[Stripey] True tears blu ray blues ~ No money, no Hiromi

Posted by

"I can be yours..."

After months of agonising, I finally succumbed to Hiromi's mesmerising gaze and threw down S$400 for the True Tears blu ray box set. Yahoo Japan Auctions (YJA)  literally spat my measly S$400 back out as I cowered on the auctions sidelines to witness the FULL financial muscle of Japanese TT fans. The bid war escalated to over S$500 for a brand new boxset. (Other uncontested listings of the boxset are priced around S$700.)

Then, I thought, "Okay, if S$400 can't get me a brand new boxset, maybe I could snag a 2nd hand set." Sadly I lost the next 2 bids for a 2nd hand copy @ S$460 and S$480 respectively. As I sobbed and poured out my heart to Hiromi (portrait on left), I  heard her whispers through those bright clear eyes.

"You can do it, Stripey. I can be yours..."

With renewed vigor, I revised my budget upwards to S$540 and charged headlong into YJA, only to be thoroughly demolished. The lowest bid now stands @ S$555.  My spirit feels like it's gone through the meat-grinder then blender.

And so, 6 months after the True Tears blu ray boxset was released, I finally realised -

1) I don't have enough love.

2) I don't have enough money.

I'm so sorry Hiromi chan. I tried. I really REALLY tried. But S$540 is already way beyond my love/budget. I know you'd find more deserving owners than this cheapskate tanuki and I beg you to stop smothering me with that hopeful gaze.. I'M NOT WORTHY!!

I'm sorry Hiromi, Much as I want to reciprocate your mesmerising gaze, S$540 is my FINAL cap for your insanely priced blu ray boxset.

True tears blu ray madness

Posted by

One of the techniques I use in suppressing those 2D splurging urges is to envision the many other worthier purchases I could have made if restrain was exercised. Lately I have been using this technique a lot because my insane anime passion has strayed into the realm of Japanese blu rays.

The only Japanese blu ray I own - AIR - cost me an arm, a kidney and my little pinkie. Japanese anime fans would probably say AIR blu ray for S$250 is reasonable but for a poor tanuki as myself, it was MURDER. But apparently I was willing to die for the likes of the AIR bishoujos. While it was still a worthy purchase, I had hoped the pain of the missing organs would remind me not to delve into the Japanese blu ray market for a looong loong time. Apparently, tanukis are a forgetful bunch.

When I made my pilgrimage to Akihabara back in April, 2 blu ray boxsets were on my To-get list

1) Mai HiME complete

2) True tears blu ray boxset

Sadly the few rare copies I found @ 2nd hand stores were not much cheaper than their original prices (SRP  for Mai HiME BD - 24k yen ). In fact True Tears, being a limited release apparently, had appreciated significantly despite the already ludicrous price. (Selling at over 30k when it was preordered for 25k yen). I throw in the towel to return home an empty-handed and beaten rodent.

The Da Capo franchise ~ Through the lens of the secondary DVD market

Posted by

Having given up hope of ever seeing a US R1 or Taiwan R3 license for Da Capo II Second season, I sought to acquire the DCIISS dvds in my recent Tokyo trip only to discover how the tanuki's take on the Da Capo franchise mirrored local sentiments.

My hunt for anime DVDs in Akihabara typically begins with the 2nd hand mega-chain store - Traders. Their numerous outlets in the 2D mecca and wide anime DVD selection give me hope (sometimes false hope) that locating any DVD set would be a breeze. I couldn't be more wrong. The Trader stores I hit came up empty. I expanded my search to Liberty, K-Books, Mandarake, Books-off and by day 2 in Akiba, after more than 10 2nd hand DVD stores, I was starting to see a pattern.

1. It would be easier to spot Zyl in a Hinagiku cosplay than a DCIISS DVD.
2. The DC shelves are stuffed full with DCII and DCSS DVDs.

