Kampfer is overly simple but I doubt they could have made something of "guy turns into girl to fight for mysterious magical macguffin" and make it deep and thoughtful. It is however quite fun if you don't mind the fanservice which is rather tame by today's standard in the post Queen's Blade era. Akane makes up for a lot of it for me, though the faults are easily glossed over due to the sheer amount of yuri goodness, plebian yuri goodness though it may be.
