Possibly one of the least disturbing images to bear the caption "Stripey with Child"

Part Two of my selected C80 cosplay photographs; the first installment was posted over at Sea Slugs!

DOUBLE-BERETTA-FANG-TAN. Yappari the only way to crush a blogging backlog is Blitz Rush!

Ep 22: Revy and Gin take on Chaka and his goons head-on. Rock liberates Yukio with cleaning fluid and a bowling pin. With Revy's help, Chaka's gang is easily disposed of. However, Yukio denounces Rock for speaking his homelies while still staying in the twilight. Rock sees another girl claimed by darkness, just like Revy.

Gosh, after rewatching this episode I'm starting to think that it's not going to be bullets that'll get Balalaika in the end but the cigars. Even Castro had to give up the habit.

Hontou Ni anime skirmishes 2006

Stripey and I often have quite different anime diets, it's not unusual for one to have never seen a series that the other considers a favourite. But as we like to discuss anime, over bowls of minced pork noodles or ramen when I'm back in Singapore or via Skype when I'm not, there are constant battles to influence each other to watch this or that anime series. 2006 has been no exception. Looking back, it seems that Stripey patiently practises an attritional strategy while I prefer to strike hard at his weakest points to secure swift and decisive victory.

Rock and Revy are in Japan. Rock is interpretor (?? ????) for Balalaika's meeting with a yakuza group. Not entirely sure why Revy has come along too. Not for her skills as a gunman as she's unarmed and Balalaika has sufficient protection of her own. Rock also has to act as guide and interpretor for her too. But I'm not complaining - never thought I'd see her in a skirt!

We begin with a Rock monologue about how Roanapur is filled with villians [?? (????)], a metropolis/capital of wickedness [???? (????????)] against the backdrop of the various mafiosi going about their business. There's something quite funny and reassuring about Revy's perpetual scowling.

Rock is waiting in the company car with Revy and Eda.

Mainly a set-up episode. Greenback Jane is threatened by her employers to come up with better counterfeit USD [ISO 4217]. The boss demonstrates his impatience by killing her assistant. Later she escapes and, being totally unfamiliar with Roanapur, seeks refuge at the Church of Violence. Not knowing the town and spurning his guide's advice, the boss - with the impropable name of Elvis - starts a gun battle that he has scurry away from. Jane explains the situation to Revy, Sisters Yolunda, Eda and Brother Rico; she leaves at the end. Elvis hires a cowboy to track her down and he gathers a motley crew of the Roanarpur underworld including Shen Ho (from the Guerillas in the Jungle arc) and an undertaker in the style of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Note on the poster. What Revy said, way back in Ep 3, about her childhood was: "??????????" In a literal sense, "it's not an interesting thing to talk about" but, in this context, she's indicating she doesn't want to talk about it. The Shinsen subtitle is just sooo brilliant though - official fansubs simply can't cut to the chase like that.

And a meta note before the episode summary. I've tended to believe that one should learn Japanese to watch anime rather than the other way round. Learning Japanese from anime can ingrain bad habits, such as use of informal speech in formal contexts e.g. addressing your teacher as "kisama" or "omae". Much unnecessary social embarrassment can also result from, sometimes unconscious, emulation of favourite characters' speech patterns e.g. speaking about yourself in the third person with "-chan" honorific.

Nonetheless, I've found watching raws to be a good test of listening comprehension. Besides trying to understand the gist of the conversation, I also try to remember how some of the kanji is written for those words that I already know the meaning of. For words I don't understand, I try to tease out their phonetics correctly and then deduce their dictionary form. When the subs come out, I then can check my translation notes in the blog post. Most importantly, the raws are the proverbial kick up the arse every week - they remind me how poor my grasp of the language actually is and that I need to study the language harder. orz
