Railgun euphoria :: risks of misfire, recoil, meltdown
Like Dav, I am, of course, delighted with the news that we may get our wish for a Railgun anime.
If it's true there's still always a but - particularly with respect to that old adage: Be careful what you wish for. Kurogane, rightly, sounds a cautionary note:
But god. I hope it’s not the same staff as Index…. although I have a pretty damn good feeling it will be.
Is Kuro-chan being way too pessimistic?
Afterall, as DiGiKerot points out, the structure and dynamics of Railgun are completely different from those in Index:
I guess the story of a girl who can fire coins at hypersonic speeds and her crazy, teleporting lesbian stalker room mate strikes people as being awfully more exciting than a show about a girl who knows everything about magic but can’t actually use the stuff and a guy whose power is cancelling out other people powers.
In addition, Railgun is based on a manga, a much more visually attuned medium that should translate better into anime, compared to Index which, I understand from BAD ASS LIGHT NOVEL READERS, is based on a rather exposition heavy light novel series. Even if it's the same staff, they'll be working with very different source material. At which point I was tempted to say: "What could possibly go wrong?"
But, as we all know from anime, that's the prelude to disaster. And I've been told, nay, learnt from bitter experience to never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups. There is a fair bit of exposition in Railgun around concepts such as AIM or synthesia. Understanding all this important as the key to how our heroines win their battles in Railgun comes down, especially after the first volume, less to overwhelming their opponents with their higher level power but through creative and sometimes surprising application of their respective masteries of teleportation and electro-magnetism.
Now that our prayers for Biri Biri anime appears to have been granted and that I am not yet willing to manage my expectations downwards, I will join Kurogane in beseeching the anime gods to have the better (JC)staff to produce this anime.

And then let me completely disagree with that sentiment. I love the Index anime as it is now, exposition and all. In fact, the unique concepts Index keeps pushing in the exposition is what makes it stand out so much to me. I hope to God the same team tackles Railgun in the same way they have with Index.
I mean, seriously, would you rather have the teams adapting Shana and Zero adapt Index instead?

True, the Accelerator 2 and Hyouka arcs were much better. The content of the exposition itself is ok but the way it’s delivered disrupts the pace too much; it may look fine on the written page but I was just LOL at how terrible it was e.g. during the Kaori vs. Misha ‘fight’. But if the team is as faithful to the manga as they were to the Index light novels, it may not be a bad thing. So yes, touché.
I somehow managed to enjoy Shana and Shana Second (both directed by Takashi Watanabe and series composed by Yasuko Kobayashi); ZnT 1 was ok too (directed by Yoshiaki Iwasaki, series composed by Takao Yoshiyoka) but definitely should not let the ZnT 2 and 3 team get hold of Railgun (D: Yuu Kou SC: Yuji Kawahara/Nahoko Hasegawa).
Any takers for the ToraDora! team of D: Tatsuyuki Nagai and SC: Mari Okada?

I loved the first ZnT. Loved it. Once the staff changed for season 2, it was an immediate drop off in quality. Unfortunately, it only got worse from there. As of ZnT3, the series is now dead to me. So when people start talking staff changes between seasons at JCStaff, I get a bit worried. That’s all.

Ah, ZnT 2-3 trauma. I can sympathize.

This is awesome news – what little I’ve read of the Railgun manga looked good. I’m a little worried about Team Index doing it too, since the exposition in Index put me to sleep (I’m old enough that I probably should have a longer attention span, but I don’t…) – but it’s true that a manga-based series should be less monologue-heavy. I’d be all for the Toradora team doing it, since that’s my favorite series out of what I’m watching now, in any case I’m cautiously optimistic Railgun will be great.

I’m absolutely NOT worried about it. If the Index team picks it up, NO PROBLEM.
Why?
Because what’s making Railgun so superior is that it’s a different kind of show. Its main strength are the characters, and their antics. The SD. All the action scenes are pretty short, and there is no preachy smart aleck around. Also, the plot exposition is much shorter overall. And the show doesn’t take itself so seriously.
It simply does right what Index does wrong. The main characters are capable and diverse, they’re not hardwired and totally predictable. And Touma appears in a perfect way: He doesn’t preach, but rather comes over as a relaxed and friendly-helpful guy, the perfect foil for Mikoto.
Everyone loves Biribiri. But who doesn’t love Kuroko, Uiharu, Saten and folks? All comparable scenes have been handled excellently by J.C.Staff in the Index series. Remember Mikoto’s date? I had absolutely no complaints there. So, let’s have it

LTTP, but I have to say I 100% agree with Mentar.
Oh, btw, looks like Railgun got Toradora direction and Asatte no Houkou SC.
