KyoAni does imouto right

If made-to-order imoutos are available, I'd commission KyoAni to fashion mine. Kyon's sister, Sunohara Mei and now Hirasawa Ui are powerful testaments to the studio's impeccable imouto-craft. At this moment, I need to come clean and declare that like almost every otaku on the planet (and their dollfies), Mio is my main reason for watching K-on! (Goth-punk Mio FTW!) But after ep 3, I've begun praying for a Ui-centric OVA since there's little hope of her taking centre-stage in the mother tale.

Ui (like the other KyoAni imoutos) is the kind of sister that invokes 'healthy' siscon. Do note that siscon is a much maligned word and does not equate incest. Traditionally used to describe brothers who are overly protective of their little sisters (which is, in my opinion, is not a bad thing), the word has been 'expanded' by anime to embrace romantic or increasingly sexual elements in sibling relationships. The siscon I speak of, which Ui invokes, is of course defined with the purest use of the term in the most honourable of tanuki vocabulary. In other words, Ui is the kind of sister that brings out the onii-chan in you that would make her friends mad with envy.

Barely 15, Ui is more mature in mind and womanly than many much older in flesh. Plus her love for her silly onee-chan is beyond commendable. I've always maintained that those who love/cherish their family (including annoying siblings) also make great life partners. Ui would surely be on my 'to-hit-on-list' if I ever turn 2D.

  1. Ui is turning out to be a very appealing imouto indeed. Maybe we will be seeing more of her (hopefully!). I’m sure the manga readers out there could spoil it for us ;)

  2. Aha, I see we are of like mind again. While I’m not really a Mio fan, I’m definitely a huge Ui fan. Unfortunately, I think this past episode 3 is probably the most we’ll see of her in a while, unless of course KyoAni wants to use her as part of filler/fluff, of which I would have no objections.

  3. the purest use of the term in the most honourable of tanuki vocabulary.

I recall re: Akane Suzumiya, said tanuki vocab was: A CAB IS FINE TOO. ;-)

BTW does Tsukasa falsify your hypothesis? Shiori probably fits your theory (even though I agree with Impz) but what about other younger sisters from the KEY adaptations I haven’t seen (e.g. Clannad, AIR)?

  4. Yes and this is so very indicative of Yui’s Ultimate Status as ONEE-SAMA.

  5. Well I must say I was rather negative about whole K-On thing but after countless brainwashing sessions by my good friend Flaskis I decided to give it a shot. So far Mio is the main selling point of that anime but I have to agree with you that Ui is having some serious appeal but like Nazarielle said I doubt we will see much more of her.
    @Zyl
If I recall correctly there is a younger sister in Air but I don’t recall her invoking any special response from me.
Younger sister spot in Clannad belongs to Ryou but she doesn’t stand a chance against Kyou’s “thigh buffet”.
Also something from the Clannad game:
[spoiler] After playing through Kyou/Ryou arc I can’t say Ryou invokes any protective feelings from me because her rather selfish behaviour.[spoiler]

  6. anonymous_object : We can only hope. I’m banking on the OVA (if any) XD

Nazarielle : Actually I’m not sure what to make of K-on! til now. It’s the typical idiosyncratic cute that KyoAni has been spewing for the last few season. Relaxing but nothing gripping. Chances are I’ll be waiting for the season reviews :)

Zyl: THanks for bringing up Shiori bro! How could I have left her out from this post. Clannad has Ryou and Mei whom I adore. AIR has a pink hair loli whom I can’t remember her name so yeah not very memorable for me I suppose. :)

lelangir : I see it a lot in real life too. All the good genes going to one sibling.. :P

Kain: Heh, needs more goth-punk outfits :P
