After fiddling with the ja.mo file, I *finally* (slowpoke.jpg) realized that the problem was due to the CHARSET being defined as 'utf8' in the wpconfig.php. The fix was to remove the value (leaving just '') and now the moon language in the database can be read again!

  1. Ahh, UTF8 conversion… So you are back in latin? This could mess you up if you ever need to move the WP database.

  2. Gah! I wish I didn’t procrastinate when I first read your post over a year and half ago. I had the exact same thought as you: ‘OMG this sounds really painful.’

Actually I haven’t used all that much moon language in the blog text… it’s mainly for the links and the randomized taglines. What’s most annoying is that I can’t seem to enter any Japanese text at all when the charaset is defined as UTF8. I don’t use it much but I’d just like to have the option.

About moving the WP database… OTL I don’t even want to consider that. orz orz orz I’m just a ordinary blog user who wants to blog! Unfortunately the WP development community doesn’t consist much of ordinary users…

  3. From the comments it looks like Stripey wants to try his paw at it haha =3.

  4. Naw, no paw was used in any attempt. I’m pretty sure because I do most of the maintenance and upgrading for his blog too. :(

  5. When you choose UTF8 in your wp-config you also need to go through all your WordPress tables in your database and convert them to UTF8. Otherwise you will be unable to enter or read the odd characters that are already in the database.

Just altering the wp-config values is not enough.

  7. mellow_bunny, thanks for the tip. It should have been obvious but I really had no idea… Gah, I’ve just had a look at the view from myPHPadmin and all the tables are still defined as latin… will have to do something about this when I get to a country where the internet connection is more stable. And hopefully without messing up my database too. *gnashes teeth*

jp, argh my membership is completely against my will. What’s up with the minaidehazukashii domain/hosting? Hontouni.com got suspended because my credit card was going to expire in three months (even though hosting fees were only due, like, six months later!).

  8. JP and Hinano got DDOS’ed to hell or something and kept getting some BS about CPU overage. They moved to http://jphinano.wordpress.com/ and engaged (u see what I did there) in blog gattai.

You should save a whole copy of the database before you begin, and not just an SQL dump. The link I posted in my previous comment on this page should give insight on steps to take. The plugins worked perfectly on posts, but only so-so on comments. Thankfully there wasn’t much moonspeak in my comments. The plugins may have improved since I used them.

  9. Ah, so that’s why this whole issue is salient again for jp.

Gah, I didn’t actually know the different btw saving a copy of the whole database and an SQL dump. orz Also the jonkenpon link is dead and the Codex link (as well as related WP forum threads) say that the plugin you used has caused corruption of databases post-WP 2.2 plus the plugin hasn’t be updated since. OTL

  10. Wow, haha, interesting… I will have to look into it some more, but the alternative I recall was a pretty painful, unfriendly process. I’ve updated the link to this process.
