[Zyl] Shizuka Itou at STGCC 2011

As per normal, no photo-taking/video recording were allowed the moment she came on stage
It's been more than a month since I went to STGCC for the express purpose of seeing/hearing Shizuka Itou live and now I finally have some time to do a quick write up of the experience. First, I owe many thanks to SaiNano for getting me into the VIP area; we were literally just within single digit metres of the main stage.
Going for live events can be risky for one's fandom. When you normally experience the product of a performer, it's usually been gone over, prior to consumer release, by production staff with all their technical wizardry to make a product that could be quite different from what a live performance or appearance can deliver. I'm glad to say that I've come away from this encounter as an even bigger fan of Shizu-sama.
The first surprise was how pretty she was in real life. Her publicity shot for this event and even the cover photo of her mini-album, Devotion, seems to over-emphasize the oblong longness of her face. Maybe it was her bright smile. Or maybe it was her blue yukata with yellow flower prints. Or maybe her solid voice performances. In any case she came across, right from the moment she walked on stage, as a performer with quite a lot of charisma and stage presence.
[Stripey] 10 anime bishoujos I don’t want to meet in RL (U15 edition)
"Ahhh, I'm SOOO glad I didn't meet her in real life!" has been one of those dominating mental outbursts of late while watching anime. It began with my reliving the great Starlight breaker scene in Nanoha movie lst, culminating to the hair-raising Beast-mode battle in Evangelion 2.22. (Those outbursts were for Fate and Rei respectively in case you're wondering). Maybe 2D bishoujos in full HD glory lets one in on TOO much geometric details. (Curves, figures etc). Especially hazardous for honourable tanukis are those under 15 beauties which anime is SO great at crafting.
Anyhow, it's with thanksgiving that I present 10 anime bishoujos I haven't met and pray will NEVER meet in real life.

[Zyl] London MCM Expo 2011

Bank Holiday Weekend Warrior
I don't play computer or console games; I haven't read comics since Lucifer ended its run in 2007; I don't watch Hollywood movies unless I'm taking a long haul flight (and I've already seen all the anime and Chinese movies in the inflight entertainment system). So, given the impression of the general lack of anime-related attractions on the London MCM Expo 2011 website's featured events, I wasn't so sure if it would have been worth my while to attend.
However the chatter on Twitter indicated that some of the UK-based anibloggers that I follow were looking forward to this; Hanners, 5scamp and Hana were all travelling to London from other parts of the UK to attend the Expo. Since I'm already in London and getting to the venue was a matter of negotiating the London Underground and Docklands Light Rail (note to self: don't take the DLR to ExCeL from Bank - it was much easier for me to get on the DLR at Canning Town), my initial reluctance turned into: "Why not?"
This was my first time attending a UK convention so I was also curious how this would compare to my experiences in the US (Otakon 2000), Japan (Yuricon 2005, C72, C77) and Singapore (AFA08, AFA09). First off, while I did not encounter any long queue times, I was initially surprised by how admissions were controlled by having a numbered wristband (top-right of the photo) attached to you. The stewards in the ticketing queue stressed repeatedly that if it was removed or damaged in any way, we would have to pay the full admissions price again. Showering a tad awkward as getting it wet was not recommended and the stickiness of perspiration between the wristband and skin made for occasional discomfort. Comiket did not charge attendees so there was no such issue. IIRC all the other conventions I attended before issued passes (hung around one's neck). The Expo's organizers probably wanted to prevent transfers though I'm not sure how much revenue loss this measure actually prevented. I witnessed an instance of distress from an attendee who arrived in cosplay with long gloves but a compromise was eventually arrived at with the wristband being attached loosely enough for her to be able to remove her glove but not the wristband. It was an incident like that (and, as a wit remarked in a Tweet, an excuse for some not to shower) that I hope the organizers will consider switching to a pass system in the future.
[Zyl] Legendary Galactic Heroes Say the Darnest Things
Many thanks to ExecutiveOtaku for giving me that final push to pick up the superlative Legend of the Galactic Heroes. I had long been daunted by the 110 episode length (as well as the somewhat pompous title) but the well-paced storytelling and compelling characters built up an unassailable momentum that carried me through the entire series in just under two weeks but this post has taken somewhat longer to write. (Being able to get the surprise reference in Maria+Holic Alive was pretty sweet too.)
LoGH is notable for grand, macro-level discussions of war and peace, politics and history by its characters, particularly Yang Wenli in historian mode. This post looks at some rather less grand narratives - spontaneous outbursts of anger and surprise, cheeky lashings of sarcasm, witty banter between friends and loved ones. Many a word, lightly spoken, often spoke volumes about the bigger picture, drawing an immediate connection between the personal and the galactic.

Old Man Bucock tells Andrew to go Fork himself
With supplies lines overstretched, Admiral Alexander Bucock tries to get permission from Fleet Admiral Lazar Lobos to start pulling back in anticipation of the impending Imperial counter-attack. But when gatekeeper and Chief of Staff Commodore Andrew Fork dismisses his request, Bucock sarcastically asks Fork to exchange places with him.
[Stripey] Why Kasugano Sora isn’t my top imouto

Almost top imouto
Four months since the end of Yosuga no Sora and I still cannot get over it. Kasugano Sora SHOULD HAVE been my favourite imouto of ALL time. Just look at her. Light-haired, twin-tailed, deliciously lolicious with a supremely enlightened fashion sense - Sora chan IS the goddess every tanuki yearns for.
At least that why we thought when we started construction of her shrine with the debut of Yosuga no Sora winter 2010. But alas, her meteoric rise to immortality was shattered by the studio's regrettable application of the omnibus format.
Now don't get me wrong, I still managed to enjoy the final arc of YnS. (In fact, I actually preordered the BD but had to cancel it due to unfortunate circumstances). The final arc was excellent especially in the treatment of Haruka's struggles and his resolve for siscon. But it was also clear that with only 5 episodes, there just wasn't enough airtime to co-develop Sora; short-changing her of the maturity that eventually robbed her of goddess-hood.
Let's face it. Final arc Sora remained a bratty, manipulative girl who emotionally blackmailed Haruka til the very end. It's sad really. In the other arcs, we do catch glimpses of a more grown-up Sora who was learning to let go of Haruka to pursue his own happiness (at the expense of her own). Surely, that has to be one of the greatest authenticators of a self-sacrificial love. Unfortunately, the omnibus format squandered precious minutes on the rather thin Nao and Kazuha plots instead of rich/promising Sora developments.
It would be necessary at this point to emphasize that Nao and Kazuha arcs do contain vital elements that are key to the overall narrative that is Yosuga no Sora. It's just that they don't deserve 2 stand-alone arcs. Yosuga no Sora is essentially 2 stories - The Akira/Kazuha story and the Nao/Sora rivalry. And these 2 seemingly separate tales can be woven into a continuous tale that would then allow much coherent development on Sora which may have elevated her onto the tanuki altar.
[Zyl] Cecilia Alcott’s London Pride
Got the idea for this via @cowboybibimbop. I didn't like Cecilia at first but as things have developed her dere has been really powerful and I was za-kyun-ed by her pouting in Ep 10.