To be fair, there were some representation of the original Da Capo (Season 1) DVDs but their numbers are severely dwarfed by her DCII and DCSS successors. And as if that wasn't humiliating enough, the going price for a single DCII DVD was as low as 980 yen and the entire set for DCSS less than 6000 yen - a mere fraction of the original cost. Indeed the Japanese fans have proclaimed loud and clear their lament of DCII and DCSS through the secondary DVD market.

Full Metal Panic! TSR – From bootleg to blu-ray

Posted by

My very first copy of FMP! TSR DVD was a bootleg bought in a neighbouring country, bearing official seals assuring the authencity of the product. While mental klaxons had blared with the ridiculously LOW price, (S$15 for 2 discs), I persisted on my folly, naively putting my trust behind those governmental stickers. Turns out, those stickers were the ONLY thing genuine with those DVDs. I had bought fansubs with much worse video quality than those sitting on my hard-disk.

Funimation Box sets – True bargains or a discount in quality?

Posted by

My latest anime DVD haul was received in a mix of joy and apprehension. Joy because I could finally chuck my crappy subs but apprehension crept in when I realised SHUFFLE! was packed onto 4 discs while Soukou no Strain - 2 DVDs. Such compressions are typical of bootlegs but unheard of in legit DVDs, or so I thought. Maybe I've been too pampered by my Taiwanese R3, many of it only have 2 eps per DVD. My fears were realised when my recent Tsukihime R3 purchase (produced in 2003) has better visuals than Soukou no Strain (2007) / SHUFFLE (2005). While the comparison is not a bona fide reflection of visual quality, I could not help but attribute the poorer visual to poor ep-to-disc ratio.

This is a concern since I buy anime DVDs in part to support the industry but mainly to keep a more durable and higher quality copy of my favourite shows. Plus lately I've been eyeing Funimation's boxset releases of Kanon/AIR but am concerned about the bootleg-esque ep-to-disc ratio. 6 eps in 1 DVD is simply unacceptable for me even if it's DVD9. I also noted another discrepancy - The single volume releases for SHUFFLE! has a lower packing density since it comes with 6 DVDs instead of the 4 for the boxset. Of course that does not guarantee quality but surely the odds of it being better is increased? Is this Funimation's answer to product differentiation?

I will be getting Kanon DVDs but chances are I'll be getting individual volumes instead of the boxset. Currently going at USD7 a piece, that's not too different from the price of a disc in the boxset and yet I get a shot at possibly better visuals. Although to be honest, if I had the moolah, 2 eps per disc R3s would be the way to go. Pity their Kanon set is going for over USD180.

Hoping Bandai's Anime legends do better since I'll be snagging True Tears set come July.

Tsundere for Tsukihime?

Posted by

This purchase is no coincidence. Bought 2 days after Zyl put up my ancient review of Tsukihime, I'm certain my good comrade-in-anime revived something more insidious than just a forgotten relic of the past. Flooded by memories of the bishoujos of Tsukihime (especially the meido-twins), I found myself drawn to the R3 boxset in my favourite DVD store this afternoon, despite having seen the item countless times. It is right to say that Kohaku and Hisui compelled me.

Marathoning the series that evening, I was surprised how much I enjoy an second seating. Casting aside issue of untapped potential of the epic Tsukihime legend, I was able to immerse into the bare-bones Arcueid tale so lovingly crafted by J.C.Staff. Viewing the series as a tragic tale about love lost and found expanded my appreciation of the anime. In addition, the art direction, animation quality and music are top notched for a 2003 production. This could have helped by the excellent quality of the R3 DVDs. The 2003 production looked a lot cleaner and more crisp and my recent haul of Funimation DVDs - Soukou no Strain and SHUFFLE! Not sure if it's the ep-to-disc ratio. After all my 12 ep Tsukihime was encoded on 6 discs while Funimation's SHUFFLE!'s 24 eps came packed in 4 discs.

