Sora no woto 4

Come on you guys, hontou ni...

I really liked this week's theme of craftsmanship - the endless journey of mastering a skill.

I think therefore there is yuri

One of the main reasons why I am enjoying the Nanoha Vivid manga so much more than the Nanoha Force manga is mainly because of the parts that deal with Vivio's family life, i.e. the fact that she has two mothers who are *best friends* ahaha~hearts;

Oh, there it is again - the ominous hint!

I have yet to figure out the rank insignia system in the universe of Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. Everyone seems to have stars on their epaulettes even though they're not generals!

Speaking of FMAB, now I've finally realized who the Glass Meister reminds me of. Also I absolutely loved this scene when he and Noel are deep in discussion about why the latest iteration of the lens did not work. I always find it quite fascinating to listen to two people who are totally absorbed in a conversation with each other about their subject matter of expertise - partly because there's just so much talking at and talking past each other in so many other situations.

Ah yes, Arthur C Clarke's third law. Actually most daily-use technologies (mobile phones, cars, microwaves, the internets etc) are like magic to me but nothing feels magical, perhaps because there isn't a sense of wonder due to the ubiquity of the stuff, something that the scarcity of this post-apocalyptic world has made its inhabitants rediscover.

The title of Meister Noel has an Otome sort of feel to it though.

That's probably just 33% of the truth, the rest probably includes elements of loving a technical challenge because it is a pain in the ass and also because it might a good opportunity to impress the Glass Shop Lady, you tsundere you!

My unit S4 gave me a piece of advice once and I'll pass it along to you, Kanata: Practise doesn't make perfect, practice makes permanent. So practice it the right way.

Kanata's revelation. I've never played a trumpet before, only a recorder, so I haven't got the faintest clue if this scene enraged trumpeters as much as Yui's guitar level-upping enraged guitar playing anibloggers. Another thing that I would have liked to have seen addressed was the comeback from Glass Meister's condemnation of lack of talent - which I think is a perfectly valid excuse, given how I subscribe to the theory of comparative advantage. But in general, invoking lack of talent is regarded as wussy when explaining failure but it's perfectly acceptable as a reason for success, especially displays of mindbogglingly dramatic improvement/success.

Noel's revelation. No experience in glass making either but this was completely believable given all the stories I've heard of car mechanics, computer technicians and even oil rig engineers who can tell what's wrong with a particular car, PC or rig structure just by the sound the thing makes.

Noel's gohobi: Yagami Hayate momi momi. It'd be fabulous if Chanomi picks this series up for parodies.

  1. I remember the only problem I had with the Glass Meister giving Kanata the tip that helped her finally transcend suckage was that it came from him and not Rio – isn’t Rio supposed to be teaching her? Rio actually plays a brass instrument too, unlike the Glass Meister.

    I think this is very-well put and applies to modern life in general – although there are times that I really think about it and do still find technology pretty magical. Especially thinking about if I could have shown my self 30 years ago watching anime in HD on a laptop, streaming over wireless broadband – I’d probably have thought it was either magic or some kind of trick, makes you wonder what we’ll be taking for granted in 2040…

  2. Good point about Rio. I wonder if it’s because she’s a good trumpet player but not great at as a teacher.
