White Album – Where would it go?
There are romances where you can see the end right from the onset (Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu) and there are those that keep you guessing right up to the penultimate episode (Kiminozo). White Album is surely on the 2nd track since it's all so murky to me how the tale will pan out. 4 eps into the show, WA still maintains the flexibility of
1) Going for a main rivalry configuration (Rina-Touya-Yuki) with some side character stories. (Da Capo)
2) steadily building on the sweet Touya-Yuki romance with all the other girls as distraction. (Ai Yori Aoshi)
3) just a round-robin of heartbreaks and the girls take turns to have their hearts smashed by the cad. (School Days)
While I'm predisposed towards 1), I can't for the life of me imagine how they'd insert the noble Rina into the love triangle. Yes, there are dishonourable fissures visible on the Touya front but Rina remains such a staunch supporter of the Yuki-Touya love and it'd take a great deal to turn her treacherous. Of course it needn't necessarily be betrayal for the Rina intrusion but that route would be spicier. Anyhow, the Ogata siblings are almost certainly going to come between Yuki-Touya although their motivations are unclear as of ep 4. Would Rina do it for love, revenge (ailing fandom due to Yuki) or out of siscon (I wish!). Would Eiji break into the relationship via misunderstanding, love for Yuki or to protect his record company?
There is also the question of the remaining 4 girls who I deem to be worthy bishoujos in their own right. How are the writers going to squeeze their tales in the remaining 9 eps while juggling the main rivalry? All these unknowns are why WA fascinates me. For now, I'm rooting for a Yuki-Touya end even though Rina is, by a looong stretch, the top bishoujo in White Album.
Can't wait for ep 5 and looking forward to more of Mana too.

I wholeheartedly agree with your post. I am thinking of option number two for now but I won’t be surprised it if it ends up as number one or three. Let’s pray it doesn’t go route three path…

It’s too early to say though how you can consider the other four to be worthy is quite dumb in my view we know little of Haruka, even less of Misaki, we just met eh loli, and have yet to meet the hikkomori.
Rina is no clueless bint so far, it’s only Touya that has any deviant thoughts as the sack of shit knows nothing of loyalty or even hard work. Touya will screw himself over by chasing Rina if he gets even dumber. To suggest that Rina would be so base as to betray Yuki is galling. If Rina did not have the utmost confidence in her talent and unwavering dedication to Yuki then why not crush Yuki while Rina still has the chance?
Touya is the weakest link, he dithers and is lost in his own dreams, always with him his goddesses and his every day. Never his mind on where he was, what he was doing. Touya is unemployed, behind on his rent, and pissed off his dad with his high school antics to the point that the most he gets is a care package that Touya rudely returns on occasion. Touya is going to have a wonderfully tough time, I look forward to see him crushed mercilessly by the real world. If Yuki wishes to join him then I accept her motion, and will then look forward to the failure of her career and her feeling Touya’s crime for nine months and either a late miscarriage or a birth most painful. Such a lack of work ethic on the part of both is sickening, and abhorrent.
Yuki and Touya deserve each other I wish them a long life filled with the consequences of their foul deeds. If route three is taken that acceptable for Rina is no harlot and beyond the reach of that hateful Touya. So long as Touya and Yuki have their dreams chipped and shattered all will be well.

Minnie: Although I have to say Route 2 looks less likely since they seem to be setting up Rina and the brother as the wedge for their relationship. Ultimately I don’t mind any route as long as it’s well executed and consistent with the characters
Crusader: Woah your hatred for Yuki frightens me since she’s a nice girl with a bland taste for men. Apparently childhood love is suppose to justify her choice in men so I wouldn’t judge her still her backstory with Touya is fully revealed.
As for the rest of the haremettes, trust the Stripey instinct.
Misaki/Haruka with their tenacious crushes and care of Touya despite his attached status should be credited for steadfastness in love even if it’s a tad silly. But that’s how shoujo hearts should be respected. Our effervescent loli is some full of girlish charms that any less restrained, hot-blooded tanuki would have jumped her in the bus. Believe when I say I’m holding Dark Stripey back with all the righteous might a tanuki can muster. XD

Yeah, I have to admit I’m surprised you weren’t jumping all over the loli :p
I could certainly see #3 coming true. Touya, as Crusader said, is pretty clueless. Though I do agree Yuki and Touya deserve each other. Perhaps it’s just leftover rage boiling over from Akane Iro, but Yuki just grates my nerves every time she’s on screen.

