Dear Ami I would like to

Somehow it's actually more disturbing to learn that I have something very much in common with Shin than to realize that I am, actually, quite partial to traps.

Saying, saving and falling from grace

Calawain and Crusader at THAT as well as Minnie and Steve of Hey Say Anime as well as Matteas of Anime Raku gave the thumbs up, overall, for Maria+Holic but, like Totali, I was disappointed.

Strikingly the complaints from Rabbit Poets and Baka Raptor are quite similar. From the former: (1) Not enough Mariya. Too much Kanako. (2) Beating a dead horse. And from the latter: (1) Punchline overkill. (2) Kanako isn't a lesbian.

And all THAT, whatsoever ye shall ask in post, blogging, ye shall receive*

So asked Crusader in his Adoration of Kanako IX (Ep 10):

I so want a gif of this scene. Kanako is indeed tall.

The Urticaria of Miyamae Kanako

Between Kabitzin's current tagline 'Tentacles Are Hypoallergenic' and rewatching Mariya pecking Kanako on the cheek (BGM was lovely, no?), I've been thinking about the issue of Kanako's hives. Initially I leaned towards the psychosomatic (rather than psychological) explanation but then dismissed it as overthinking a dumb plot device, like some of the commenters over at Sea Slugs! But I've arrived at the view that pinning down the cause could majorly influence how the series concludes.

the border of normality

In Ep 9, Kanako defends herself against charges of perversity:

Whether you actually carry out your delusions or not is the crucial difference between being a pervert and remaining a normal human. You don't touch her, you only use the hand in your heart to bust check her! You don't secretly film her, you just burn her image into the film in your head! I'm just a harmless, normal person! These are mere dreams!

The talent of Aya Hirano

Posted by

I'm not a fan of Aya Hirano. While I think she's talented, I'm just not swept away by her voice acting the way I am by, say, Shizu-sama or Maaya Sakamoto. That said, I have enjoyed her work as Haruhi Suzumiya (megalomania ♥) and Shizu Shidou (Ijimekko~~) but, to date, my Top Favourite Aya Hirano role has to be Konata where she really made the role her own, conveying the chara's distinctive blend of otaku passion, family/friendship love power and :3

Aya-hatred will be proof of her talent if she continues to grow and prosper in spite/because of it. Another Ogiue lesson is applicable in Aaya's case methinks:

Real talent doesn't admit defeat after one little beating. If she truly does have talent, then the talent will show itself no matter how many beatings she takes. She's gotta be ready to be hated, beaten down, crushed and forgotten.

The moral of Chiaki's Tanuki Story

Posted by

is that you can get away with anything if you're cute. Such as BEING FRIENDLY with lolis. Chiaki's tanuki story was a great rejoinder to Kana's tanuki story; I also love it because it just fuels the mystery of whether Chiaki knows about Mako-chan's real identity - personally I'm leaning towards the school of thought that says she knows but ignoring it simply because the status quo is such great fun.

Never mind the bollocks

All my bandwidth were belong to Kara no Kyoukai 5. Everything else went to the back of the queue over the six days (not including office hours since I use my personal laptop at work) the TYPE MOON/ufotable goodness dripped down the pipe through a really crap connection. How I envy Adun for having seen it on the big screen!

There's so much about it that I want to gush about but, at this point, I'd just like to respond to the query from Evirus about how I felt about Maaya Sakamoto voicing both Shikis.

Trap, Reverse Trap and Yuri Trap

Posted by

I was ambivalent about picking up Maria+Holic but Kabitzin's animated gifs were just too enticing. The main hook, for me, was the contrast between Mariya's sweet facade and his grin o' evil mischief in the second gif. Totali was nearly trapped too. LOL

My initial reluctance originated along the lines of: 'Oh dear, an OtoBoku clone?' But that was just me being lazy. OtoBoku has the protagonist as the cross-dresser, he collects his harem who are in on his secret. Yuri anime this was not. Except for the brief period when Takako realized she was falling for Mizuho but hadn't found out that she was a he yet.
