Addicted to Yahoo Japan Auctions

Posted by

When I first stumbled upon Icie's review of Tinkle's 2nd artbook, I was in despair. As it wasn't a commercial release, obtaining it would be near impossible for a mere tanuki. Or so I thought until my search led me to Yahoo Japan Auctions. The artbooks were there, getting auctioned at half the price I got Tinkle's first artbook for. Mustering all my interweb resources, I tracked down and subscribed to a popular deputy service to join the bid wars. Hence began my descent into the world of unlimited 2D merchandise that is YJA.

Just under a week since my foray into YJA, I've already splurged USD220 on purchases. The spoils -

2 X Tinkle's 2nd Artbook

1 x Goodsmile's 1/8 Akihime Sumomo (special figure release with game)

It worries me a great deal since I'm trawling YJA daily in search of more rare items to buy (Goodsmile's 1/8 Nemu figure being top on my list.) It's taking ALL my willpower not to purchase a third Tinkle artbook. Plus, I'm not sure how long it'd be before I succumb to the array of fabulous Feena merchandise. The only thing that's keeping me from going on a rabid bidding spree is the deputy's service. They do a great job but their fee, though not unreasonable, does make you think twice about getting that YJA item. To this date, USD44 of my 220 purchase goes to their service (a good 20%).

Ah well, at least I got the Holy grail of artbooks and a fairly rare figure. Hoping to find the Nemu figure some time. Now if you'd excuse me, I have some auctions to browse.

HNSO 2008 Expenditure

Posted by

I've read Stripey and Adun's 2008 expenditure reports with great interest and have to say from the outset that I can hardly compare. Total spending was about SGD 1,250 and represented a significant fall from 2007's total of SGD 3,800.

DVDs took up about SGD 650, or almost half of total spending. The bulk of this came from RightStuf purchases of Slayers Seasons 1-3, Martian Successor Nadesico, Evangelion Platinum Collection, Lunar Legend Tsukihime, Black Heaven and MariMite Season 1 (R1) box sets. I think I've been spoiled by RightStuf's customer service so my purchase of the Evangelion 1.01 LE will be my first and last ever purchase from Play Asia. I did receive my LE DVD in the end but only after a delay of over two months and very poor communication from Play Asia. Currently, I see 122 results on Google for "Play Asia sucks" - here's result 123. About 15% of this expenditure went to buying bootleg DVDs such as the R3 Gunbuster and Diebuster DVD set and really legit-looking Malaysian fakes of Genshiken 1+2 (but not inclusive of either the Kujiun or interim OVA trios). I bought legitimate R1 DVDs of anime series after downloading them via BitTorrent because I enjoyed them so much and wanted something that was better quality. Conversely I ended up downloading anime series after buying the pirated DVDs because I enjoyed them so much and wanted something that was better quality. But I didn't feel the urge to buy legitimate R1 DVDs because I had already spent money on them...

2008 in review – 2D expenditure

Posted by

Tinker need to release a new artbook Despite the global financial turmoil in the final quarter, my overall 2D-related spendings remained healthy for 2008. Chalking up a not-so-grand total of approx S$3200, I'm glad to have reported that my budget for the year was adhered to in spite of several stray purchases. Compared to 2007, my 2008 expenditure only rose by 7% (~S$200). Considering the price increase in PVC and 2D related merchandise, I'd say 2D goods beast in me has been tamed indeed. :P Of course not without Zyl and Wife-chan's help whose invaluable advice has kept me from busting my figure quota this year. Here's a breakdown of 2D-related purchases in 3 categories.

Anime DVDs

A total of 13 anime titles were acquired this year at a cost of approx S$1150. That translates to about S$88 per series or S$12 per anime DVD. Yes I bought 5 Naruto volumes for my nephew and boy are they expensive XD. Anyhow, here's the DVD list.

In consideration – 5 DVD boxsets from TheRightStuf

Posted by

Save for the Shuffle! DVD bundle, TheRightStuf 12 days of xmas sale was a rather disappointing affair for me. The only other item that mildly tempting was the DNAngel Boxset offered on the 13th day but since it was not on my to-get list, I hardened my heart against acquiring it. Then came TRS's year-end clearance sale. Resolving to get some bargains out of this promotion, I dug deeper into the site to discover 5 potential purchases.

