2008 in review – 2D expenditure
Despite the global financial turmoil in the final quarter, my overall 2D-related spendings remained healthy for 2008. Chalking up a not-so-grand total of approx S$3200, I'm glad to have reported that my budget for the year was adhered to in spite of several stray purchases. Compared to 2007, my 2008 expenditure only rose by 7% (~S$200). Considering the price increase in PVC and 2D related merchandise, I'd say 2D goods beast in me has been tamed indeed.
Of course not without Zyl and Wife-chan's help whose invaluable advice has kept me from busting my figure quota this year. Here's a breakdown of 2D-related purchases in 3 categories.
Anime DVDs
A total of 13 anime titles were acquired this year at a cost of approx S$1150. That translates to about S$88 per series or S$12 per anime DVD. Yes I bought 5 Naruto volumes for my nephew and boy are they expensive XD. Anyhow, here's the DVD list.
01) 5 cm/s
02) Ai Yori Aoshi ~Enishi
03) Asatte no houkou
04) Fullmetal Panic TSR
05) Grenadier
06) Kannazuki no Miko
07) Mahoraba
08) Nanoha As
09) Naruto Vol. 1 - 5 (up to eps 103)
10) Noir
11) Rahxephon
12) Rozen Maiden Traumend
13) Shakugan no Shana
Favourite DVD buy - Nanoha As (It's 4:3 and cost me S$150 but man I just can't stop watching)
Most regretted DVD buy - Rahxephon (Would like to get it off my hands - CHEAP. Contact me if interested.)
PVC figures
Actually I have 2 more 2008 preorders which are still not in yet (yes they have been released in Japan) but since I've not received them, they are going into my 2009 tally. This year, a modest 14 PVC figures were acquired with approx S$1150. That's about S$82 per figure, a significant increase from the S$73 average last year. Figure cost looks set increase in 2009 with the top figure on my to-get list priced at a hefty S$240 (estimated). Ah well, I'll let next year worry for itself. Here's the figures procured in 2008.
Favourite PVC purchase - Alter Louise bustier version (Tre..tre...tres bien!!)
Most regretted PVC purchase - None
Artbooks
Artbooks are what put me in the red. The numbers more than doubled from 2007 (from S$400 to S$900). Inclusive of a few stray GS and MEGAMI magazines, the count stands at 20 books/mooks.
Favourite artbook - Moonlight tea party (Tinkle is always worth the moolah)
Most regretted artbook buy - Motoyon 4%

A comparison with yesteryear shows I've actually done the impossible and cut back on DVD and figure spendings. Unfortunately my unbridled passion for 2D art undermined my PVC/DVD savings. Still it's been a well-spent year for this tanuki and he's looking forward to another fruitful year of 2D goods in 2009.
PS: Can't wait to check out Moyism and Adun's epic year in 2D goods.
Edit 30/12/08 - Adun has posted his spendings even earlier!

I’ve already posted my 2008 expenditure
That’s really surprising how your artbook spending had doubled over the course of the year, but then that is offset by the decrease in DVDs and figures. I also look forward to 2009 but I know for a fact that 2009 will be my lowest year to date as I aim for a much grander goal.

Adun: And an inspiring post it was. Very impressed by how meticulous your accounting was.
Have you set your budget for 2009? I’m gonna keep it at S$3500 and capping figures at 16.
moyism: Tears of joy, cry tears of joy and know that many are inspired AND want to be Moy (maybe more accurately WANT your anime goodies)
Either way, looking forward to your entry!

The thing that is going to *kill* me this year is the new stability point for the USD/yen exchange. Going from 120 yen/$ to 90 yen/$ is ouchers.
Lets see, typically I’ll spend:
$40/month avg. for english translated manga…
$50/month avg. for figures
$20/month avg. for japan CDs
$40/month avg. for DVD series collecting.
About 4 times a year, I’ll spend $60-$100 on japanese manga (more if shipping req’d).
Sometimes much less sometimes much more…. clumpy… (e.g. I bought the entire ARIA/AQUA manga series in one clump)
Sooooooo, about $2000 USD for this years budget. Maybe more if I get decent prices on some swag, figures, and other hobby items I’m going to ebay…
Huh, there’s probably another $500 cost hiding somewhere (occasional artbook, doujinshi, etc).

Stripey: I don’t bother setting budgets. I let the market decide upon my demand for merchandise. So it varies depending on the figures that come out or if I buy things on a whim.

Congrats on keeping your spending under control (even if it was with help!). It sure can be hard as hell to give a figure or DVD purchase enough consideration of whether it’s *really* worth the price *before* actually buying it! Blassreiter’s 1/8 Elea was a good example for me…preordered it, but then cancelled a couple weeks later after realizing I didn’t especially care (despite being a loli figure).
Volk’s Fate is a different matter…

Vexx: That’s a pretty healthy number for an all-consuming passion!
You need to share pics of your figure collection sometime!
Adun: Heh, the Japanese 2D industry is soo good at emptying my wallet that a budget is a must for me lest I sell my body part for the passion.
Ashram: THanks! Volks Fate is worthy. But it does look like I’d have to break the bank to get her XD

hmmm, actually I should photograph everything if only for insurance purposes. Perhaps after the New Year housecleaning frenzy…

Cool. I never have the patience to keep track of my spendings like that. Well, I don’t spend too much to start with. But yeah, good on you.
January 5th, 2009 - 08:57
Vexx: Or to share with the world your collection so that we may all bask in the same joy
M12: Actually I first began with the intention to track how my 2D expenditure was faring against the Japanese retail price (ie how Kinokuniya was ripping me off XD) and it then became a habit to do so
Btw I love our local Kinokuniya XD

In Singaporean dollars…? I didn’t know you’re from SG D:
