[Artbook] Code Geass Heroine Tribute

Let's face it. The best part about Code Geass R2 was the bishoujo cast. (I wouldn't make the same claim about Season 1 which I enjoyed a lot more.) Anya, Tianzi and the expanded role of Kaguya brought much joy to a certain soon to be arrested not to be named Zaku - his main consolation when the story bordered on ridiculous (Oooh, the Marianne bits - got to have some of what the SUNRISE folks were smoking.) Anyhow, here's THE definitive Code Geass bishoujo artbook that every right thinking CG fan should hug to sleep.

The artbook is mainly 2 divided into 2 segments. First the mundane. About 20 pages of character art complete with their various outfits in the anime. There's even 2 pages dedicated to the mecha appearing in the show.

The real meat of this publication is however the latter section where well-known 2D artists are invited to pay tribute (in the form of their craft) to a character in Code Geass. And in there you have big names such as Miyama Zero (my favourite illustration of the lot - bottom right below), Mikeou, Sasaki Mutsumi, Kantoku, Shintarou, POP etc lending their anointed touch to bring out an alternative flair of our otherwise familiar bishoujos.

A word of caution though. While the artbook seems thick with 94 pages, there are only 35 illustrations as the page overlooking the artist tribute is taken up by his comments/sketch. But probably because of that, this publication is reasonably priced at 2190 yen which translated to S$40 for me after a 20% discount at the local Kinokuniya - a steal indeed!

Indeed another worthy addition to my collection. Looking forward to more in the Heroine's tribute series!

  1. Well..I guess.

Now, I’m not going to deny I liked them, but I did enjoy the show for other reasons as well, regardless of what others might argue. Not as much as the first season, but more than a lot of other shows out there.

Anyway, that’s both water under the bridge and beating a dead horse.

Pretty pictures are pretty. I suppose that works too.

  2. Oh wow, those are indeed some delicious looking C.C., Anya, and Kaguya pictures (sorry, I was never really a fan of the Tianzi). I see you are really getting into these Artbooks, I hope to see more of your conquests in the future, as I really love seeing this stuff but am too lazy/wary of buying them myself. Not to mention I have no idea what I’d do with them if I did end up collecting any.

    • Glad you enjoy them! Had started more artbook posts specifically for wary folks like yourself to have a feel of the artbook before laying the moolah for them. :)

Artbooks being so costly, we need to be sure of what we’re getting.

  3. There you go confusing the Mounties again! This Zaku’s fave bishoujos: Cecile and C.C.

  4. Ach, that Anya spread is unnervingly appealing, especially with her showing non-creepy-Marianne faces for once. Scarily cute.

    • Don’t worry. That’s not the inner-Stripey in you. Anyone with good tastes would enjoy the bishoujo art in this book. Especially Miyama Zero’s rendition of Anya! I say again – My FAV in the artbook. :)

      • Eh, the Marianne shot did NOTHING for me. Not since that’s his mother, and her chest is freakishly shaped there…

Anya with an orange flan, on the other hand, is very cute – especially with Orange-kun lurking in the background with a manly apron. However, Anya’s apron is rather… well, I hope Jeremiah didn’t buy it for her, or we’re going to have to send the Mounties after him too. I’ve never seen an Apron which shows the belly like that, although with Anya’s pilot suit it was pretty much a given.

Why, oh why, wasn’t Orange-kun put in charge of designing uniforms for Emperor Lelouch’s minions? He could’ve done better than the suits they stuffed the prisoners in…

  5. Anya baking a cake…. must… resist… urges…..

  6. I wouldn’t mind having that book at all!! I love the illustrations..:)