Shuffle DVD boxset - To be released in late March, the boxset is the reason I didn't buy the xmas bundle. Personally, SHUFFLE! hasn't been a very consistent series for me. The Shia and Nerine parts fell flat with me so I'm essentially getting the series for the Kaede/Asa/Primula bits which more than justifies the price.

Soukou no Strain DVD boxset - Given the new R1 title, I almost missed out on this boxset. Another series which could have ended so much better if the motivations for Ralph's betrayal were better conceived. Still the series was a great ride with some hair-raising moments.

KKnM blog – The adventures of Keith and Sharon

Posted by

Huzzah! KKnM (Kareshi Kanojo no Mise) finally gets the blog treatment! Offering quirky anecdotes chronicling their adventures (or sometimes misadventures) in anime merchandise acquisition, KKnM blog is a must-read for any self-respecting Sg-otaku. Since KKnM has been and will always be my first source in anime goods, this would serve as a great portal of insight into their sweat/laughs in anime merchandising. Maybe they'd even reveal what they did with my kidney (my mode of payment for Alter Hayate) in one of the entries. XD

Looking forward to more insider stories from Keith and Sharon.

Why I collect 2D merchandise (Part 2) – Artbooks

Posted by

Continuing from Part 1, here more lame justifications confessions why I collect 2D goodies.

2D Artbooks

While many boast of their art collection in terabytes, I look up to the folks who do so in tonnage. (Ok maybe realistically in kilograms.) Like Zyl, who also understand the pleasure of possessing the physical copy of a beautiful illustration, I revel in the joy of actually thumbing through an artbook. No muted digi-bytes or scan artifacts. Just pure artistic glory in its unadulterated form.

It all began with an innocent gift from Zyl - a freebie which he almost threw away in Japan. The fantabulously gorgeous K-Book playing deck. Featuring artworks from only the best of the best in Japanese moe-illustration, it opened my 2D sight/mind, surging me forth, like a tanuki hell-bent on siscon to acquire the most beautiful 2D illustrations Japan has to offer. Just over a year, I have a small but deeply loved artbook collection.

Personally I prefer commercial releases as opposed to doujins since they are more value for money - featuring more for less. I'd advise against anthological collections like Girls! girls! girls! since chances are you'd only like a portion of the artwork by the same few artists. Do your research and go straight for the fabled master's collection itself. As a bishoujo enthusiast, I'd say Tinkle, Mikeou, Suzuhira Hiro and Goto-P's works are good starting points.

PVCs up next.

Why I collect 2D merchandise (Part 1) – Anime DVDs

Posted by

Brethen-in-bishoujo, Adun's candid post on losing/recovering his 2D mojo struck a deep cord with me. While our experiences and expenditures do not directly correlate (woah, not even close - my anime spendings over 4 years could barely rival his epic 4 week Japan trip), I could identify with how excessive 2D merchandising could throttle The PassionTM.

Reflecting on the issue of unbridled anime consumerism, I can't help but ask myself and fellow collectors this question -

"Why do I collect 2D merchandise?"

Too often, I realised otaku-folk (myself included) get too caught up with The MomentTM and end up investing good, hard-earned money in "bad purchases" - buys that are incongruent with the basest reason why we collect something in the first place. Such purchases make us lose sight of our true passion and can induce 2D fatigue as the eventual lament sets in.

Anime Demotivators ~ My excuse to pimp pretty pictures

Posted by

I was trawling E-shuushuu as usual when I was hit with sudden guilt pangs for not sharing such fabulous 2D beauty with the rest of the aniblog world. However, instead of just splashing bishoujos all over my blog, the pretty pics are embedded in demotivators in a feeble attempt to add more meat to an otherwise 'lean' entry. The downside? I could only come up with 4 decent demotivators - a fraction of the art I would like to share. Ah well, picture spam saved for another entry.

Hope you enjoy the posters as much as I did conjuring them.

Anime Festival Asia ’08 Day Two

Posted by

Day Two purchase, again from Collateral Damage Studios, were a set of prints depicting Lutecia, Subaru, Teana, Erio and Caro, Vivio in child and adult forms which had run out by the time I got to their booth yesterday. Pity they didn't do a set for the Yagami family though.