I agree that it seems hard to imagine Rina going after Mr. Clueless. But I don’t see his faults as so terrible: I think his main feeling, from the dream at the start of ep1, is that Yuki is rising beyond him and he is losing her. Certainly Rina is a goddess, but he believes he loves Yuki.
I can see everything just gradually unravelling, as Yuki’s career gets more and more in the way, and in the last episode Touya is left alone with Haruka. That may be because I find myself liking Haruka best of all the characters, though.

Well… I suspect it will be a mixture of 1 and 3. Not knowing the original source, I’ll still stick my head out of the window some: Based on the promotional pictures, there will be 6 girls, and these are my wild guesses (feel free to record and laugh at me later):
1) Yuki: The ending match. I’d expect their relationship to become more and more strained, and then explode in the second half. Eventually a war about Touya WILL break out between Rina and Yuki, and for a while, Rina will have the upper hand. Eventually, however, I believe that Yuki has the best “chance” to end up with Touya. Too much time has been spent in the beginning showing their genuine affection for each other. This will come full circle.
2) Rina: The clear main rival. She was the one who kicked off some action to bring Touya and Rina together more, in order to help her girlfriend Yuki. She picked up on the neglect Touya was feeling, she is curious about Yuki’s BF, and she’s tickled about the attention he’s giving her (the goddess bit). I believe that once she decides to go after Touya seriously, she will succeed in overpowering Yuki for a while, who will then however show some resilience and fight back. Eventually her flirtatious and jumpy nature will be her undoing, even though I expect her to gradually fall for Touya seriously, and I expect her to gradually CHANGE – just too little and too late.
3) Haruka: Poor girl. She will continue to help Touya out in a genuine, but thankless effort. I suspect that Touya will begin to exploit her helpfulness more and more, leaning on her more and more for the daily business, and in the end, when the drama is peaking, she will snap and lash out at him, leaving him in a world of shatters. Once this happens, we know we’re close to the nadir
… so, sorry, no more than good friend, unfortunately. And maybe a stolen kiss followed by rejection.
4) Misaki: The girl that will foul up his relationship to Akira. He’ll continue to be kind, she will continue to be happy and hopeful and interested, and Akira will stand on the sidelines, seething. Probably in a crisis he will ask Misaki for help, she will give it, receive a glad and grateful reaction and misunderstand it as romantic interest. He’ll recoil, hurt Misaki in the process and contract Akira’s emnity. Like Shinji in KimiNozo, Akira will eventually become instrumental in getting back together with Yuki. And if the show is kind to him, in doing so he will be able to express his interest in Misaki and be rewarded.
5) Mana: The Akane character. She will be used by the story to slam him with the blunt club of truth. And develop some kind of imouto affection for him, but she’ll never be a serious contender. Nevertheless, if there’s someone who’s going to sort things out in Touya’s mushy head, I expect it to be her.
6) Yayoi: Yes, Yuki’s manager. I was spoiled here, so I won’t write things out. But since she is listed on the promo picture, let your imagination run wild what could cause her to become involved… hurr!

But… treachery is fun!

Nazarielle: Heh, for a character who just showed up for half an ep, she’s doing a little too well on my WA bishoujo charts. XD As for Touya, I suppose he’s just human. XD In the presence of the fabulous Rina, any XY chromosome carrier would buckle and hallucinate. XD Plus if I were in his shoes, I wouldn’t have considered Haruka as a possible romantic interest since she’s like ‘one-of-the-guys’. As for Misaki, there’s the Akira presence to cloud the picture. Misaki is surely the Ai-chan (true tears) of the show
hashi: Not to mention there’s going to be some misunderstanding by Touya over the Yuki/Eiji working relationship. I just hope they don’t overdo it to make Touya look like a jerk. For the sake of the girls he’d need to remain at least tolerable (Poor choice in men is a terrible terrible character flaw in bishoujos) XD
Mentar: MAL lists WA as 13 eps so I’d be worried if there’re as many as 6 romantic interests.
And reading your postulates make me wish you’re one of the writers for WA. Can’t wait to see Mana as the Akane of the show since Akane was far and away my fav char in Kiminozo.
Zyl: A betrayal or two would be nice to spice up the romance but not to the extent that we’ll be chanting for a NICE BOAT ending

errrrrrg, I was ignoring this series…. now I guess I have to look.
February 24th, 2009 - 02:25
And then I dropped it when the ennui went on for 5+ episodes. This is the sort of series I *should* have loved. But never once did I find myself giving the least bit of care about the characters (other than wishing the wicked little “musume” troupe would be drugged, gang-raped, and then slowly tortured to death)
Which is awful because I’m usually quite forgiving.
But nothing ever rose up and grabbed at me pleading with me to care about it. Meh, onward.

Heh at least you gave it a shot. We’ll report back when the series ends.
