Figure display – Getto!

The wait is finally over! After more than 10 visits to IKEA, countless family conferences with my wife and in-depth discussions with dedicated PVC consultant - it is finally done. My PVC beauties can once again see the light of day without risking the dehabilitating effects of dust! All thanks to IKEA's Bertby.

The Bertby has a shelf area of 30cm by 16cm and, as shown from my crappy camera phone picture, is able to accommodate up to 3 figures per shelf. Adjusting the shelf height to house 1/8 figures (varying from 22cm to 25cm), 7 levels can be created, allowing up to 21 plastic bishoujos to pour forth their blinding beauty at any one time. Of course given that the shelves have a depth of only 16cm, figures like Alter's Fate Testarossa, even though of 1/8 scale, cannot be accommodated. Then again, Alter Fate deserves a palace and I promise to make it up to Fate chan when the economy gets better.

For those looking for a compact wall-mount figure display, do check out the Bertby. Speaking of wall mounting, remember my previous lament of how the 2 Bertbys cost 2 good S$100 more for the delivery/assembly/wall mounting installation? I'm sooo glad I took Zyl's advice to leave it to the pros. Watching them assemble, mount and level the twin cabinets to perfection made me realise the complexity of the task. That was 100 bucks well spent.

Currently only 28 of my 41 figures can be displayed due to

1) Unsuitable sized PVC figures (accounts for less than 5).
2) Hijack of display space by beloved wife (who incidentally purchased the Bertbys as a early Xmas gift for her favourite tanuki).

Now to hatch a plot to drive out my wife's porcelain Nendroids - Precious moments figures - without getting myself driven out of the house. XD

PS: Do also check out other figure displays I found from researching for figure displays. These collectors are my heroes.

  1. looks really really good, i’d need a ton of those to fit all my figures but looks amazing

  2. i’d buy besta/inerda storage system. you have full autonomy of customisation + you can have MORE space for all of your fig. i’m usin git to house my 26 afv + ship models and 2 fig

  3. Nice.

My sister’s former boyfriend’s mom had a giant display shelf filled with those Precious Moments figures.

  4. Very nice! Definitely an impressive collection, if they ever open a bishoujo figure museum they should make you the curator. Ikea is great–half the furniture in our house came from there :)

  5. Great to see that your princesses of PVC have found a home. Though its probably a good thing you paid for the installation as doing wall mounted cases can be a pain. Though if it was a standing cabinet I’d put it together myself.

  6. 16cm depth would not be enough for me, personally. ^^; My current shelving all have a minimum of 35cm depth. Alter’s Yagami Hayate resides comfortably on one of them. Then again… I’m not primarily a collector of humanoid figurines, but animalistic ones, where length is the issue, and not height (usually).

    Cheers.

  7. I’m mad jealous of two things
    1)The shelves themselves.
    2)Alicia…MAD jealous.

Nice collection, and that bertby looks like a perfect way to display your beauties. I shall consider setting aside some money for one in the future.

  8. Thanks for sharing the photo. Looks great – though I have some sympathy for your wife having space (she did buy the shelves afterall), the PMs do look a tad incongruous. Get her to replace them with MOAR Nendroids! :3

While you’re not exactly Moyism or Dancing Queen in terms of buying figures, the fact that you’ve already max-ed out your two shelves means that you’ll have to use some sort of rotation system… looking forward to seeing some thematic displays in the future. Studio, fashion style, dominant colour etc…

  9. Dancing Queen: hehe one of my ways to curb my figure spending! now I have to consider the display constraints before making that preorder XD

c2710: Hmm the besta/inerda is more for storage than display imho. :P

Asrialys: Now you’ve given my wife ideas. XD Doesn’t bode well for my territorial fight for shelf space :P

Kairu Ishimaru: Or you would get the more economical Detolf. goes for S$79 during discounts which happen quite often :)

sung gyu: Yes, I heartily recommend it! :) More suitable for 1/8s though.
suguru: Where do I apply? XD

Zeroblade: Woah a nice space for Fate chan! Your display shelves? :)

Adun: heh my missus favoured something wall mounted to reduce the footprint. Turned out pretty well for the Bertby. :)

