Asatte no houkou DVDs – Getto!
Since the Asatte no Houkou DVD boxset appeared at my favourite anime DVD shop about a year ago, I've never stopped agonising over it. The hurdle? A prohibitive pricetag of S$160. I'm glad I held out for so long since I bought the boxset for S$95 today - a staggering 40% in savings.
Reviewing the DVDs back home, I was awashed with nostalgia on how well-crafted the plot and how lovely Karada is. I remembered again why I despise Shouko since I have a very low opinion of those who take their frustrations/anger out on hapless children. Of course Shouko did grow to become more likeable over the series - to the credit of the writers.
In other news, I discovered that the Canvas2 DVDs (going for S$189 - only 6 DVDs) were finally sold this shop. This is beyond shocking since I was certain that while a handful may have enjoyed Canvas2, NO ONE would fork out that kind of moolah for just 6 DVDs. Obviously, somewhere in this glorious island republic, there's an otaku who's a bigger (and definitely richer) fan of Canvas2.
Ah well. I've been assured they'd do a restock of Canvas2. Hopefully it'd not still be ridiculously overpriced then. Meanwhile, it's back to Karada goodness for this tanuki.

Nice series, another one of those anime adoption better than manga series.
So whatever happened to the manga story?

I had a hard time not snagging Asatte no Houkou at a convention a while back when I saw a beautiful bootleg edition. Fortunately, my anti-bootleg ethics held strong.
But it really helped that the series frigging derailed halfway through. How do you go from a poignant story about the importance of appreciating the experience of life and family to suddenly a story about fifth-grade romance? WELL, J.C. STAFF, HOW DO YOU DO IT?
(Sorry. Still bitter. It was one of my favorites of all time until it crashed and burned.)

lol, so you got this afterall! Good job on holding out until now. This is R3 right? It’s interesting how they kept the original Japanese title on the cover.

Falen: From what little I know of the manga, it’s a dark series with non-consenual sex and other perversions. I heard Amino kun was a scum in the manga. What a world of difference from the heart-warming, dramatic but sweet series that JC staff have conjured
Mac (Kyuusai): Heh I don’t hold such strong anti-bootleg sentiments but generally bootlegs have fansub quality unless it’s ripped from R2s. Still better to stick with the originally especially when prices have come down so much
I think the series got a little out of step after ep 8 with the focus drawn to Amino and Karada instead of Karada and Hiro. But in view of the desired non-siscon ending, I suppose it’d a direction they’d have to take to satisfactorily resolve the tale. Personally I’ve always when a Karada X Hiro end but this 2nd sitting with the DVDs changed my mind. Karada and Amino are a great couple. Hiro and Shouko deserve each other XDD
muhootsaver: Thanks! Yes, it’d Taiwan R3. The title’s in Chinese though on the spine of the DVDs

After my experience with Gunbuster and Diebuster, I’ll never buy anything with only Chinese subs ever again. -_-;;

Heh probably not for new shows. But for those you have seen yet not R1 licensed, you may want to consider the cheaper R3 alternative as compared to the R2s.
That’s the case for Asatte no Houkou since I’ve not illusions of the series getting a R1 treatment.

Damnit. R3? Curse your misleading paragraphs! I was on the verge of Canvas2-mania till I read further down…
Sigh…
