[Zyl] Anime Festival Asia 2011 Day 1 & 2 Impressions

Posted by

I walked around the commercial booths, I had pasta and coffee at the Moe Moe Kyun meido cafe, I attended the Chiwa Saito and AnoHana panels and, of course, the I Love Anisong concerts. Let's start with quick impressions of the latter. All the concerts were well attended by paying ticketholders - unlike last year when a large amount of unsold tickets were given out at the last minute to fill the venue space (this is based on hearsay but I heard it from two unrelated parties and I regard both as reliable).

MikuPa had the best turnout, the Main Stage (Suntec Exhibition Hall 402) was full and even invited AFA guests and artistes who had not bought tickets had to stand on the far left side of the hall which had seats A-Z and 1-45 (1,170 total). Assuming half of the "VIP" tickets (reserved seating) concert-goers bought only MikuPa (I Love Anisong Day One Only) tickets at SGD 148 and the other half bought Three Day packages which would cost SGD 125 for the first day, then a guesstimate of revenue generated by Vocaloid fans would amount to SGD 159,705. Assuming an equal number of standing tickets at SGD 48 each (sub-total of SGD 56,160), Miku, Rin & Len and Ruka, as well as their live band raked in SGD 215,865 (USD 167,068). Not bad for 100 minutes' work. And also quite respectable when compared to how the concert revenues of nine acts SeaA, Aniki, LiSA, FLOW, Kanako Ito + Chiyomaru Shikura, Milky Holmes, angela, Kalafina, and May'N, (using similar assumptions except seating was reduced from A-S) amounted to SGD 35,055 per act. The equal weight assigned to all nine acts is grossly unfair as it was clear that some acts pulled in way more tickets than others but this calculation usefully dramatizes the pulling power of Hatsune Miku and her brethen.

[Zyl] Hatsune Miku Live In Sapporo 2011 Screening

Posted by

"So... we're here to watch other people watch Miku?" wisecracked someone in the audience as the screening of the pre-recorded MikuPa Sapporo Live this year began. Golden Village had billed this as "Hatsune Miku Live Party 2011" (see photo of billboard) and had distributed light sticks but, aside from us, there was nothing "live" about the event.

This did not stop the audience from enjoying themselves to the fullest. As the concert screening went on, more and more attendees started applauding after songs and appearances by their favourite Vocaloids, gasping with pleasure when recognizing the opening strains of a favourite song, going "Ooooh" and "Aaaaaah" at various costume changes and special effects, calling out "Miku saikou!" (I wanted to heckle back "She can't hear you!" but would have really screwed with my own mind too much) and, of course, waving light sticks in tandem with the Sapporo audience.

I thought it was well worth the time and money because of the big screen, sound system and, most importantly, the atmosphere generated by having over 120 Miku fans together in the same venue; my favourite performance was Megurine Luka's RIP=Release; somehow it felt grander, more melancholic in terms of her singing and the languid dancing than what I saw on the 39's Giving Day BD.

[Zyl] Shizuka Itou at STGCC 2011

Posted by

As per normal, no photo-taking/video recording were allowed the moment she came on stage

It's been more than a month since I went to STGCC for the express purpose of seeing/hearing Shizuka Itou live and now I finally have some time to do a quick write up of the experience. First, I owe many thanks to SaiNano for getting me into the VIP area; we were literally just within single digit metres of the main stage.

Going for live events can be risky for one's fandom. When you normally experience the product of a performer, it's usually been gone over, prior to consumer release, by production staff with all their technical wizardry to make a product that could be quite different from what a live performance or appearance can deliver. I'm glad to say that I've come away from this encounter as an even bigger fan of Shizu-sama.

The first surprise was how pretty she was in real life. Her publicity shot for this event and even the cover photo of her mini-album, Devotion, seems to over-emphasize the oblong longness of her face. Maybe it was her bright smile. Or maybe it was her blue yukata with yellow flower prints. Or maybe her solid voice performances. In any case she came across, right from the moment she walked on stage, as a performer with quite a lot of charisma and stage presence.

[Zyl] London MCM Expo 2011

Posted by

Bank Holiday Weekend Warrior

I don't play computer or console games; I haven't read comics since Lucifer ended its run in 2007; I don't watch Hollywood movies unless I'm taking a long haul flight (and I've already seen all the anime and Chinese movies in the inflight entertainment system). So, given the impression of the general lack of anime-related attractions on the London MCM Expo 2011 website's featured events, I wasn't so sure if it would have been worth my while to attend.

However the chatter on Twitter indicated that some of the UK-based anibloggers that I follow were looking forward to this; Hanners, 5scamp and Hana were all travelling to London from other parts of the UK to attend the Expo. Since I'm already in London and getting to the venue was a matter of negotiating the London Underground and Docklands Light Rail (note to self: don't take the DLR to ExCeL from Bank - it was much easier for me to get on the DLR at Canning Town), my initial reluctance turned into: "Why not?"

This was my first time attending a UK convention so I was also curious how this would compare to my experiences in the US (Otakon 2000), Japan (Yuricon 2005, C72, C77) and Singapore (AFA08, AFA09). First off, while I did not encounter any long queue times, I was initially surprised by how admissions were controlled by having a numbered wristband (top-right of the photo) attached to you. The stewards in the ticketing queue stressed repeatedly that if it was removed or damaged in any way, we would have to pay the full admissions price again. Showering a tad awkward as getting it wet was not recommended and the stickiness of perspiration between the wristband and skin made for occasional discomfort. Comiket did not charge attendees so there was no such issue. IIRC all the other conventions I attended before issued passes (hung around one's neck). The Expo's organizers probably wanted to prevent transfers though I'm not sure how much revenue loss this measure actually prevented. I witnessed an instance of distress from an attendee who arrived in cosplay with long gloves but a compromise was eventually arrived at with the wristband being attached loosely enough for her to be able to remove her glove but not the wristband. It was an incident like that (and, as a wit remarked in a Tweet, an excuse for some not to shower) that I hope the organizers will consider switching to a pass system in the future.