While I still stand by my review, it needs to be said that every word is only true in light of the source material. So, it surprises me greatly to claim now Shingetsutan Tsukihime CAN be enjoyed as a standalone entity, separated from the game source - if we only took time to appreciate the other aspects of the production besides the lean tale. But of course, a Tsukihime anime focusing on the 'Far side of the moon' would still be a dream come true since I have new-found love for Akiha. Oh how blessed is the household of Tohno with worthy bishoujos!

Had been waiting for the Kara no Kyoukai OSTs to appear on Amazon.jp for ages. I might as well have been waiting for Godot. Only recently slowpoke.jpg realized, via canta per me, that the OSTs were only available with the DVDs.

I've bought Limited Edition DVDs before but this is the first time that I wanted the extra more than the DVD itself (my favourite so far is Paradox Spiral); I really enjoy the above-mentioned (post title) track so much - it's the BGM for the kick-off for the Shiki vs Fujino battle on the bridge and it's been replaying endlessly on my Winamp.

HNSO 2008 Expenditure

Posted by

I've read Stripey and Adun's 2008 expenditure reports with great interest and have to say from the outset that I can hardly compare. Total spending was about SGD 1,250 and represented a significant fall from 2007's total of SGD 3,800.

DVDs took up about SGD 650, or almost half of total spending. The bulk of this came from RightStuf purchases of Slayers Seasons 1-3, Martian Successor Nadesico, Evangelion Platinum Collection, Lunar Legend Tsukihime, Black Heaven and MariMite Season 1 (R1) box sets. I think I've been spoiled by RightStuf's customer service so my purchase of the Evangelion 1.01 LE will be my first and last ever purchase from Play Asia. I did receive my LE DVD in the end but only after a delay of over two months and very poor communication from Play Asia. Currently, I see 122 results on Google for "Play Asia sucks" - here's result 123. About 15% of this expenditure went to buying bootleg DVDs such as the R3 Gunbuster and Diebuster DVD set and really legit-looking Malaysian fakes of Genshiken 1+2 (but not inclusive of either the Kujiun or interim OVA trios). I bought legitimate R1 DVDs of anime series after downloading them via BitTorrent because I enjoyed them so much and wanted something that was better quality. Conversely I ended up downloading anime series after buying the pirated DVDs because I enjoyed them so much and wanted something that was better quality. But I didn't feel the urge to buy legitimate R1 DVDs because I had already spent money on them...

Asatte no houkou DVDs – Getto!

Posted by

Since the Asatte no Houkou DVD boxset appeared at my favourite anime DVD shop about a year ago, I've never stopped agonising over it. The hurdle? A prohibitive pricetag of S$160. I'm glad I held out for so long since I bought the boxset for S$95 today - a staggering 40% in savings.

Reviewing the DVDs back home, I was awashed with nostalgia on how well-crafted the plot and how lovely Karada is. I remembered again why I despise Shouko since I have a very low opinion of those who take their frustrations/anger out on hapless children. Of course Shouko did grow to become more likeable over the series - to the credit of the writers.

In other news, I discovered that the Canvas2 DVDs (going for S$189 - only 6 DVDs) were finally sold this shop. This is beyond shocking since I was certain that while a handful may have enjoyed Canvas2, NO ONE would fork out that kind of moolah for just 6 DVDs. Obviously, somewhere in this glorious island republic, there's an otaku who's a bigger (and definitely richer) fan of Canvas2.

It's only love (for Rei)

Posted by

One of my earliest posts grumbled about how blatantly the Evangelion cash cow has been milked long after the series first aired. And grumbles more about how I'm such a sucker, falling for it all the time and even after all this time. When Rebuild was announced, I was saying to myself: Never again!

But, lo and behold, after fapping to watching Evangelion 1.01, I also ordered the Limited Edition, following the fine example of fellow bloggers like Kurogane and double. At least he got Misato. I've just gotten some random explosion, after a long wait because Play Asia only shipped in July and I only collected from the delivery address in late September. :(

The burst of nostalgia even motivated me (with added push of RightStuf sales prices) to buy the DVD Platinum Complete Collection. orz

But, of course, the real reason is seeing, but also just as importantly, hearing Rei again.
