The Da Capo franchise ~ Through the lens of the secondary DVD market
Having given up hope of ever seeing a US R1 or Taiwan R3 license for Da Capo II Second season, I sought to acquire the DCIISS dvds in my recent Tokyo trip only to discover how the tanuki's take on the Da Capo franchise mirrored local sentiments.
My hunt for anime DVDs in Akihabara typically begins with the 2nd hand mega-chain store - Traders. Their numerous outlets in the 2D mecca and wide anime DVD selection give me hope (sometimes false hope) that locating any DVD set would be a breeze. I couldn't be more wrong. The Trader stores I hit came up empty. I expanded my search to Liberty, K-Books, Mandarake, Books-off and by day 2 in Akiba, after more than 10 2nd hand DVD stores, I was starting to see a pattern.
1. It would be easier to spot Zyl in a Hinagiku cosplay than a DCIISS DVD.
2. The DC shelves are stuffed full with DCII and DCSS DVDs.
To be fair, there were some representation of the original Da Capo (Season 1) DVDs but their numbers are severely dwarfed by her DCII and DCSS successors. And as if that wasn't humiliating enough, the going price for a single DCII DVD was as low as 980 yen and the entire set for DCSS less than 6000 yen - a mere fraction of the original cost. Indeed the Japanese fans have proclaimed loud and clear their lament of DCII and DCSS through the secondary DVD market.
Candy Boy begins

You know you love it
Completely missed this at the time of airing but was recently reminded of it by my SS!AB colleague Halfadeckshort's intro post.
from the ancient times IMO

Mix of Tootsie and Great Teacher Onizuka i suppose. Guy can't get a job at a girls' school as the principal is anti-male. With the help of a rich, eccentric, techie 'grandma', he's transformed into a beautiful lady teacher for the purpose of showing up the principal. Said guy turns out to a star teacher, a hit with his/her students, ruffles the feathers of the stuffy school administration and strives to keep his real gender a secret.
Akane-iro ni somaru saka – "Nii-san" does not a good siscon maketh
Siscon appears to be getting some flak lately no thanks to AkaSaka. Intrigued by this and the remote possibility of a Minato end, I resumed AkaSaka (dropped previously at ep 3) to finish with 2 conclusions.
1) I was right to have dropped the series early.
2) AkaSaka gives siscon a bad name.
First some clarifications. It's imperative to recognise that siscon is a plot device and hence its quality largely depends on it execution. In other words, there are good and bad siscon of which sadly AkaSaka bears the latter. So what is 'bad siscon'? As an ingredient used mainly in romances, it pretty much follows the criteria that makes a 'good' romance. Here's why AkaSaka fails on both accounts.
Code Geass R2 Ep 22 – The Shoop Shoop Song

How can I tell if he loves me so
(Is it in his eyes)
No, you'll be deceived
True Tears 04 – What women want
I don't get Hiromi. From her verbose justifications, it's clear that she's trying too hard to convince Shin (maybe even herself?) of her supposed crush on Jun. Yet, despite the distance she desires, it's evident that she also wishes to be chummy with Shin (photo moments and greetings). An expression of her amicable personality? Her hopes to be part of the Nakagami household? Or the result of a conflicting shoujo heart? I guess we'd only know after the workings of her relations with Mrs Nakagami crystallises.
Noe. For someone who's so lucid about the emotions/pretenses of others, does she realise her growing feelings for Shin? How about onii-chan's feelings for her? Does earmarking Shin to be the one worthy source of her tears means she would not only be investing chicken feed but her very own emotions in the Raigomaru-replacement? And just where can get those cute boots-warmers?
What about Ai? Is she making the same mistake as Takayuki (Kiminozo) and Yoshiyuki (DCII)? What was she thinking when she reciprocated the sneaky Nobuse hand-holding?! Did she understand its implications or does she naively believe Nobuse would see it as a simple gesture of friendship valid only for road-crossing? Compassion or sympathy in love has be the cruelest type of kindness. Hoping Ai extricates herself before it's too late.
I guess that is why True tears remain fascinating. There are so many conflicting facets of the bishoujos that keep me guessing about their true motivations. That said, the one person I did get was Jun. I absolutely understand his more-than-brotherly affections for Noe (who with testosterone wouldn't?) and his call to matchmake Noe and Shin. I never NEVER want to be in his shoes.
Can't wait to see how big a theme siscon would be in True tears.

Nusunde Lilith – Siscon to the max!

Have you ever had the distinctive feeling that a book/show was made just. for. you? I certainly felt like that when I learnt about Tinker's manga ~ Nusunde Lilith. Those following my descent into 2D art would know that Tinker is my favourite artist with her out-of-print Tsukiyo no Chakai being my Holy Grail of 2D artbooks. She combines two potent elements that simply melt tanuki hearts - elaborate gothloli fashion and imouto-moelicious characters designs. Now imagine this lofty art form woven into a Da Capo tale and we have Nusunde Lilith.
