True tears blu ray madness
One of the techniques I use in suppressing those 2D splurging urges is to envision the many other worthier purchases I could have made if restrain was exercised. Lately I have been using this technique a lot because my insane anime passion has strayed into the realm of Japanese blu rays.
The only Japanese blu ray I own - AIR - cost me an arm, a kidney and my little pinkie. Japanese anime fans would probably say AIR blu ray for S$250 is reasonable but for a poor tanuki as myself, it was MURDER. But apparently I was willing to die for the likes of the AIR bishoujos. While it was still a worthy purchase, I had hoped the pain of the missing organs would remind me not to delve into the Japanese blu ray market for a looong loong time. Apparently, tanukis are a forgetful bunch.
When I made my pilgrimage to Akihabara back in April, 2 blu ray boxsets were on my To-get list
Sadly the few rare copies I found @ 2nd hand stores were not much cheaper than their original prices (SRP for Mai HiME BD - 24k yen ). In fact True Tears, being a limited release apparently, had appreciated significantly despite the already ludicrous price. (Selling at over 30k when it was preordered for 25k yen). I throw in the towel to return home an empty-handed and beaten rodent.
Two months later (now), I find myself deliberating over Mai HiME and True Tears blu rays again having found a slightly cheaper alternative (18.8k and 28k respectively) and here's where I apply the technique to defer from the blu ray purchases.
1 x True Tears blu ray box set =
1) 3.5 PVC figures (1/8 scaled)
2) 7.5 regular artbooks
3) 3 Toradora DVD sets (Taiwan 8 discs R3s)
4) 3 X tinkle tapestries
4) 1 month of car installment
5) 1 return airticket to Tokyo (July 2009)
6) 1 month of 2D expense
7) 1 Play station 3 console (with one free game and 1 controller)
Ouch. It's interesting that this blu ray set cost less my wife's wallet (my Xmas gift to her last year... What was I thinking???!!) XD Maybe I should give in to the Mai HiME blu ray which seems more digestible @ S$320. After all my previous car used to guzzle this amount of petrol every month too.
Still, no matter how I rationalise, calculate and re-calibrate with deeper deliberation, one immovable fact stands - Japanese blu ray prices are insane and I must be too to consider any purchases. Now if you'd excuse me, it's time for my pills.
PS: I was also told that love and insanity are very similar on many levels. Maybe I'm just driven by my love for Hiromi?

I wonder how much have you budgeted thus far based on your expenditure. I consider True Tears BD set as something I can live without — if it can remain around to be sold, that is — until I am definitely sure I have enough money to buy it.
My rule of thumb: 10% of total savings is allowed for luxury items.
Therefore, if the box-set costs ~S$500 (accounting for delivery charges and GST), you must save about S$5000 in order to accommodate the splurge.
Unless you’re maxed out of savings, I do not recommend credit card purchasing/taking out loans just to get this. Not when you’re still a Singaporean.

Wow 10% of total savings for luxury items… my wife would approve.
I think my expenditure on luxury items = my monthly savings at the moment which is NOT GOOD.
The 3 prong attack of artbooks/figures/bluray has obliterated my budget for the last few months and as of now, I have decided that that it would be better off getting US blurays – have my eye on FMA brotherhood and Full Metal Panic Season 1 + fumoffu. Getting them all would cost less than half the price of True Tears blu ray.
That said, I have VERY pleased with my Japanese Mai HiME blu ray even though it cost S$320 (all in). I think it helped a great deal that it has 3 audio tracks (Japanese, Chinese, English) and English subs. True Tears blu rays is wholly Japanese.
On about GST, for some reason, the very legitimate sellers I get from tend to under declare the value of the goods (not that I asked for it). So I haven’t got a chance to foot GST.. as yet XD

*cough* Sister Princess *cough*Don’t mind me. Wasn’t trying to remind old pains.
You’re obsessed with those Blu-ray sets. Try to delay your purchases. Even if you find a good price, give it a week to think. Just keep procrastinating—everyone aced that back in school. It’s personal experience; good luck restraining.
Oh, what happened to your plans to purchase Suzuka? I remember saying it’s worth watching, but not purchasing.

LOL! Actually I’m quite glad to be reminded… so that I would NEVER make the same mistake again XD
Thanks for your very sound advice on blu rays. I’ll hold out for as long as I’m able… hopefully we’ll get more US anime blu ray announcements soon. Keeping fingers crossed for True Tears…
