Sakura Wars TV Series 1 (Reviewed 2003-02-10, Updated 2003-11-23)
Based on the console game, the TV series draws on the very first version (have lost count of the number of subsequent versions). This is set in an alternative 1920s setting where the Taisho era didn't all go horribly wrong and Imperial Japan is quite nice and not militaristic or fascist at all. Oh, there was this Great Demonic War just five years ago too and it's Steampunk.
You're Under Arrest Full Throttle 9-11

In her anxiety to find a husband, Yuriko has a crisis of confidence in her career choice after a disastrous traffic safety session with some school kids. On top of that, she gets ripped off by a fortune teller who exploits her naivety.
But she saves one of the kids from some Very Kind People through bluster and her extensive knowledge of offences, regaining her confidence in her career choice. 'I became a policewoman to help others!' Oh, and to chase cute teachers while she's at it.
You're Under Arrest! Full Throttle 6-8

Finally managed to pick up this series again. If only to free up some HDD space. Thankfully these three episodes have been plain light entertainment. In Ep 6, an old acquaintance from Aoi's past returns and quickly proceeds to try and get Aoi to recover his manliness. Of course, it all ends well with Aoi staying just the way he should. OOOH~~!
You're Under Arrest Full Throttle 5
After the fluff of the previous episode, I was quite surprised at the attempt at social commentary in this episode. It recalls the death of a baby, of heat stroke, after being left in the car while the parents played pachinko.
The portrayal of the mom was initially hugely unsympathetic, even if she was a victim of having her baby kidnapped. She's shown to be priotising her mobile phone conversation (and not locking her car) and shopping over her child's welfare. Her dress sense, especially the miniskirt, is probably supposed to suggest again that she prioritises her own appearance - again, at the expense of her child's welfare. From Tokuno's interview-interrogation, it seems that her shopping was for fashion bargains rather than household necessities. Her behaviour is so outrageous that the (supposedly) mildest person of the regular cast, Miyuki, who gives her a tight slap of great justice.

Before Mizuho Miyanokoji, Jun Watarase and Impz, there was... Aoi Futaba. Whom I shall refer to as 'her' since I am still in denial after all these years.
You're Under Arrest Full Throttle 3

No complaints at all. Except that it would have been so lovely to have a Kanon reference in this episode. Certainly my appetite for that species of pastry fish, Tsukimiyaayu Hinanoris, has been revived. It's time to go on patrol again!

I pass the test. I will diminish, and go into Bokuto, and remain a Miyuki x Natsumi fan. *returns salute*
You're Under Arrest OVA File 4

YUA is one of those classic series that comes from the earlier era of my anime watching history. I remember how catching the opening strains of Julia Mazda's Starting Up was the highlight of my Saturday mornings while the series was airing on Sg terrestial TV. Somehow the Chinese dubs on Channel 8 were perfectly acceptable but the English dubs on the AnimEigo DVDs were so atrocious that I ripped my earphones off in a panic while frantically trying to switch the audio track.
I've been itching to write about Miyuki x Natsumi for a while. There's absolutely nothing in the canon that points to a romantic or sexual relationship between the two - the remarks next to them in "The List" maintained by Yuricon reads "right, we know they aren't, but c'mon....!" In fact, the unspoken attraction between Miyuki and Ken Nakajima is a source of much humour throughout the two seasons as is Natsumi's prerference for older men - thus her crush on the station chief and then ending up going out with an eternally absent younger colleague (edit: Toukairin - thanks, tj_han86!). But they do seem to give off the aura of a very seasoned couple which this episode really showcases.
