[Stripey] 2D Life-goal #05 – I want to make an anime music video
After 3 rounds of retrenchment and a pay cut at my company last year, I've learnt to be thankful/grateful to remain 'gainfully' employed for the sake of my livelihood/2D expenses. But that doesn't stop me from fantasizing about the good times 'good' use of time if I were to be put in-between jobs. In fact, I had it all thought out. Besides, brushing up on culinary skills, becoming a trimmer tanuki and catching up on backlog anime/reading, I would devote also a substantial amount of time/effort into making my first anime music video (AMV), featuring Shirakawa Kotori.
Of course the footages would have to come from DCSS and Kotori's very own insert song 'Andante' in DCSS would be used for the AMV. (Incidentally, I've always thought that many AMVs lose their inherent flavour/charm when non-Japanese songs are used. That's just me of course. Oh, I also heartily support the use of music from the related-series's very own OSTs - lends a certain consistency to the MV.)
The long road to Suzumiya Haruhi no Gensou
All anime roads take me home / to the place, where I belong / Evangelion, Ayanami Rei / Take me, anime roads~ I vaguely remember that how hearing Bach's Air on a String, Pachelbel's Canon in D, Dvorak's Cello Concerto in B minor on the Evangelion OSTs (particularly Death and Rebirth) sparked a mini-classical music boom, as evidenced by the purchases of cello-centric CDs on the left column.
Watching Nodame Cantabile has re-ignited that interest, causing me to dig out all my classical music CDs from the aforementioned era. In general, anime fandom - especially when characterized as otaku - tends to focus on obsession with anime to the exclusion of everything else (including other stuff at the base of Maslow's hierarchy), for me, in the course of anime, I've listened to more classical music than I otherwise would have if I had not watched anime. Likewise, learning the basics of photography because of an interest in figurine photography (okay, inheriting a Nikon D200 with 18/200 VR lens was the biggest spur though). Or read a Chinese weiqi beginner's manual from cover to cover, even though I hate reading in Chinese, because of Hikaru no Go. Or to take a basic course in Japanese language over a lazy but definitely finite and not repeated undergraduate summer. All in all, being an anime fan has enriched my life in some unexpected ways; would love to hear from readers about your experiences in this respect too.
Anime BGMs :: Non-Mio headphone test drive
I'm still learning to get the best out of my recently acquired ATH-ANC7. For starters, turning on noise cancelling for a fuller sound, regardless of background noise, bears out a common theme in the reviews. Also an excuse to post about the medley of favourite anime BGM tracks which I used for the headphone test drive as well as an aural pick-me-up. I have even less musical knowledge compared to dear sweet slothy Yui so corrections and level-ups will be much appreciated.
Ginme no Majo (Masanori Takumi | Claymore)
This background music track always reminds me Galatea's deliciously wicked musing as she walked off into the darkness of the forest towards the end of Ep 11. And also when Riful intervened against Jean's attempt coup de grace against Duff.
The dramatic drum beats right at the start are a great hook, thereafter the strings carried me to the embarking on a new adventure, announced by a triumphant brass section. The stirrings of mystery and conspiracy are heralded by piano keys against a background of bass notes and eerie synthetic animal-like calls. The various sounds come together, moving in and out, building into a crescendo that made such a great background to the above-mentioned scenes.
M19+20
Had been waiting for the Kara no Kyoukai OSTs to appear on Amazon.jp for ages. I might as well have been waiting for Godot. Only recently slowpoke.jpg realized, via canta per me, that the OSTs were only available with the DVDs.
I've bought Limited Edition DVDs before but this is the first time that I wanted the extra more than the DVD itself (my favourite so far is Paradox Spiral); I really enjoy the above-mentioned (post title) track so much - it's the BGM for the kick-off for the Shiki vs Fujino battle on the bridge and it's been replaying endlessly on my Winamp.
HATED BY HINAGIKU

It's not without a certain amount of irony that the comment for a HiNA torrent reads
If you're her fans and not getting it YOU WILL BE HATED BY HINAGIKU.?
Wouldn't one be hated more if I was 'getting' HiNA via BitTorrent, liked it a lot but did not buy the CD rather than a self-professed who didn't download it or downloaded it, listened to it, didn't like and then deleted it?
Sing till the dawn

I was LOL when Yuki took out the kiddie electronic keyboard with microphone. And when she started belting out 'Paradise Lost' against the simplified tune, I just lost it. Great seiyuu in-joke. And that Ga-Rei Zero OP song was my second favourite thing from the series. Other songs I'd love to hear on the Yuki Minfong Ho repetorie would be Junpaku Sanctuary, mokutt minami growing (LOL) and, of course, Yuki, Muon, Madobe nite. Suggestions for duet with Achakura?
But I was still surprised that a song from an anime by another studio (in this case, AIC Spirits & asread). Yeah I know KyoAni did that too for the Lucky Star EDs with the closed karaoke room door but I don't think those were recent anime. Paradise Lost was comparatively much more recent. Other animes, like Hayate no Gotoku, seem to take great pains only to sample its own music - minimize royalty payouts and maximize pimpage of own stuff?
The music of D.C.if (Da Capo if) – The magic restored
Inspired by the numerous comparisons of D.C.if's end scene to a similar one in DCIISS, I revisited Oto-nee goodness in DCIISS 12. It was TERRIFIC. I remember again why I had betrayed my imouto-roots to band behind Otome. I remember why I'll be getting the DCIISS DVDs. But I also remembered that DCIISS, though excellent by the franchise standards, just did not have the emotional impact of the original Da Capo. The key missing ingredient? A fitting soundtrack.
D.C.if, on the other hand, retained the magic because they used the original D.C. score. ZEXCS must have a tanuki's mind since they weaved almost all my favourite D.C. bgm into the OVA. Here's sharing 5 reasons why the OVA is so outstanding.
Because it wasn't 'Fly Me To The Moon'

Other than fapping a lot, I also remembered enjoying the Evangelion 1:01 ED a lot. 'Wow! Was this sung by one of the seiyuu?' Rather, Studio Khara had got the Beautiful World track off Utada Hikaru's Heart Station album. This has been a strange return to Hikki fandom for me...
Power of Flower

The powerful flower refers, of course, to Hinagiku which apparently means daisy (en). IIRC I first heard this chara song in the anime when Hinagiku debutted in her Revolutionary Girl Utena cosplay. This single was on sale back in August last year when I was visiting Tokyo on the occasion of Comiket 72 but I hadn't fallen under the spell of Hinagiku yet. Though I downloaded it a few months ago, it's nice to have the chara CD in my physical possession. And, well, better late than never. Ahaha~♥
