The long road to Suzumiya Haruhi no Gensou

Posted by

All anime roads take me home / to the place, where I belong / Evangelion, Ayanami Rei / Take me, anime roads~ I vaguely remember that how hearing Bach's Air on a String, Pachelbel's Canon in D, Dvorak's Cello Concerto in B minor on the Evangelion OSTs (particularly Death and Rebirth) sparked a mini-classical music boom, as evidenced by the purchases of cello-centric CDs on the left column.

Watching Nodame Cantabile has re-ignited that interest, causing me to dig out all my classical music CDs from the aforementioned era. In general, anime fandom - especially when characterized as otaku - tends to focus on obsession with anime to the exclusion of everything else (including other stuff at the base of Maslow's hierarchy), for me, in the course of anime, I've listened to more classical music than I otherwise would have if I had not watched anime. Likewise, learning the basics of photography because of an interest in figurine photography (okay, inheriting a Nikon D200 with 18/200 VR lens was the biggest spur though). Or read a Chinese weiqi beginner's manual from cover to cover, even though I hate reading in Chinese, because of Hikaru no Go. Or to take a basic course in Japanese language over a lazy but definitely finite and not repeated undergraduate summer. All in all, being an anime fan has enriched my life in some unexpected ways; would love to hear from readers about your experiences in this respect too.

LOL at the unprintable expletives used by the kare of KKnM, who is not above the occasional rant, when we discussed this series last Saturday. At least he appreciated the different swimsuits, yukata and other outfits. ~Always look on the bright side of life~ Or Yuki.

Yes, it'd be nice if things can move on. But to those who are crying bloody murder, Mr T will retort on my behalf LOL; good grief, for most of us, this is free entertainment. And, guess what, KyoAni and Kadokawa will do whatever they want to do as long as they think their Japanese customers will continue to fork out the dough for it.

Endless Eight III

I'm much less with RP when he lamented about how he was:

sitting through an episode in which absolutely nothing new occurred

and much more with DKellis being

endlessly surprised by the distinct variations on the same theme. The staff of Kyoto Animation definitely have more imagination than I do.

Mostly because of how each episode is animated differently but mostly because how history repeats itself first as farce and then as tragedy for Yuki.

The Boredom of Nagato Yuki

Those of us who have already been spoiled via the light novel translations were probably smiling wryly to ourselves last week. But I do wonder if the feeling of realization by the unspoilt, back-pedalling on cries of filler WRT the previous episode, would have been sweeter; I still remember my surprised delight, after the 'WTF is this?' reaction to The Adventures of Mikuru. Though KyoAni probably expects that its primary audience has already been already spoilt rotten - as one of those, I have really enjoyed the execution of the contrast over a three episode arc thus far.

Somehow when I post about something really late, I usually feel somewhat obliged to do the lit review - an abhorrence of repetition? Which we have yet to see wrt the Endless part of this episode as noted by Metanorn, toonleap and Onibaku while Omni regrets spoiling himself.

More light novels, less 4-komas/KEY for KyoAni

At least that's the knee-jerk conclusion I came to after completing a thoroughly immersing Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody (Haruhi 2). Not my full sentiments but they underscore some KEY reasons (pun intended) why the last KyoAni production I enjoyed was Kanon (back in 2006).

KyoAni has helmed these productions since Kanon. Clannad, Clannad After Story, Lucky Star, Munto and K-On!. It took me one year after Clannad ended to complete the series (forcibly I may add) and I discontinued AS after Mei goodness in ep 3. The best thing about the franchise to date was the Alternate retelling of Tomoyo's tale in ep 24. I blame Clannad's failure to engage on the source material. Despite KyoAni's polished delivery of endearing characters and comic moments, the Clannad tale just felt too filmsy and diffused to carry the supposedly poignant moments. Clannad was cute, moetastic and funny at times but overall a rather forgettable experience.

I was LOL when Yuki took out the kiddie electronic keyboard with microphone. And when she started belting out 'Paradise Lost' against the simplified tune, I just lost it. Great seiyuu in-joke. And that Ga-Rei Zero OP song was my second favourite thing from the series. Other songs I'd love to hear on the Yuki Minfong Ho repetorie would be Junpaku Sanctuary, mokutt minami growing (LOL) and, of course, Yuki, Muon, Madobe nite. Suggestions for duet with Achakura?

But I was still surprised that a song from an anime by another studio (in this case, AIC Spirits & asread). Yeah I know KyoAni did that too for the Lucky Star EDs with the closed karaoke room door but I don't think those were recent anime. Paradise Lost was comparatively much more recent. Other animes, like Hayate no Gotoku, seem to take great pains only to sample its own music - minimize royalty payouts and maximize pimpage of own stuff?

Achakura comes to those who wait

Nyoron Churuya was pretty funny in 4koma form but it hasn't translated well into anime. But a new challenger has finally arrived! For me, Mini-Ryoko is the best thing about the Haruhi-chan series.

P.S. Belated comment on the long wait for Haruhi Season 2: Good things come to those who wait. Verily I sayeth unto you that Guinness is proof of evolution; much in the manner of how Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.

P.P.S. Does anyone know what triggered Ryoko's Yuki flag in Disappearance?