Skane: Animalistic? Zoids? :) The lack of depth is both the Bertby’s strength and weakness. Since I insist on only displaying 1 layer of figures per shelf, additional depth would be a waste. But that also rules some of my more dynamic figures. I should start looking for another display shelf for my Alter Fate/Hayate :P

Zyl: Alternatively I should buy another 5 Bertby and fill up the much longer adjoining wall with MOAR figures. XD Wife-chan have these 2 all to herself :) Day dreams aside, I’d need to have a much bigger collection to be able to go thematic. I wanted to a maker theme (ie Alter, GSC, MaxFac etc) but realise I just don’t have enough. I need to buy more figures srsly XD

  10. asldfijdk!!! That looks gorgeous! BTW, I personally like the way you organized a lot better than most figure collectors(like the one you had link to) because it looks a lot cleaner. I think figures can look rather ugly if too much of them are crammed into a small space. I think the way you spaced them are just about right. ^^

  11. To Stripey,

Yes, Zoids. I have over 220+ models (and counting) distributed over 21 shelves, various nooks and crannies, and some MISBs on the floor. With more on the way. It is a collection that started from 1989, so yeah…

(And then there are the various Gundams I have too…)

Yagami Hayate is the FIRST, and ONLY, anime figurine I have. Which means I am constantly bothered by the nagging feeling that she is feeling… lonely.

However, I am massively reluctant to get the other Alter MSLN models because I am not so “awed” by them. I considered getting the Psychodelic-Moelicious Asakura Ryoko model, but that led to the problem of what theme/guideline would that lead to in my anime figurine purchases?

(The fun in Psycho-Moe lies in the animated visual/audio of their dual-personalities. This is greatly hampered by the restrictions of a static PVC model. It is hard… to capture a snapshot of the essence of what makes them Psycho-Moe, which is why the Asakura Ryoko model is so good. That smile. That pose. That knife. Bingo.)

I could also go the other extreme and just get figurines of Hayate, but that would seem pretty sad… to me at least. I am already beating myself not to touch the FIGMA line of figurines, because I can tell it will lead me into a blackhole of financial ruin (I exaggerate, but it WILL greatly hurt my allocated budget for model purchases).

    Models-wise… I need to buy ANOTHER display cabinet in the near future. -,-;

    For the collection!

    Cheers.

  12. i don’t see feito-chan

are you keeping her in bed…i mean at bedside

  13. Skane, let’s hope that there will be a Kaede figure where she is stirring an empty pot with those blank 0_0 eyes? Or a suitably psycho-moe Kotohona figure (what would be your ideal design for her?) I definitely think you would enjoy owning Ryoko with knife – I do! *face rub*

  14. Please, dont let Alter Fate’s apart with the other figures!!
Nice and very cool shelf you got.

  15. One word:
    woot!

Do you have to tend to the humidity or whatever level within the cabinet though to ensure no mould grows on their skirts? :D

  16. muhootsaver: Thanks! That was my intent exactly which is why my figure collection is growing at such a slow rate that is disproportionate to my figure passion :) While I still think the massive displays always have the shock and awe feeling, I prefer to summon forth the beauty of each PVC by giving each of them the required space to shine. of course another factor is that my humble adobe has no space for such extensive displays :)

Skane: 21 SHELVES! Woah, that would be a sight to behold. :) Hayate is lonely surely XD You may want to consider another Hayate figure to keep her company

    http://www.volks.co.jp/jp/moekore/pls_10hayate.html

Figmas are a different class of PVC altogether. As mentioned before they’re toys. Being articulatible invites you to play with them. PVC has a ‘HANDS OFF! Don’t stain my beauty” feeling. Totally different level of collection altogether. As a PVC purist, I’d say keep your moolah for True Beauty :)

Xellos-_^: Heh, I can’t fit her into the cabinet. I need somthing else of both Alter Fate and Hayate XD

phossil: Thanks! LOoks like I need more since my wife is invading with her procelain nendroids XD

crimson: Thanks for the reminder! Actually I have plans to put a cup of those dessication liquid to keep the moisture down. :)

  17. Nice setup…I’ve really gotta get something like that some time. On the other hand, though, it never occurred to me how being married can affect things like merchandise displays…good luck with that one ^^;;

  18. heh thankfully wife-chan is pretty accommodating when it comes to The Passion. Still I’m having a problem with the boxes. Need to fix up the rack in my storage room next XD
