[Stripey] Kirishima Shouko is awesome

The comrade-in-anime (AKA the no. 1 Nanoha fan in Singapore) who handed me BakaTest in a thumb-drive (thanks bro!) had these parting words - "Shouko is awesome." Having just caught ep 7 (mock wedding) last evening, I want echo once more The Truth -

KIRISHIMA SHOUKO IS AWESOME

We all know that tanukis are partial to the childhood friend archetype (of which siscon imoutos are a subclass of if you hadn't realised). I have loved many MANY childhood friends (in anime) but few are in the league of Shouko whom I'd willing let burn ALL my ero-books.

Now before you dismiss this as a lame fanboy's fantastical wet-dream, let me state I love her not only for her lolicious figure with babelicious curves but for her steadfast love. It takes a great deal of emotional capital and courage to pine lovingly over someone who doesn't seem to care about your advances. In fact it's even more admirable to be able to anchor your feelings onto a single person at such a tender age where emotions are so fleeting. (This tanuki has 6 different crushes over 6 years of primary school education - not counting the less 'serious' one.) I supposed it also helped a great deal that tanuki-folk had deemed Yuuji worthy of Shouko's devotion (which actually reinforces Shouko's charms since good taste in men IS important in bishoujo-worship).

Sigh, wished I had met my wife as a childhood friend... imagine all the juvenile tasering-fun we missed out on. The more grown-up "Kneeling on durians" routine just isn't quite as intense. XD

    Funny, I just re-watched episode 7 the other day – Shouko is indeed awesome. The haunted house was probably where I laughed the hardest in the episode – “I like Himeji better than Shouko because she has bigger boobs”…classic. The only downside of Shouko is she rivals Lum at jealously/propensity to use violence, the eye-poking in the pool episode looked to be pretty painful, to say nothing of the tasering…

      Heh, my favourite was the quiz portion where Yuuji realised there was no way he could lose XD

      As for the tasering/eye-pokka, I suppose I’ve come to accept that’s how 2D bishoujos show love. :P

    Yeah, I think I’m with suguru here. I really quite like Shouko a lot, but a bit much on the eye-poking and the tasering for my taste. I think it’s made worse by the fact that Yuuji actually doesn’t generally deserve it, unlike sometimes in anime where you can sort of dismiss it as “he had that coming” (most of the Naru-punches qualify for this). But if you can kind of overlook the violent/psychotic side (I know that’s supposed to part of her “charm”…), the dynamic the two have is pretty cute. Also played out well at the end of episode 12. Yuuji plays like he’s scared for his life (oh wait, maybe he actually is? ^^; ), but there’s still no other girl for him.

      Ohhh looking forward to ep 12 then. Was thinking that was probably their mandatory one ep dedicated to side characters. Good to know they get closure too. :)

      Shouko is an interesting balance of indulgence (when it comes to ‘demands’ required of herself) and fierce jealousy (guarding her man from other distractions, be it from the healthy man in Yuuji, his unhealthy friends or other ‘healthy’ women.) But it’s all love. Much like how anime characters can fall 12 storeys and survive, a little tasering (only in anime) should rejuvenate those 2D cells. XD

    I think all the eye-poking and tasering is awesome ^^
    It’s part of who Shouko is, it fits her personality perfectly. Remove all the jealousy, eye-poking and tasering she’ll be just another Himeji which is kinda boring. With that kind of devotion combined with her looks she can tase me all day…. XD
    I hope this doesn’t make me a masochist…. =P =P

    LOL! Looks like I’ve found another comrade-in-bishoujo! :) Can I assume you’re also a fellow fan of Louise (Zero no Tsuakima)? XD

    Shouko and Louise are rather misunderstood bishoujos since many consider them violent. The truth is they’re showing affection and like you say it’s part of their tsundere charm. :)

    Happens in real-life a lot too (not actual tasering but the “you’re sooo baaadd” punches/pinches etc), it’s a clumsy way of giving you attention and that’s cute (in schools a least :P ).

      I haven’t watched Zero no Tsuakima yet, but since you say she’s another Shouko I’ll go watch now XD

      Are they classified as Tsundere though? I thought Tsundere is those character that is cold or “hostile” towards the person they love but secretly loving them, like in this case Minami. Shouko on the other hand never hides the fact that she loves (or rather claims xixixi =P) Yuuji. And furthermore her “hostility” is never used to disguise Love like in Minami case ^^

      A Tsundere never admit her love openly or publicly, e.g. Minami, Kei in Hatsukoi Limited, Yamada in B Gata H kei.

      It’s my understanding though, I’m never good with all these Japanese terms ^^ so CMIIW

    Oh I think you understand the concept/person of tsundere well enough. :) I concur with you – I wouldn’t consider Shouko tsundere. :P I compared her to Louise because both use physical violence a lot.

    Louise is bona fide tsundere and there’s a very good basis of her being so in Zero no tsukaima. ZnT is an entertaining light-hearted romance with a good measure of harem. If you enjoy a simple plot that is well executed with endearing characters, I recommend the show.

    That said, I only enjoyed Zero no Tsukaima Season 1. Season 2 and 3, they overdid the tsundere Louise resulting in relationship stagnation which doomed the series. In addition, the writing in S2 and S3 weren’t quite as focused. Just a caution in case you plan to take it all the way with the ZnT franchise. :)
